Welp, attempted to survive to 26 what's the motto for 27?

Can I ask how freelancers manage to pay rent or a mortgage without a fixed, steady income? Based in Atlanta and not in a position (6 years in the industry) to move to LA or NY to fight for the same little crumbs of gigs available .

I’ve tried freelancing, and honestly, I’ve found the financial uncertainty really stressful. I’d love to hear from people who have been doing it successfully, especially those with kids or other major financial responsibilities.

What do you do when a project ends and you don’t immediately have another one lined up? How do you handle those periods when there’s little or no income, especially in this market?

Would really appreciate hearing how other freelancers make it work long-term. Any advice or experiences would be helpful!

Lost

To preface, I have been in post-production for over 5 years, mainly in dailies, and have worked on a few AE gigs in Atlanta. I am based here in Atlanta. For financial and family reasons, I cannot uproot to move to NY/LA for post work

I am feeling lost about my career. The network I have has no helpful insight or leads. Took part in The Handy Foundation, and though the skills and networking were beneficial at the start. However, myself and other alumni are still waiting to apply what we learned from the program to jobs. They have been few and far between. I have talked to the heads of post houses here in Atlanta and elsewhere to build that connection, but I just get the generic "We don't have anything now, but we will keep in touch." It has been difficult to find consistent AE/dailies jobs. For perspective, I was furloughed from multiple post houses because of a lack of work due to budget constraints. I am not hopeful there will be an upswing in work in film.

growing problems with the channels

I have been a dedicated fan of your channels since the early days of Game Theory and have followed each new channel since its launch.

I have noticed a significant decline in viewership recently. For example, the latest Film Theory episode has not yet reached 100,000 views, despite covering a legacy franchise spinoff. I’ve observed a similar trend with Style Theory, where views appear lower and uploads are less frequent.

I am curious if this shift is due to the current approach to video topics, a change in audience interest, or perhaps viewer fatigue. Additionally, I wonder if the focus on promoting the streaming service may be stretching a decreasing audience too thin.

Walk on set for a job

“this may be a controversial topic- but curious to hear your input- is it still acceptable to walk on to a set and ask the AD for a PA job? or is that a big no no in 2026?”

This topic was brought up in a crew stories group I am in on Facebook and am taken aback by the large amount of comments advising this person to walk into a live set to ask for a job. Op doesn’t specify if she is apart of the crew or a random person see a filming set on location. Are random people just walking on set to get gigs now a days

Theory Channels are pushing to unionize

https://www.instagram.com/p/DYNVR3KGWVm/?igsh=dW85cDBtNW92b2Nx

Per mpeg700 : “The creative and technical workers behind the wildly successful YouTube channels of Theorist Media are still fighting for their union, and one pivotal person has remained silent during this historic fight.

u/Matpatgt, even though it's been 2 years since you left the company, your sustained connection to u/TeamTheorist is undeniable, and your former colleagues that helped you build its success from the ground up very much need your support - please tell u/Clemens_Semel & Lunar X to do the right thing.”
