What I wish Someone had Told me when I Started Learning Astrology

A lot of people ask how they should start learning Vedic Astrology, and honestly I think most beginners make the same mistake.

They start mixing everything together from day one just because they feel excited about it in the beginning.

Parashari, Jaimini, Bhrigu, KP..whatever they can get their hands on.

I wouldn't recommend that.

Before even talking about techniques and books, first figure out whether this subject is actually for you.

Astrology looks very exciting from the outside. Predictions, famous astrologers, yogas, combinations, all that stuff. But studying it is a completely different thing. It requires patience. A lot more patience than most people expect.

So my suggestion would be to start with a couple of simple books.

Navgraha Purana by V.S. Rao.

Astrology for beginners by B.V. Raman.

The goal here isn't to become an astrologer. The goal is to see whether your interest survives after actually studying the subject.

If after reading these books you're still curious and want to know more, then it's probably worth going deeper.

At that point, pick one school of thought and stick to it.

Personally, I'd suggest starting with Parashari.

And stay with it for a while.

Not a month. Not two months.

Give it at least a year.

Most people don't realize how deep Parashari Astrology really is. They read parts of BPHS and immediately move on to something else. I think that's a big mistake.

Spend time with Brihat Parashar Hora Shastra

Read it slowly.

Read it again.

Then read it again after a few months.

A funny thing happens with BPHS. You'll revisit chapters you thought you understood and suddenly notice things that completely went over your head the first time.

Try to read between the lines.

Not everything is stated explicitly by rishis.

After you've built a decent foundation, start studying Dashas.

Begin with Vimshottari.

In my opinion every astrologer should eventually have at least two-three Dasha systems in their toolkit, but Vimshottari should be the first one.

For that, I'd recommend:

Vimshottari and Udu Dashas by Sanjay Rath.

Timing of Events Through Vimshottari Dasha by K.N Rao.

And later, after you've gained sufficient knowledge in Parashari Astrology,

Jaimini Sutramritam by Iranganti Rangacharya , Predicting Through Jaimini's Chara Dasha by K.N Rao.

One more thing.

After, At some stage, try to find a Guru.

I'm not saying you can't learn from books. You absolutely can.

But astrology is one of those subjects where guidance matters. A good teacher can save you years of confusion and help you understand things that are difficult to pick up from books alone.

That's probably why it has traditionally been taught through the Guru-Shishya Parampara.

The Avadhoot who chose Ram Raksha Stotra over gemstones and quick fixes

I have been reading this book Yogis, Destiny and the Wheel of Time by K.N. Rao and there is a part about Nagridas Baba Ji that fascinated me a lot

So this Baba Ji lived in Vrindavan. He was an avadhoot, never touched money, cooked for himself, and would just sit under a banyan tree. People would come to him all the time with their horoscopes, asking him to fix their problems. Job issues, health scares, family trouble. They wanted some quick miracle.

But he would tell them something else.

He would say that most people do not even try to do the right karma. They just want all their suffering to go away after one puja or one remedy. According to him, we are all actors playing out a script we wrote for ourselves. But that does not mean we cannot change things. If we put in sincere effort, pray honestly, and try to live properly, things slowly start improving.

And then this story from the book

Some man challenged him to bring a dead tree back to life. The tree was completely dried up, nobody thought it would ever grow again. That night, Baba Ji had a dream where he was told to recite the Ram Raksha Stotra. He did that. Within fifteen days, the tree had green leaves, flowers, fruits. Everything.

But Baba Ji never made a big deal about it. For him, it was not about showing powers. It was about showing what that stotra can do. It protects you, it gives life, it shields you from the worst of what destiny throws at you.

The stotra itself came to Rishi Budha Kaushika in a dream from Lord Shiva. So it is considered a Kavach. Spiritual armour. You recite it and it is believed to create a protective layer around you.

Now what Baba Ji kept saying was that remedies are not about escaping your karma. They are about building inner strength. If you live honestly, if your life has some spiritual discipline, the planets eventually become favourable. They stop working against you. And the Ram Raksha Stotra is not a shortcut. It helps you go through your struggles without breaking. He would say that big tragedies become lighter, and small ones just fade away when your vibration is high enough.

Has anyone here incorporated the Ram Raksha Stotra or some other traditional kavacha/stotram into their daily practice? Have you noticed any changes, either spiritually or in the way life unfolds?

I'd love to hear your experiences.

Since many people have been asking, I thought I'd mention it here.

No, I don't offer career and education readings for students for free. However, I charge only a very very nominal fee for students who don't earn yet , just for the sake of energy exchange (because sometimes people tend to take things for granted and don't value the guidance)

These are detailed, in-depth readings aimed at providing guidance regarding career and education. If you're interested, feel free to check my profile, read my articles, and go through the reviews.

If my approach resonates with you, you're welcome ,all the details are available on my profile.

The Mighty Jupiter: Blessings and Curse of a guru

So Jupiter is moving into Cancer on June 2nd. By now, every astrologer on the internet has probably told you what this transit means, which signs will benefit, which houses get activated, what kind of opportunities , themes might show up. And honestly, that's all useful. No complaints.

But I wanted to talk about something else. Something a bit deeper.

Not what Jupiter gives. But what Jupiter is.

Most people know Jupiter as the planet of wealth, luck, promotions, children, all that. And yes, that's part of it. But in Vedic astrology, Jupiter is the natural ruler of the 9th house. The 9th house is about father, ancestors, lineage, blessings, dharma, and the punya that gets passed down through generations.

So basically, Jupiter represents the blessings or the karma that comes through your family line.

Your Jupiter could be sitting in any sign or house depending on your ascendant. It might rule different houses for you. But its natural quality is always the same. It always carries that 9th house energy.

If your ancestors did good karma, those blessings can flow down to you. If there is unresolved karma in the lineage, that can also get passed on. That's why Jupiter is not just about wealth. It's about inheritance, not just property or money but karmic inheritance as well.

Also, Jupiter expands whatever it touches.

That's why a strong, benefic Jupiter is such a big deal. It just makes things better around it. People with a good Jupiter often end up helping others naturally, guiding, supporting. Sometimes their mere presence is good for the people around them.

In a symbolic way, Jupiter turns things into gold. Not literally, but growth does happen.

DevaGuru Brihaspati : Guru of the Devas. Not just a teacher but an advisor, a counselor. Someone Devtas go to when they need guidance.

Here's something interesting. In astronomy, Jupiter has the strongest gravitational pull after the Sun. It actually affects the Sun's movement more than any other planet. The Sun is the King, Jupiter is the Guru. And the Guru has enough influence to move even the King. That's a beautiful symbol. Wisdom is greater than authority. And Sun being the King might alter his decisions on DevGuru's Advice.

Jupiter is also a protector. Astronomically, its gravity captures or deflects many objects that would otherwise head toward Earth. Astrologically, it works the same way. The blessings from your dharma, your ancestors Good karma, act as protection. You escape things that should have gone wrong. Help shows up unexpectedly. The right person appears at the right time. That is Jupiter's grace.

Now about Retrograde Jupiter.

People with retrograde Jupiter often carry pending karma around Guru themes, teachers, faith, guidance, ancestors. One thing I have noticed is that they do not trust teachers easily. They question everything. They observe a lot. Even when a genuine teacher is right there, they take time before opening up. That is why many feel finding the right Guru is so difficult. Either the guru is there but trust is missing, or trust is there but difficulty in finding a guru.

Also, if you have retrograde Jupiter, be careful about committing adharma toward genuine teachers, saints, monks, or anyone who sincerely guides others. Jupiter takes that seriously. When there is pending Jupiter karma, those actions can bring results faster than expected.

But there is a positive side. The moment a retrograde Jupiter person truly accepts a teacher from the heart, things start moving in a positive direction.

So yes, a genuine Guru can play a very important role for these people.

One last thing, and this is important for anyone doing astrology, healing, counseling, or any occult work.

The moment you start guiding someone's life, you are taking on responsibility. Whether you call yourself a Guru or not. You are influencing decisions. That carries karma.

The 8th house is astrology, occult, hidden knowledge, tantra. Now apply Bhavat Bhavam. The 10th house from any house shows the karma of that house. The 10th from the 8th is the 5th house. The 5th house is children, future generations, what we pass forward.

This means that the karma you create by using or misusing occult knowledge does not always stop with you. It can move through your lineage. If you genuinely help people and use sacred knowledge responsibly, that blessing moves forward. But if you misuse astrology, give wrong guidance, exploit vulnerable people, manipulate for money, that karma also moves forward.

And here is the harder part. Misusing this Para Vidya, this sacred knowledge, can go as far as ending your bloodline. Not a single child, not a single descendant to carry the name forward. That is how seriously the tradition views this.

Not Everyone Is Meant for Occult ..But If You Are, You’ll Know

I’ve seen this pattern again and again.

Some people try to learn astrology or occult and leave it after some time. But some people, no matter what they do, keep getting pulled back into it. It doesn’t feel like a choice for them. It feels natural.

There’s a reason behind this.

In Vedic astrology, certain combinations show a natural inclination towards secret sciences, occult, mysticism, healing, and astrology.

From a Parashari perspective, the logic is quite simple. The 5th house represents poorva punya and past life karma, while the 8th house represents hidden knowledge, occult sciences, transformation, and deeper layers of life. When these two connect, a person naturally develops an interest in things that are not visible on the surface.

Some common combinations where this is seen:

5th and 8th lord connection

5th and 8th house connection

5th lord in 8th or 8th lord in 5th

Both lords placed together in any house

5th and 8th lords connected through the 12th house

Sun (natural 5th lord) placed in the 8th

Lagna lord connected with the 8th house or Scorpio

Lagna lord and 8th lord connection

These combinations show a mix of past life merit and present life access to hidden knowledge. That’s why such people don’t stay limited to surface-level understanding.

Going a bit deeper, this is also clearly seen in Bhrigu Nandi Nadi, which takes a more direct approach.

Here, the role of Ketu becomes very important, especially when it connects with certain planets:

Saturn and Ketu connection (together or through trines)

Jupiter and Ketu connection (together or through trines)

Mercury and Ketu connection (together or through trines)

The reason behind taking these planets is simple. Saturn represents karma and effort, Jupiter represents wisdom and guidance and is Jeevkaraka in BNN , Mercury represents learning and analysis, and Ketu represents hidden knowledge and detachment. When Ketu connects with these, the person naturally moves towards occult, astrology, mysticism, or healing practices.

Nakshatra level also adds another layer to this. If important planets are placed in certain nakshatras, the inclination increases further. Some of the nakshatras often seen in such charts are Ashwini, Hasta, Ashlesha, Bharani, Shatabhisha, and Anuradha. These nakshatras carry a certain depth or connection with healing, transformation, or hidden aspects of life.

One important thing that is often missed is the condition of the luminaries. Not everyone with these combinations becomes good at astrology or occult. For that, the Sun and Moon need to be strong. In Jyotish, the Sun is considered the right eye and the Moon the left eye of Ishwara. Since Jyotish itself is divine light, without strong luminaries, the clarity to actually see and interpret things properly does not develop.

Let me know how many of these combinations and placements are in your chart.

Ganesh Pancharatnam and Ketu

Ganesh Pancharatnam is a prayer written by SriPad Adi Shankaracharya. “Pancharatnam” means five ratnas/jewels dedicated to Lord Vinayaka, so it consists of five verses. It is short but has a deep significance. The stotram describes Ganesh ji not as a god but as a force that brings clarity. This force removes obstacles and stabilizes the mind. It clears confusion and slowly makes thinking more grounded and stable. It brings a sense of calm and direction in life.

The connection with Ketu is very important. Ketu is a planet that pushes a person inward. It creates confusion and detachment, and sometimes it brings obstacles. Its main objective is to make a person understand their inner self. When a person meditates on Ganesh Panchratnam, their focus naturally turns inward. Meditating on Ganesh Pancharatnam helps balance Ketu, especially when Ketu afflicts other planets in the chart.

Ganesh Pancharatnam also helps reduce the malefic aspects of the scorpio. Scorpio is intense and emotional, and it is deeply internal. When Scorpio is afflicted in a chart, it can bring heaviness, fear, and overthinking. Meditating on Ganesh Pancharatnam helps neutralize that intensity and gives better control over emotions.

Ganesh ji is directly connected with buddhi, so his worship is one of the ways to balance Mercury. It improves clarity, communication, and decision-making. A simple remedy is to offer modak or laddoo every Wednesday at some temple dedicated to Ganesh ji.

Even sitting quietly and listening to Ganesh Pancharatnam with awareness can bring a change in positive.

Imagine a person who is not thinking only about today or even this life. Their mind naturally goes deeper. They question things like karma, purpose, paap–punya. They are drawn toward knowledge, research, spirituality, or understanding hidden patterns.

Even when they act, it’s not always for immediate gain. They think long-term, sometimes in a way others don’t even understand. They tend to work in a deeper, less visible way which benefits the society as a whole.

Case 2: Kshatriya Rashis/signs (1, 5, 9)

Now imagine someone who feels responsible. They can’t just sit and think, they want to act. Maintain order, take charge, protect, lead.

These people care about respect, identity, and doing something visible. They are the ones who stand in front, take decisions, help others directly, and sometimes carry the “burden” of responsibility. Name and recognition also matters to them.

Case 3: Vaishya Rashis/signs (2, 6, 10)

This is a very practical person. They think in terms of survival, money, value, exchange.

If something is not useful or not giving results, they don’t stay there too long. Business mindset, resource management, practical thinking.

If someone has many planets here, they naturally start thinking in terms of “how can this actually work in real life” and “how can this generate income.”

Case 4: Shudra Rashis/signs (3, 7, 11)

This person is more action-oriented but in a different way. They are the base of the system. They keep things running. Work, service, doing what needs to be done.

There is movement, interaction, networking, but patience can be less. They don’t always overthink meaning or philosophy, they just do what is required in the moment.

The same pattern reflects in grahas/planets also:

Sun, Mars : Kshatriya

Moon, Mercury : Vaishya

Jupiter, Venus : Brahmin

Saturn : Shudra

Rahu–Ketu : Mleccha

Now one of the most common confusions people have which planet works well in which sign should be much clearer. A planet tends to perform best in the signs that belong to its own varna/class , also offcourse in their own signs and exaltion signs.

Then comes the nature of rashis/signs (prakriti)

Vata (3, 7, 11) : options, skills, movement, intelligence

Pitta (1, 5, 9) : action, execution, less overthinking

Kapha (4, 8, 12) : depth, feeling, imagination, sensing

Earth (2, 6, 10 ) : the most practical, real-world execution signs.

Some Lesser Known but basic Sutras and Rules of Astrology

The more I study Astrology, the more I realize the deepest things are usually hidden inside very simple observations. A lot of sutras start making sense only after watching charts for years.

One thing I noticed repeatedly is how misunderstood Saturn is. People fear Saturn too much, but Saturn’s connection with hard work and long life actually makes sense. Saturn pushes discipline, routine, endurance, physical effort. Without movement and effort, the body and mind slowly decay. Saturn also creates fear sometimes only to bring people back onto the correct track.

Another interesting thing is about Mercury. Mercury behaves exactly like its surroundings. Sit Mercury with benefics, it acts benefically. Sit it with malefics, suddenly it starts behaving more like them. Which is why many old astrologers compare Mercury to a child absorbing its environment.

I also slowly stopped seeing malefic planets as “bad.” Their role is much deeper than that. Malefics push human beings toward their highest potential through pressure and discomfort. Most people only discover their true strength during difficult periods.

One pattern I’ve seen again and again: if the kendras (1,4,7,10) are occupied mainly by malefics, life usually does not unfold very smoothly. The person often has to struggle harder for stability or success.

And honestly this same logic can be applied house-wise too. If you take any house as Lagna and its kendras are filled only with malefics, then peaceful results related to that house become difficult.

The Sun is another graha people misunderstand. Its malefic nature is necessary because somebody has to maintain law, order, authority, and boundaries. During strong Sun periods people naturally become stricter with their limits and start saying: “This is my boundary.” And naturally some people dislike them for it.

One strange thing that repeats very often in charts: surgeries and operations usually involve strong Mars and Ketu influence somehow.

And honestly Mars itself is a very survival-oriented graha. Mars wants to protect, secure, and keep a person alive. Which is probably why Mars does not always work comfortably inside emotional signs.

Another interesting rule: people born during a malefic Mahadasha many times do not get hit as harshly by that same Mahadasha later in life. Almost like some karmic adjustment already started early itself, learnt this sutra from my guru.

One thing many people don’t notice: if the Ascendant/Lagna, 7th house, or Lagna lord have no connection with malefics, sometimes the person struggles with intense effort or sustained hard work. Meanwhile people with stronger benefic influence there may work more mentally or subconsciously rather than through raw struggle.

And there’s a very important difference between benefics and malefics becoming functional malefics.

If a benefic becomes a functional malefic, its Mahadasha may still create difficulties but usually not in an extremely destructive way.

But when a natural malefic also becomes a functional malefic, that period can completely shake life if the person refuses to evolve according to that graha’s lesson.

One important rule about the Moon: when the Moon is too close to the Sun, the mind gets overwhelmed by the Sun’s intensity. But when the Moon is around 3 houses away from the Sun, it behaves much more benefically and independently. You can actually notice the difference in emotional processing.

This honestly changed how I see remedies too.

Sometimes a planet enters life because it wants to transform something inside us. And instead of only trying to “remove” that planet through remedies, sometimes the wiser thing is understanding: “What exactly is this planet trying to turn me into?”

Because in the end, you cannot completely remove the lesson of a planet that has entered your Mahadasha. At some point, you have to implement what that planet is trying to teach you. That is when the planet slowly stops feeling like punishment and starts becoming transformation.

Thank You
