Midlands golf membership

I’m looking at joining a proper golf club for the first time and would really appreciate some recommendations from people around the Tamworth/Birmingham area. I’m currently a 28 handicap (on 18Birdies) and have been playing for around 7/8 months. I’m looking for somewhere that I can join, improve my game, get an official handicap, meet other golfers and hopefully get involved in competitions/social golf.

I’ve looked at my local club Drayton Park but there’s currently a waiting list and abit expensive for myself. I’ve also seen wishaw golf club too but don’t know too much about it (not much info online). I’m also aware there are loads of clubs around Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield, Tamworth, Birmingham and the surrounding area that I may be overlooking.

Cheers guys!

Question regarding stableford

Hey all, I am on a golf trip in the UK and I've encountered something I've not seen before.

Today I played 18 holes at West Hove Golf Club in Brighton. With my group we are doing a stableford tournament for the entire trip, and we have multiple low-handicap members (47 hcp). One of whom specifically played from the red tees today, see image.

The red tees are a good distance shorter than the yellow tees, however they seem to get a much more favourable stableford score. To me this doesn't really make sense, since the holes are shorter and easier.

Am I missing something, or is this an outdated relic of the men's/women's tee system?

I've just discovered how people find and sell used balls

I played my round today and for some reason had the nastiest push slice from start to finish with my driver. I'm talking about landing past the cut, past the rough, past the rougher rough, and into the overgrowth.

I lost 7 balls, and managed to find and punch out the rest. But in the course of doing so, I found 34 balls just today in those no go zones alone without much digging around - and there were far FAR more I could have taken. They were all within 10 feet of each other as well, just heaps of mis hit balls.

So if you're ever on the hunt for used balls, just look where the slicers/pushes would land their drives

Rain Suits

Thinking about the winter ahead, I am considering a rain suit. I hear the likes of Galvin Green are good, but does anyone have any recommendations? e.g. are Druids decent? of course, they are alot cheaper.

Up to now, I have gotten by just fine with a hiking rain jacket and basic water proof trousers (maybe £30 all in haha).

I am going on a three day golf trip to ireland in october, so i will probably need to be better prepared for all eventualities and have a few outfits for the unpredictable weather.

Would you miss smoking on the course?

Local courses have been banning smoking over the last few weeks due to fire risk. Totally understandable.

But let's not shy away from the fact - at least where I play - some people feel like it's acceptable to leave fag butts on the floor, especially around tee boxes. Yuk.

Is this a problem just at my local course - a member's club but open to the public - or is this endemic across golfers?

I'd be happy for them to revert to a "vape only" rules if it did away with this litter. (As you might have guessed I don't smoke so only seeing one side of this!)

Members in/near Oxfordshire that would want to host 3 guests for a round (or two) on the 25 of August

Hello!

Me and 2 buddies (8, 10 and 12 HCI) booked the 25th of August off to play a day of golf (2 rounds ideally) but all the plans we’ve come up with have fallen through.

Ideally we were thinking Frilford as it’s £55 for the day as a guest.

We’re open to other courses though; if we could get two rounds that would be amazing.

We’ll treat you to a drink and something to eat, and maybe a mulligan. Less sure on the mulligan.

I’d be happy to reciprocate the favour with a guest round at Goring and Streatley if anyone can accommodate us :)

Or even if you have courses you’d recommend instead!

I just really want to play some golf. :)

Am I the only one who has struggled for the last 2 months!?

As it says above. Since the hot weather drying all moisture out of my course I've really struggled to adapt to the conditions and put a decent round together.

For context, I've always been able to play, 4/5 times a year but have taken the plunge this year and been playing twice a week since March.

Managed to get down to 11.8 but now up to 13.7 and will likely keep going to. Simply cannot break 90 and even a few rounds barely breaking 100.

My best rounds were May and June scoring a few mid-80s when there was more responsiveness in the greens and able to get under the ball on the fairway.

Others around me don't seem to have struggled as much and have stayed fairly static in handicap terms.

Is it just me?

Ladies Academy Membership (London)

Hello,

My wife is keen to pick up golf, is anyone aware of a club that has an academy membership option?

Ideally group lessons with a younger clientele in SW London.

Thank you.

Courses Near Stations (London/Around London)

Live in SW London. Getting a bit bored of playing the same few courses however I unfortunately do not have a car. Does anyone know of any good courses in London or within an hour/hour and a half travel outside of London and close to a train station? Preferably ones that won’t break the bank either.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Cheers!

Does anyone else think memberships are overrated? Trying new courses is too much fun.

Getting a membership around London is tricky and I've found the variety way more fun.

Plenty more on the list to tick off - and planning a golf trip to Northumberland. Any recs welcome!

Golf hotel and spa - South West England/South Wales

I’m aware this gets asked fairly frequently but does anyone have any recommendations for golf hotels/resorts in South West England or South Wales?

I have just come home from a night and a round at Bowood. My wife used the spa and relaxed in the hotel while I played, which worked out really well, so we are keen to do some more breaks like that. We don’t have kids and are pretty flexible with work so Sunday and Monday bookings work well for us.

I’ve got Celtic Manor, Vale of Glamorgan, Bovey Castle on my list so would be happy to hear from people who’ve had any breaks at those places, as well as any other recommendations. I’m sure people will also say The Belfry but we do like a bit of peace and quiet so wonder if that might be a bit staggy/laddy for us.

We’re just to the east of Bath near Trowbridge and are happy to drive 2 or 3 hours. I’m about a 15 handicap and really enjoy playing solo, but always happy to be paired up with people

Many thanks in advance!

Best budget courses around Leeds?

Hi all,

I posted on here a couple of months ago asking for recommendations for Edinburgh and you guys didn't disappoint.

A few people recommended Gullane 2 on the 2-for-1 offer and that turned out to be incredible value! By far the nicest course I've played.

Now looking for courses around Leeds/West Yorkshire. Ideally max green fees of £50, but the cheaper the better. We're just a bunch of 18 handicappers. And we'll be playing on a Tues/Weds afternoon.

Thanks

Kirkland Irons

Local Costco have the stiff ones in for £230 currently - that's a ridiculously good deal for 7 clubs isn't it?

I'm kinda hovering around that 18-20 handicap currently and do want some new irons, these seems almost too good to turn down?

Was thinking use them for a couple of years before getting a proper fitting, also Costco have an excellent returns policy apparently.

I've had the Kirkland wedges for about 6 months too and love them so happy with the general feel of them.

Edit - bought them and loads left in stock at Costo Gateshead if anyone else is keen.

Surrey’s Hardest Golf Course

No, not Wentworth - let me introduce Bletchingley to the uninitiated.

A bit of context. I am off 7, and my last 3 rounds have been 78, 75 and 80. So I’m not a vanity handicap.

I have played there twice this summer. I have lost 6 full sleeves of balls, and my combined score over par is +63.

I play strict rules of golf. If it’s OB, it’s reload. No favourable dropping, mulligans etc.

This place is absolutely insane. Completely unplayable. There is no respite from impossible holes anywhere. A few holes are *literally* impossible. There is nobody out there - everyone else has too much common sense.

A few highlights from my experiences:

- a nice, welcoming first hole with out of bounds both sides and the white tees at 438 yards. Hit my second shot to a back pin, landed 6 feet away and it repelled off the green violently 80 yards down a hill into some bushes.
- the 3rd hole is a 485 yard par 4 where you are hitting diagonally across a fairway. If you don’t fade it, it will hit the ground and run OB. Took 3 goes to get this in play.
- the 5th hole. Oh my god. 445 hard par 4 and it turns sharp left. You have to hit a ball *exactly* 210 to run to the perfect spot between two trees to hit a 230 yard approach to a green that slopes more than Augusta National. I hit a 5 iron right down the middle - the fairway repelled it left and it went in the brook. What???? Did I mention it’s OB a yard right off the fairway off the tee?
- the 7th hole is a 239 yard par 3, 100ft above the hole with a green opening of about 4 yards. I don’t think anyone has ever hit that in regulation.
- the 11th hole is a par 5 where you can only hit the fairway if you hit a 45 yard fade, but if you hit a 50 yard fade it’s OB. Otherwise you have to hit a PW 125 off the tee to the start of the fairway.
- the 15th hole has a fairway that *cannot* be hit. It slopes down to the left where it is OB 2 yards off the fairway. Any ball that lands in the fairway is repelled left OB every single time. You have to hit the ball in the bunker to be in play. It took me 4 goes.
- the 16th is a 480 yard par 4 where there is a 15 yard gap between trees to hit the fairway. If you miss it, it is OB both sides one yard off the fairway.

Beyond this, on both occasions I played there were 4 illegal pins at least. On two occasions, it looked like the group in front hadn’t replaced the flag properly, but it turned out that it was on such a steep slope the flag was leaning in the hole.

Completely and utterly mad. I rarely refuse to hand in a card, but I drew the line here.

Smoking on the course?

Given the dry weather whose course has banned smoking? My club are resisting which seems ludicrous to me given there are lots of discarded cigarettes butts on the tees

Golf glove recommendations?

Anyone in the UK used Clinch golf gloves?

Or recommend any other all weather durable gloves, don’t want to be buying every month. Using Kirklands at the moment and they feel horrendous.

Also don’t want to be spending more than £20 a glove tbh

F.I.G. golf is incredibly fun!

Had the worst Front 9 I've had all year this morning. I was ready to walk off the course.

Instead, I decided to give F.I.G. golf on the back 9.

For those might not be aware, F.I.G. is a practice round style where you play 3 tee shots, you take the best ball, and play 3 shots from that position, repeat until finished.

The biggest thing for me, was how much pressure it took off each shot, and allowed me to just enjoy playing. If the 1st shot is great, the 2nd and 3rd are relaxed because you already know youve got something in play. The 1st shot is relaxed because you know you've got the 2nd and 3rd shot to back you up. It's a really freeing way of playing 9 holes!

It gave me such a confidence boost after a really poor start, and it might be my new favourite way to practice as it shows what you am capable of doing, even if its not a true reflection of your ability.

If you've never tried it, I urge you to give it a go!
