What are the ways I (30M) can impress a woman romantically?

This question came up because in my past experiences with women, it usually clicks right away.

Now, I migrated to a different country to study (East Asia). I planned not to get into a relationship first until I get my post-graduate degree; however, I fell in love with a female friend (24F). Long story short, we chatted for a couple of months, but it ended up with her explaining that she may need more time for herself since she went over a breakup a few months before we chatted, and she's trying to adjust to her new job in a distant city. She also has anxieties which make it easier for her to get mentally exhausted. Plus she also has her goals for music (we're both musicians).

She thinks I'm really nice, but not in a romantic way. And she initially wanted to give me a chance; however, her current fragility got in the way.

Now it got me thinking, what if I meet another woman who gives me a chance even though she doesn't initially like me? I'm asking since I lack experience with this kind of setup.

EDIT: u/drpolz3k is right. I forgot to mention that we were initially friends, so it must've also been difficult for her to adjust. And the women I like are like my female friend: kind, humble, mature, and makes me feel good when we're together. It was just a bonus that she's cute and has a great singing voice.

I also workout regularly, dress with style according to the occasion, and am always on time even in my non-romantic endeavors.

Ako lang ba may tingin na overhyped 'yung Ozarugami vs Oxsmugg?

Bago ko mapanood 'yung upload, grabe nababasa kong comments. BOTN daw.

No hate sa parehong MCs.

EDIT: Siguro iba talaga 'pag live.

Is it worth it to give up 'career prestige' for an ordinary job with more benefits?

I'm a 30+ M who's currently doing a Ph D in STEM in a foreign country and about to finish next year. However, I'm really tempted to go out of academia and research after I get a degree.

Being a professor is seen as a prestigious job, especially in the country where I'm studying. However, in my research field which is related to disasters, I am encouraged by my adviser to work every time there's a disaster. I remember writing my first paper and missing two long holiday weekends during that month just to finish the paper as soon as possiblen

My second problem conflicts with one of the reasons why I pursued Ph D in the first place. This research field in my home country is not yet well-established; however, my few countrymen who work on it seem like they don't like people working on this research field. These guys are in separate govt agencies, so some of them actually have control with data, or gatekeep knowledge when my current research institute asks to collaborate with them.

Third, other jobs are more tempting not only financially but also in work-life balance. A job that I'm currently looking at is a STEM teacher for grades 10-12 at an international school. If the salary for a post-doc researcher, who works on holidays and overtime without extra pay, is twice the minimum wage, the salary offered in the international school is triple the minimum wage. Plus they pay for overtime and I don't need to be in a race to publish papers every time a disaster happens.

So yeah, I was thinking that after working in the industry, getting my masters, getting in love with research while doing so, only to have a lot of reasons to be burned out in Ph D, I'm tempted to give up a prestigious career just to have a job with higher salary and better work-life balance.

As part of the rhythm section, is it okay to go to an open jam without having learned something new?

My friends would often go to the local open jam having prepared a new tune that they want to performed. I also got peer-pressured to do the same even though I play the bass. I'm also still starting out (one year and a half learning jazz bass) but I think the host and the bar owner already likes me being there since there's usually just me and the house bassist who'd play bass.

However, I need to do a lot of day job stuff recently so I didn't manage to learn a new tune. So I was thinking if it's okay to go there.

CD shops and jazz bars around Fukuoka International Congress Center

Hi, I got the chance to travel around Fukuoka International Congress Center. Does anyone here know some CD shops (or thrift stores that sell secondhand ones) and jazz bars around the location? TIA!

Shows like I'm Married But...

So I've been binge-watching Taiwanese dramas, and it has helped a bit with expanding my vocabulary and phrase knowledge (I'm also taking up Chinese classes, dw). So far, I think the most helpful to learning Mandarin are shows like I'm Married But... because of the close-to-natural way of talking. Especially Alice Ke's acting, I find myself getting used to her rhythm of speech.

I've tried watching dramas with serious atmosphere, like Light The Night and The Trade War, and, while both of them are absolutely amazing in terms of cinematography and acting, I'd rather rotate between watching a serious drama and a light-hearted one.

I'm currently watching Office Girls and while it doesn't have the same level of cinematography as I'm Married But, it still makes me laugh from time to time. Plus I'm also getting used to the rhythm of speech of the other actors, not just Alice Ke's.

What is the 'hard-to-swallow' dating preference for most men?

Most women want to date men who are tall, and height is something that you're either just born with or without.

Hence the title question. Is there something similar for MOST men, a dating preference that's hard to swallow? I kinda find it hard to think about it because my guy friends have different physical preferences. I, for one, don't really have a set preference.

EDIT: My experience and observation with people I know irl matches with u/alexmate84's answer. I don't agree with age and weight but they're also majority of upvoted answers so there's the numbers.

Bringing a bass guitar to hostels

Hi, I'm planning to go to Taipei next month. I'd be bringing my laptop and bass guitar. Are there hostels that offer personal storage cabinets for something as large as a bass guitar? I'm afraid someone might steal it. TIA

For musicians, when did you feel more confident about your playing?

I've been dedicating my free time to learning and practicing jazz bass for almost two years now, and while I get compliments from my peers who started learning jazz the same time or about two to four years ahead of me in their journey, I still have that feeling that I'm still on the tip of the tip of the iceberg. While I've played more than fifty standards now, only a small portion I know how to play the melody, and even a smaller portion which I can play without the chord sheet. I don't have problem playing the other keys because in my mind I can easily transpose them (almost two decades of playing popular genres helped with this).

And I think there's still more tunes to learn out there. I know some guys who've been playing for six years but once in a while, they'd encounter tunes that they don't know yet. Right now, I'm focusing on learning more tunes and being a better part of the rhythm section. I believe that the basics or fundamentals should be cemented first.

And yeah my solos are still shit. Serviceable would probably be the most polite way to say it. But I don't know. I've listened to a lot of jazz, transcribed stuff, and once in a while I'd encounter stuff that equally amaze me and make me ask why did this bassist do a certain controversial stuff but ended being palatable (this goes both ways in comping and soloing decisions).

In short, there's still a galaxy of knowledge there that I think I need to grasp before I become competent. Probably would take me five more years, but I already planned to fully transition to jazz until my senior years. The actual reason I've transitioned to it from popular genres is that, 1) I think I've played enough rock, funk, and reggae that I don't learn anything new about it, and that 2) I think jazz is more accepting of having a wide range of demographic among a band's players.

Granted that the base is not yet maxed, they still have a lot of hard-hitters already. Also, after the Fireball, I think my attack got sloppy. I didn't intend for the Queen to die.

Disclaimer: she is Taiwanese, and my Taiwanese friends told me before that it's more common for their culture to be friends with someone first before confessing. I know some guys who also went this route. That's why I also avoid being direct with asking her out; I want to build us up first before confessing. (If there are Taiwanese people out there, I'd like to hear your thoughts.)

So I met her since last year around the end of May. We became close through music; she's a beginner vocalist while I've been playing guitar for more than a decade. I can really feel that we have chemistry in and out of music. However, our relationship is totally wholesome last year since she had a boyfriend.

She broke up with her boyfriend around the end of January, and then we chatted for a few days, with me being concerned with her moving on. She also moved to another place (about two hours of commute) to work. Then I didn't chat for a month (thinking that she already has a new life) until last month, she said she's visiting our town for a few days. When we finally met, I just really felt something more.

I gave her a hint of what I feel by chatting that I wish we could've spent a longer time together and that I miss her (in Chinese 我想 妳). She joked that she was scared, and that she reminded me of the time when I told her I'm gonna visit the city where she works some time this year. Then we chatted for several days.

However, she said she's not comfortable chatting. She mentioned that has anxieties, and that her mind is usually tired after finishing her tasks. I also notice that she's not really much visible online; she has a time lock for her social media. And sometimes when we're together, I'd notice that she has a lot of unreplied chats on her phone's notification center.

She's also a shy and sensitive person. She mentioned once that she's more comfortable talking to us foreigners than to her fellow countrymen.

Now, we haven't chatted for a week and I don't know how to proceed. I really miss her but at the same time, I can't find anything to talk about. And because our relationship is still on the undefined stage (and considering Taiwanese culture), I'm afraid to mention to her any more of my feelings, nor could I make a demand for us to call. Another thing that I'm considering is that she might not have been fully able to move on from her ex, although she told me that they broke up on good terms.

Lastly is she might have found a new guy. While she told me she hasn't have any new friends there, there was one time she showed me a video of her listening to a jazz bar. And beside her table was a beer. I asked her about it and she said it's from another musician who chatted with her for a bit, although they didn't exchange numbers.

TL DR: I don't know how to proceed with my Taiwanese friend who is in another place and who is uncomfortable with online chatting.
