Keeping track of cables

How are we organising cables?

With every new usb operated device we buy we get yet another cable. We have so many c to c cables now it’s driving us mad.

My husband wants to catalogue them all, I think this will be challenging to do. Any strategies to keep track? Should we minimize the number we have?

4 month olds - when does your baby go to bed?

I’m just curious, as I know there’s quite a range!

Our baby used to go to bed around 8.30/9 pm and only wake a few times a night but over the last 6 weeks his sleep has been turned on its head! He wakes every 1.5-2 hours overnight.

We think the 4 month sleep progression hit him early and is here to stay, but we’ve tried to remain consistent with a late bed time and 7.30 am wake up.

Until earlier this week we put him down for a short bridging nap at 7 pm and he…just slept. And slept. And slept. 12 hours of sleep with 3 wakes. 7 pm - 7 am.

So I’m now rethinking everything 🙃

Advice on manual vs electronic pumping!

Would love some wisdom from those who have been in my shoes!

I’ve EBF my 4 month old to date.

I’ve used a Medela Harmony manual pump a few times to try a bottle of pumped milk and baby has taken the bottle, but generally I don’t make a habit of pumping as breast feeding is easier.

Next month, I’ll need to be away from my baby for 6 hours. I’ve never been away from him for more than 1.5 hours, so I’m feeling anxious.

My plan is to pump three bottles to leave with my mum, and to have some formula available as a just in case.

I’ve never pumped this much milk before! I find the manual pump easy to use, but slow. It takes me a while to fill a bottle.

My sister has given me a medela swing maxi secondhand but I’ll need to replace the tubing as there’s discoloration in the tubes. I’m wondering, is it worth buying the new tubes to try it out? Will an electronic pump really work faster and be more efficient?

Any other advice would be appreciated, I’m nervous about this first! I presume I’ll need to pump at least once on the day I’m away from my bub to avoid engorgement and keep my supply up (although I’ve had an over supply in the past and generally never have supply issues now).

Advice for sleep budgeting

FTM to a 15 week old baby, whose sleep became extremely fragmented around the 11 week period.

I have a sense that perhaps he hit that sleep progression a little early.

Overnight, he went from sleeping 8 hour stretches (heavenly) to waking every 45 minutes (hell lol).

We’ve been having a lot of split nights too.

I’ve had so much conflicting advice. My maternal health nurse insisted he needs more daytime sleep but…any time I extend naps during the day, our nights are crap.

7.30 am wake up, 9 pm ish bed time.

I try to cap the last nap around 4.30 pm but it’s such a long final wake window for him and he’s usually super cranky and hard to dial down. By the end he’s so cranky. If he does sleep between 5-6.30 pm then he ends up waking frequently through the night.

He doesn’t nap very well during the day, maybe 4 x 30 minutes while we’re on the go. Carrier naps usually, occasionally contact naps which I think I need to stop as I’ve read Possums is anti contact naps?

I’m trying to do a reset at the moment to get a sense of how much sleep he needs but I am so exhausted that I’m struggling to sleep math.

Any advice on how to reset? Would he be better off having his longer nap in the morning then short sharp naps in the afternoon / evening?

FTM running on fumes

Not sure if I just need some solidarity or advice.

Our 14 week old was a relatively good sleeper until the 2 month mark. He was giving us occasional 7 hour stretches, more commonly would sleep 4 hour stretch with two wake ups after that to nurse, which was great.

When he began rolling at 2 months, we had to transition from swaddle to arms out sleep sack and his sleep became very fragmented. He would wake every 20-45 minutes overnight for about two weeks.

Things haven’t improved even though he’s adjusted to sleeping arms out.

He wakes up every 1.5 hours like clockwork, usually crying. I have to either rock or feed to sleep every time, which takes about 40 minutes to resettle him. He’s in a bedside bassinet, but even when we co-sleep in bed (following safe sleep 7) he’s still waking just as frequently.

During the day, he cat naps a lot but is getting around 2.5-3 hours sleep. We follow the possum approach, and I generally believe in letting his sleep pressure accumulate. He naps a lot in the carrier and out and about on the go. He used to occasionally nap in his bassinet during the day but right now I haven’t even attempted it.

At night, our bed time routine looks like a breastfeed, either a bath or fresh nappy and onsie, a bed time song, and rocking to sleep in a dark room with sound machine. Feeding him to sleep no longer works. I think if anything it is aggravating his silent reflux. He usually sleeps anywhere between 8.30-10 pm. His wake up is between 7-7.30 am.

The wake ups overnight are killing my husband and me and my mental health has tanked. We both don’t want to sleep train, I prefer attachment style parenting but i am struggling so much right now I don’t even want to touch or hold my baby in the mornings, this morning I just sat in bed crying with the baby next to me. I would be grateful for even 2-3 hour stretches at this point.

Might this be the 4 month pro/regression hitting early? Is there anything I can do to improve his nights? For others who had similar night times like this, did it ever get better? Not like sleep through the night better, but even 2-4 hour stretches?

Early sleep regression?

Going a little crazy atm.

Baby is currently 3 months (14 weeks old).

Around 6-8 weeks, he was sleeping 8 hours through the night. Occasionally would wake once around 3 am for a feed - EBF.

He started rolling around 8 weeks, so we had to transition to an arms out sleep sack and since then sleep has been terrible. In the first week, he would awake every 45 minutes and need to be rocked or fed to sleep every time. By day 6 I was so sleep deprived we swaddled him again and he slept 10 hours straight. But, as it’s now unsafe to swaddle, we went back to arms out the next day and the pattern continues.

Baby is very active in sleep, rubbing and scratching face, whale tail slamming his legs etc. I know these are regarded as self soothing behaviors but it’s the opposite - he wakes himself up doing these movements and doesn’t do them to go back to sleep.

We’re now lucky if he sleeps 1.5 hour stretches.

If I don’t try to resettle him immediately and leave him in his bassinet, he doesn’t cry. He just loses his drowsiness and we then have a split night situation. Last night he was awake from 2.45 am - 5 am. It killed me.

Husband has dislocated his shoulder and we can’t do split shifts atm either which sucks. He stays up with me out of solidarity most nights but I think that’s crazy. One of us should at least be sleeping!

I’ve been told he’s too young to sleep train. I don’t know if this is an arms out thing or the 4 month sleep regression but we are struggling big time. Looking for any advice that might help.

Bed time routine currently is either a bath or new onsie and nappie, a feed in a dark room with a sound machine on, then a cuddle to keep him upright for a while as he has reflux which is when he usually drops off to sleep. His natural bedtime seems to be between 8.30-9 pm.

Melbourne w/ an eight month old baby

From Sydney, and thinking of spending our Christmas break in Melbourne.

We’ll have an 8 month old baby with us and want to ideally spend a few days out of the city somewhere quieter - maybe the dandenong ranges?

We’ve done Melbourne many times but have never left the city aside for a wedding around the Mornington Peninsula.

Wanting tips for:

+ short nature hikes that would be easy with baby in a carrier
+ off the beaten track experiences
+ any adult focused baby friendly activities you’d suggest in Melbourne and beyond
