Word by word literal translations

Disclaimer: using images are clearly superior to “nativize” the word from the beginning , but here I’m talking about those words which cannot be conveyed by image alone.

I’ve seen quite a few people speak against word for word literal translation however :

1: How else is an absolute beginner supposed to learn vocabulary? Going through an entire Sarf course and then being given root letters to figure it out by intuition ? (The potential meanings of roots would have to be presented with translation anyway)

2: After enough repetition the translation fades away over time , and you can start intuitively making connections with other words derived from the same root. The initial translation was just a bridge , nothing more .

Anyone planning on memorizing ahaadeeth after Qur’aan ?

For those of you who are in the process of memorizing Qur’aan , and those who already have and are revising, do you plan to start a famous Hadith collection? If so , which one?

Disclaimer: Assuming you have a solid grasp of the Arabic language

Question for native Arabic Speakers doing hifdh

I assume most (not all) native Arabic speakers have a big advantage in understanding the meanings of aayaat directly (such as common words and sentence structures).

When you guys are doing hifdh , are you also doing some casual Tafsir or Ghareeb al Quran research along the way?

Conflicts between Warehousing and Transport

Are there common disagreements between the two fields/departments? Both fall under the category of Logistics but I’d assume they have two very different views/approaches.

Do objectively successful people have less screen time?

Screen time is awful for me and mostly just destabilizes my day , but I’m wondering if that’s just because people like myself are just inherently dysfunctional . I observe people with better careers and more stable lives indulging in scrolling . Is there any correlation between socio-economic status and screen time?

The logistics of looting

Historically , what were some methods by which guerrillas would successfully move loot away from main routes?
Any kind of route outside of official supply/trade routes must have been treacherous, unless an alternative network had been meticulously developed

“Stationary Bandit Theory”

“Under conditions of anarchy, "roving bandits" engage in uncoordinated theft, destroying incentives to invest and produce. A bandit who settles and monopolizes theft—becoming a "stationary bandit"—gains an "encompassing interest" in the territory's prosperity, leading to regular taxation rather than total plunder, provision of public goods (such as protection), and encouragement of economic growth.” (From the Wikipedia article)

The state is a giant protection racket , regardless of the ideology or rhetoric it espouses.

This appears to transcend the political compass. Are there any solid arguments against this?

The strategic utility of ruined cities/towns

At face value it makes sense why an army would occupy the countryside . Access to crops , grazing land , water , natural cover like forests and mountains , etc . But it isn’t immediately obvious why occupying a city (which is often ruined , emptied of its wealth , contaminated by chemicals and corpses etc.) past the point of looting is “strategic”. Using buildings as cover? The symbolic importance the city represents? What’s the point?

40 Hadeeth of Sahaabah

It would be very cool if, similar to Nawawi’s 40, statements/actions of the Sahabah R.A. regarding fundamental principles of deen were compiled. Has this been done already?

Was the average soldier throughout history simply malnourished?

When I read or hear about wars , difficult terrains , prolonged conflict etc. I can’t conceive of how it was logistically possible for the average soldier to be adequately fed or hydrated . Was it simply the norm for combat to be synonymous with constant hunger and dehydration ?

Receiving, Inventory, Shipping, and …

Is the triplet of:

Receiving (“the stuff coming in”)
Inventory (“the stuff you have right now”)
Shipping (“the stuff going out”)

The true core of this field ? Is there a 4th component equally as fundamental ? Such as visibility/tracking

Beginners using the Quran itself as a source of vocab/grammar/input

This is an interesting discussion I want to open up because there are varying opinions on this. I understand that not everyone on this sub is Muslim so this may be more applicable to Muslims as this would also be a devotional act.

Some would say that you should learn the language as a whole first (bayna yadayk series , graded readers , vocabulary that may or may not be present in the Qur’aan)

Some would say that Quranic vocabulary is the foundation of all subsequent vocabulary learning due to it’s importance as the greatest book and peak of the language

I personally take a hybrid position : it is the best first source , but you need to learn the language as a whole , then circle back and revisit the Qur’an , reinforcing your first words but with a new depth

Let me know what you guys think.

Ethnic groups as “brands”

A band/clan/ tribe begins to distinguish itself from the parent group by adopting a certain “style” or habit/activity that makes them “famous” or popular . An informal and creative nickname circulates , eventually becoming the ethnonym . Creative slang develops into distinct vocabulary . Like a gang , a clique , who’s quirks become tradition .

This is completely unscientific but I’ve often thought of the origin of ethnic groups as playing out like this . What do actual anthropologists think ?

The Arabization of Islamic learning

It seems that beyond the most dire resources (booklets for brand new Muslims and children I.e. tenets of Eemaan, illustrations and instructions on wuduu’, salaah , seerah etc) any deeper Islamic studies ought be Arabic-centric.

Perhaps most of what has been translated should not have been translated , as Anglophone Muslims can now delve into issues and argumentation while the Arabic of Qur’aan and simple Mutoon is pending. In-depth fiqh / aqeedah / usool al hadeeth courses in English seems like it invites intellectualism and diversion from the basics.

I’ve come across a YouTube channel run by a brother (Mustafaa Nicolas) who presents texts in a word-by-word fashion in which the Arabic vocabulary and applied grammar is explained. This slow and deliberate pace also encourages better absorption of the content itself. This seems like a simple yet far superior approach to “Islamic studies” for Anglophones.
