Forgotten How Grim Sharpe's Enemy Was...
Got back into watching Sharpe again on ITV. Absolutely loved it in the 90s as a teen but hadn't watched Sharpe's Enemy for nearly 30 years and forgotten how grim it was. Easily the darkest episode in the series.
Hakeswill is as evil as I'd remembered and Poselthwaite played him fantastically, but Pot au-Feu (played by Tony Haygarth) was something else. Proper matter of fact psychopath who let Hakeswill rape and run a brothel with trafficked women for the deserters because it suited him and gave him and Hakeswill cash before the ransom money came through. Haygarth always excelled in playing horrible characters like this.
Lady Farthingdale's beautiful maid at 4 mins 58 seconds in is presumably raped by Hakeswill and others at the inn because we see her later at 1 hour 6 mins and 19 seconds being forcibly taken from Sarah Dubreton's quarters and she's dishevelled, covered in dirt, has bruises on her neck, decolletage and arms, and her dress and blouse is soiled. Presumably she was put in Dubreton's quarters to let Dubreton know what will happen to her if the ransom money doesn't come through. Then the maid is thrown into the crowd below to be gang raped for stolen loot. Later on, Hakeswill kills Teresa Moreno and tries to rape Lady Farthingdale too
Is the maid ever mentioned again? Even though she's a minor character played by an extra, it's horrific what happened to her. As a father, I picked up on way more than I did as a teenager and it made me a bit uneasy watching this again. Great episode though.
