What makes you MOST excited for Katmai?

We don't have a ton of info right now, but considering what we do have, what makes you most excited?

I think my #1 thing is no coyotes. I hate coyotes so much. I have rage quit WolfQuest twice because of coyotes, and I never rage quit games. The Devs could honestly make a map with barely any content but if it had no coyotes I'd buy it immediately and it would be my favourite map. I honestly don't care about the brown bears who will be very abundant and potentially stronger than Yellowstone grizzlies, I can deal with that and I'll take them over coyotes any day.

My #2 is having new prey that will probably be very different to ungulates in terms of how you hunt them. I literally had a dream about how seal hunting might be last night and I'm really excited. I'm not sure what otter hunting will look like, and I'm not sure if there will be other animals like Stellar Sea lions, but even just one animal with different hunting mechanics is going to be awesome. The format of find prey > make them run > run them down for a few minutes until they are tired > bite until dead gets kinda boring after a while. I've been learning how to hunt bison which is pretty different to the usual format of ungulate hunting, but it still has similarities to hunting elk. Seal hunting looks most similar to maybe beaver hunting? From the video it looked like the seals will be like a mix between cougars and beavers, with the extra feature of being able to pull them backwards. I'm excited to see how hunting otters and salmon will look too!

My #3 is being able to have a new environment. I'm assuming a lot of the foliage is going to look different, and we might get new rocks? I'm excited for a change of scenery! And being able to maybe visit that glacier in the top right corner of the map could be really cool.

#4 kind of ties in with #3, but I'm interested to see what new things there are to find. New landmarks, new collectibles, having new things to find is going to be very exciting for me!

My #5 is new music!! I love the WolfQuest music so much, and having new sound tracks is going to be amazing! I'm super excited for that.

#6 is the idea of getting new quests. I think Learn to Hunt will be changed to hunt seals, since there will be no elk. Hunt Newborn Ungulates might be replaced with a salmon spawning quest in late summer. I don't see a point in keeping the newborns quest if the only ungulates on the map will be moose and we won't really be hunting them. I think the subquest will probably be replaced with salmon spawning. Or maybe we'll get two new quests instead of the newborns quest, and we'll get one for hunting harbour seal babies (which I think are born around the same time as the newborns in Yellowstone?) and another one for hunting salmon in the late summer.

My #7 is probably that Douglas Bay area, I'd love to be able to claim it and pretend I have my own island. I'm praying there are dens there!

And then #8 is probably new achievements, though I'm praying that they aren't too difficult. I need 9 more achievements to 100% the game, I'm hoping I'll be able to finish those before Katmai releases. I hope Katmai's achievement difficulty will be similar to Tower Fall's.

AITJ for divorcing my wife because she couldn't have more kids?

I (5M) divorced my mate (8F) because she wasn't able to produce big litters anymore. I need a minimum of 6 pups per litter, not her puny old age litters. My brother (6M) says that I was too harsh by taking her to the Bison Divorce Agency, but I disagree. She was old anyway, right? I already found a new wife (2F) who is young and able to produce a lot more litters for my pack. Am I the jerk for divorcing my old wife and getting a younger one?

How do eye colour genetics work?

Does the game take parents and grandparents into consideration for eye colour, or do they include great grandparents?

I have a pack that I started with a wolf that I aged up. I'm asking because I'm not sure how in depth the genetics system goes for eyes. My wolf pair both have pretty dull orange eyes, but a lot of the pups have striking yellow eyes.

The great grandmother of the pups (Tempest) has bright yellow eyes, and the great grandfather (Jasper) has dull yellow eyes.

The grandmother (Gale) of the pups (descendant of the great grandparents) has dull orange eyes. Her mate (Moon) has brown eyes.

The father (Cepheus) of the pups (descendant of the grandparents) has dull orange/brown eyes, and his mate (Sitka) has dull orange eyes.

Now 5 out of 8 of their pups have bright yellow eyes, even leaning to the green tint the way that the great grandmother Tempest had.

Now I'm not sure if the game goes in depth with eye colour genetics, and that the 5 pup's eye colour came from their great grandmother, or if it just came from Sitka's parents. Unfortunately I killed her entire family and don't have any screenshots of them, so I have no idea what her parents eye colour is.

So my question is:

Did the bright yellow eyes of the pups most likely come from their great grandmother on Cepheus's side, or did they come from their grandparents on Sitka's side?

Does the game even calculate eye genetics 3 generations back?

I swear multiplayer accelerated mode makes packmates hungrier faster, I'm struggling so bad.

My boyfriend and I are playing 2 player saga, and our current year is Accurate because we're trying to get the "Strength of the Wolf (Accurate)" achievement. In single player I feel very comfortable playing on Accurate, and I can play fairly well.

We're currently on Growing Pups, and we're taking longer because I'm trying to find skulls for the "Headhunters" achievement. But I swear everyone is starving so quickly. I never have issues with packmates starving so much in single player. The pups seem the same but I am struggling to feed all of my packmates and my pups. There's always at least 4 adults wolves below 15% hunger at all times.

On top of this, we got a poor prey abundance year. I don't have many problems finding elk, it's just that it barely feeds anyone. We hunted an entire grown cow elk, and the pack demolished it almost instantly and were still hungry. So we hunted another one, and they ate THE ENTIRE THING as well, and a lot of them had only gotten to like 50%-60% food 😭.

I'm getting carcass spawns which are honestly carrying us, because I'm also so low on health that hunting is dangerous, and I can't quick heal because we don't have enough food to go around. We don't even have an insane amount of wolves, it's 9 adult packmates, plus myself and my boyfriend, and then our 4 pups.

Even the previous years that weren't poor, we had starving wolves. Is this an accelerated mode thing, or just purely the prey abundance 😭

LEAST favourite quest?

I was curious what everyone's least favourite quests are. My least favourite quest is Raise Pups, because I find it boring. It's the time in the game when I become the least motivated to continue playing, and I've abandoned so many saves after my wolves had pups lol. I prefer not playing with pups at all, and living child free. I do find Loaf at Rendezvous Site more interesting because the pups start developing their adult coats during this quest, and it's when I start having interest in the pups. I think the years of playing presaga WolfQuest where Raise Pups took SOOO long and the pups were annoying just made me dislike it disproportionately more than the other quests 😭

I think I figured out why WQ3's skies (specifically during sunrises and sunsets) look so weird.

WolfQuest 3 sunset image from the WolfQuest wiki: https://wolfquest.fandom.com/wiki/Time?file=WQ-AE\_Time\_Hour-sunset\_AM.png

WolfQuest Classic image from the WolfQuest wiki: https://wolfquest.fandom.com/wiki/Time?file=Time\_dawn\_spring\_SC\_%282.7%29.png

I've always hated the sunsets in WolfQuest, they have this big ugly band of green between the orange and the blue. It looks unrealistic and it's not very visually appealing.

I think I've figured out why:

The main problem is that real life sunsets don't have the big band of green, because most of the time the blue is blended with the orange through pink and purple, not green. If you look at the colour wheel, you can see that you can get from orange to blue going through red, pink, and purple. This is how most real life sunsets blend, and it's why you'll see hues of pink and purple in sunsets, and it makes them look pretty.

WolfQuest sunsets, on the other hand, blend from orange to blue going through yellow and green. We get a big green band in the sky because WolfQuest's skies blend on the opposite side of the colour wheel to real life. It makes the skies look unrealistic, and kind of unappealing.

They actually got this right in the sky box of Classic and Legacy, as you can see in the last image. The sunrise blends orange to blue going through pink and purple, and it looked very beautiful.

PLEASE devs, I just need this one thing fixed and my soul will rest at peace 😭

Moving maps during Growing Pups! I didn't know you could do this.

I always thought you could only travel between maps during Young Hunters. Apparently we can also do it during GP!

Why do people hate boundaries so much???

My boyfriend and I have very strict boundaries about female and male friends (he has no female friends, I have no male friends). This is something we discussed very early on in our relationship, and it's something we agreed on.

For some reason, people keep telling us that it's bad. They'll say we're controlling each other, don't truly love or trust each other, even that I "don't view other women as people"?

It's not controlling, it's boundaries that we set early on. I'm not saying everyone needs to have these boundaries, it's what my boyfriend and I have in OUR relationship. It doesn't impact our love for each other at all. I trust him, I don't trust other women. Same goes for him. I'm not saying opposite gender friendships don't work, just in my experience it's extremely rare. I trust him, I don't trust others.

And how does my relationship affect other people? You not liking my boundaries is irrelevant because I'm not dating you? Like fuck off, I'm not saying you have to want my boundaries in your relationship, don't try and negotiate me into changing when you don't know me or my partner.

I've seen people here who don't want their partner having adult toys. My boyfriend and I don't have this boundary in our relationship, but I'm not gonna go around telling people to change and actually let their partners have toys like that? It's not my relationship, it's not my business. If that's an agreement that works for someone else, I'm not going to go out of my way to explain to them why they actually hate their partner and don't trust them or some bullshit.

Don't tell me how what boundaries I should or shouldn't have in my relationship, fuck off.

I wish Therianthropy and Alterhumanity in general wasn't as mainstream as it is now.

I've been in the community for about 7 years now. A few years back I remember there would be very limited mentions of therians in non-therian spaces, and the mentions I did see were "therian cringe compilations" on YouTube. There was obviously hate, but Therianthropy seemed niche enough that most people didn't even know what it was.

Now it seems that I see therian mentions in non-therian spaces regularly. Every other day it feels like I'm seeing therians being mentioned negatively in popular subreddits. I think it's the same on TikTok, but I rarely use TikTok.

It feels like Therianthropy is a lot more known about now, and it leads to a lot more people hating on it/spreading misinformation to the general public. I wish it wasn't as mainstream.

It's bad with fictionkins too, with that stupid "how I remember myself as a Jax fictionkin", and now fictionkins are more mainstream as well, and seem to be hated more than therians in some ways.

I wish our community was more underground and niche.

Progression as an anxious rider.

I'm a very anxious rider, and I struggle to progress because of it. I'm interested in jumping, but I can't jump that well. I've been jumping for about maybe 3-4 years? But I still jump pretty low. I think the highest I've recently jumped (a few weeks ago) was maybe 40-50cm? Most of the time I'm still jumping really small.

My flatwork is pretty solid, for the most part. I can do sitting trot, I can trot and canter without stirrups. I've only ever galloped once though. I've had horses trip fairly badly and I stayed on easily. I don't think I'd be able to sit a buck though. I only had a horse buck with me one time and it was maybe 6 years ago, and I was off immediately. I don't think I'd be able to sit a buck. Other than that I do think my flatwork is okay. I know how to steer the horse with my legs and seat.

The issue is mainly my jumping. Some days I feel so great because I managed to do more than usual, like asking for the jump to be put up higher, or trying some sort of combination. But other days I'm pretty bad. I'd say most days are very mediocre, and I don't manage to do a lot. I always push myself, but the degree that I'm able to push myself varies so much. Some days just jumping AT ALL is pushing myself.

I'm really afraid of falling, but my fear is more that I'm going to lose so much confidence when I do fall again. At this point I'm more afraid of the confidence loss than I am the actual fall itself. I'm also anticipating falling soon because I haven't fallen for about 4 years. It's been a long time, and it feels like I'm "due" for a fall.

I also started riding a different horse because the horse I was riding is lame now, so I have switched to a different horse. This is probably also going to be something that drags back my progress, because I'm still not even fully comfortable cantering on her.

There always seems to be something that makes me drag myself back. I know I shouldn't compare myself to others, but I see other riders progressing way faster than me, and putting the jumps up really high. I see them fall, and they just get back on and keep going like normal. I take months to recover from a fall, even if it's not that bad.

The progress I do make is so tiny as well. It'll be like me trying a jump one more time even when I'm having a very anxious day. Sometimes even pushing myself to jump at all feels like I made "progress" but it doesn't feel like it's enough.

I love riding, but it's so frustrating not progressing. I don't really find dressage interesting, but I'm contemplating just going for dressage and giving up jumping even though I enjoy it just because of how bad I am at it.

I feel like progressing in jumping isn't even something that I can do anymore.

Is this a bug or a new feature?

Yearlings are marked as subordinates. They used to be marked as "Yearlings" in the role, but I loaded an old, pre saga save and they're marked as Subordinates instead. I can't find any patch notes changing this, is it a bug?

Katmai Coast speculation and discussion!

I was soooo excited when I saw the devlog pop up, it doesn't even feel real because I was not expecting something so big! I know people were asking for a coastal wolf expansion, but I didn't think they'd do it, and if they did, I didn't think they'd do it to this extent!

I think most of us are really hyped (except for that one Debbie downer lol), because this seems like it will have entirely new gameplay. Every DLC map has had at least one new animal (Tower Fall has lynxes, Hellroaring Mountain has wolverines, Lost River has dogs, cattle and cats). The lynx functioned very similarly to the cougar in terms of gameplay, only it was weaker and more skittish. The dogs functioned like weaker rival wolves, the cattle were just large, tanky ungulates (with the added risk of the rancher), and the wolverines felt almost like bears in a way. They would deal a lot of damage and shake you off immediately like a bear, but if you bit them from the front then you wouldn't take damage.

Now the animals on Katmai Coast that we know are going to be in the game with gameplay are otters, seals, salmon and brown bears. I'm guessing the brown bears will function exactly the same as grizzlies from Yellowstone, but they will probably be stronger (since they're bigger) and there will be more of them.

It looks like we might have to use strategy killing seals, because in the devlog, we were shown the wolf grabbing the seal from behind and dragging it, and it bit the wolf on the neck. I'm thinking that maybe the seals would be able to get back to the water, so dragging them would probably get them away from the water. I'm guessing they'll be similar to beavers in the way that if they get to the water, they're safe from you. Dragging them away from the water would keep them from getting to safety. Dragging them will probably also deal damage (judging by the wolf's yelp in the devlog when it was dragging the seal). You'd probably have to avoid the front of the seal where it can bite you. The real wolf in the video was attacking the seal from behind and avoiding it's head, so I'm guessing the gameplay will reflect that. I think seal gameplay would be pretty different to any gameplay we've had before.

I have no clue what otter gameplay is going to be like, I could see it being similar to beaver gameplay.

Salmon look pretty interesting, in the devlog, the wolf jumped forward and caught a salmon. Maybe you'd have to time your pounce and bite it at the right time.

How do you think they're going to handle gameplay on the new animals?

Something I've also noticed about DLC maps is that there's always some kind of human interference. In Lost River it was the ranch (obviously there's human stuff all over, I'm just talking about gameplay wise), in Hellroaring Mountain there were the hunters, and in Tower Fall there was the road. I think Tower Fall's human interference actually interfered with gameplay the least, but I'd still count it as a human interference. I have no clue how the team is going to handle an expansion, and I'm not sure if they'll add a human interference the same way they would with a DLC map. I'm also not sure what kind of human interference they could even add, because I don't know anything about this park.

I'm also not sure what would make the Katmai Coast expansion different to the other map DLCs. Obviously there will be all new gameplay (and music?) but I'm not sure how traveling between maps would work. I Googled, and it does seem like wolves who are dispersing travel far distances and can go from Yellowstone to Alaska. Maybe they'll keep it so that only dispersals can travel to Katmai Coast, and existing packs will not. When Dave said that the wolves are adapted to live on the coast, I wonder if that implies that a Yellowstone wolf would not be able to play in the Katmai Coast map. Maybe you'd have to make a completely new wolf and start it in Katmai Coast, and then keep it there. But I can also see this being too restrictive, so maybe they'll use the rules they originally had for Lost River, so you'd be able to start a new game in Katmai Coast, but you won't be able to travel to any of the Yellowstone maps.

What other animals could be on the map? I Googled and apparently Canadian Lynxes and Wolverine's live in Katmai National Park. I don't think they'd put lynxes and Wolverine's on the map too, but maybe in wrong. It does also look like there are red foxes and snowshoe hares, so that would probably stay the same. There are also apparently coyotes, but they're less common than wolves and brown bears. Maybe there will be more bears, but less coyotes.

What do you think?? Also let's keep the discussion on Katmai Coast, and not the wolf models. I don't feel like doing this discourse again.

Wolfy WolfName Long! 😭

I encountered this bug, where it seems like everything on the Family Tree is a place holder, and I found it funny that the place holder for the wolf's name is Wolfy WolfName Long!

I am currently reporting it, but unfortunately it's taking forever to actually send the feedback through. I regenerated the family snapshot and it fixed itself.
