Explain to me like I’m 5 years old

So I was donating yesterday like usual- I’ve been going twice a week and I’ve used the same arm every time and never had a problem. This time it was different? When they hooked me up not much blood went into the tube when usually it seems to almost shoot in. It took the blood fine but in the first return, I started feeling uncomfortable pressure in building up in my arm and then the machine stopped and we switched arms to finish the donation. I’m wondering how in the world this bruise got this bad so quickly?

Update: thank you all for the explanations+advice I appreciate you all immensely! I can now confidently say I understand what happened to my arm haha also thank you for pointing out the other pictures in this sub that was eye opening- I’m glad it’s not so bad for me at least.

Pulse check frustration

Yes yes i know, this is the millionth post complaining about the pulse check but it's genuinely depressing... I donated successfully my first ever time, but then the second time im not able to do so because of my pulse being "too" high(103 btw). The next time i go to try again and i'm too worried about my pulse requirement, and THAT makes my pulse go up. every other time I try to donate, i fail because of the same thing... the pulse check. I don't get why something that constantly changes throughout the day and something I have absolutely no control over is a requirement for me to donate. Ive even searched online that having an out of range pulse isn't an automatic indication that someone wouldn't be allowed to donate, so then why do they still use it then??? I don't know... I just think that there should be alternate methods than something you literally can't control, and constantly changes throughout the day... Ive been told to not rely on beta blockers but i don't really have a choice anymore.

Please stop playing loud ass videos on your phone in the chair đŸ˜©

I know we’re all here cuz we need more money, and not everyone has ear buds or headphones. But if that’s the case just listen to their radio station or listen to something with subtitles on. There’s enough noise to try and drown out here, it’s just so rude and I hate that it’s becoming acceptable to do everywhere.

What's your Average donation time, from stick to unhook?

Mine ranges from 26 to 33 minutes. I always assumed that was normal, until I started going with a friend who takes almost an hour, sometimes longer.

She is a bit taller than me, but about the same weight, so they take a little more but not much.

Just curious!!!

Do you rotate arms?

Today I decided to use my right arm since I used my left Monday, for some reason I think that I need to give my veins a "break". Problem is, my right arm's vein hangs a left right after the crease in my arm. I warned the guy, he felt it and was confident he could do it. Went for it, the machine ran for about 3 minutes before beeping. He adjusted the needle several times, and finally asked if we can use the other arm. So far, only a few phlebs have been successful with this arm.

Do our veins need a break? Or is that just something I came up with?

Eating spicy food after donating

So I’m new to donating. And after I donate I’m super hungry. The only problem is is that I’m a spicy lover. But after donating it just feels like my mouth is on fire whenever i eat spicy food. And not even like super spicy like the jalapeño in a bowl of pho. Does this happen to any one else or just me.

Jaw soreness?

so i've been donating for a few months now, first at CSL and now i'm sticking with octapharma for the foreseeable future. after my donations this week, i've felt a soreness in my jaw when i eat hours after my donation. this is pretty new for me, since i haven't experienced this last week or even today, despite donating yesterday. i also felt a little nauseous after eating yesterday after i stopped at a resturant and took the bus home.

has anyone experienced this or similar, and if so what should i do to prevent this or further reactions? taking tums made me feel better pretty quickly yesterday, so maybe i just needed more calcium. i always try to drink enough water, but maybe spacing out my weekly donations instead of them being one day apart might help too.

Scabbed over cold sore, can I still donate tomorrow?

New-ish doner here! Google is.. completely unhelpful for this one, so here I am 😅

Last Friday, I started to develop a cold sore on my upper lip, I didn't use abreva or any other thing for cold sores, I just left it alone and tried to keep it dry. A few days ago the scab fell off, and its now scabbed over again (first one was yellowish, now its just dark red, like a scab from a cut would be). What I could find said that, as long as it isn't bleeding or oozing puss its fine, but that was just an AI overview, and those are often wrong (im pretty sure it was getting its info off of a blood donation q&a too?) so I figured i'd just ask here. I donate at CSL if its important

CSL how do I know what my next payment will be?

I just finished up the new donor deal at CSL (5 donations) but there is nowhere on the app to see what my next payment will be. It only shows a chart for the first 5 new donor donations, but nothing after that. Is there anyway to see what the payouts are?

Had my first ever bad experience, blacked out.

I donated plasma during college like 14 years ago. No issues the whole time.

Just did my first donation since then.
Got about 20% through the donation, nurse came over to make an adjustment since the machine wasn’t pumping as good as he’d like, and once he adjusted my needle I started to go.

Told him I’m starting to feel dizzy, saw him gesture for a recovery cart, then said my vision was narrowing and I was out cold.

Came to shortly after with the most out of body experience I’ve ever had. Legs were cramping hard. I could hear them speaking around me but I tried as hard as I could to reply but couldn’t. I don’t do drugs, but my vision could only be described as a really intense trip, I couldn’t focus on anything and it was trippy. Then I tried really hard and I was able to reply with “I can hear you guys speaking but I can’t see yet.”

Then I was suddenly okay.

Talking to the Dr afterward I asked him what would cause it, talked about my diet this morning and he didn’t think it’s that. Just thinks it’s my first time donating in 14 or so years and sometimes reactions like this happen.

What I ate this morning: Protein shake, small amount of oatmeal, large beef stick. Tons of water.

This was my initial donation so it came with the physical first, so a lot of time between my appointment time and when I actually got the needle inserted. So they also gave me more water with electrolytes, a jerky stick, and some goldfish snacks when I got registered.

Anybody else have this happen?
My calves are so damn sore from tensing up during that blackout, I’m back home now and recovering but feel alright for the most part. Just sucked.

Biolife - Got new piercings with sterile equipment (certified piercing only studio) - Do I have to wait to donate?

Essentially the title- I didn't realize it may be an issue. I haven't donated yet, but for some reason I've gotten a few different answers and BioLife themselves aren't replying lmao

Miscommunication? Very frustrating.

Hey guys, I wanted some input on why this happened to me at a Biolife location near me. Last year, I tried to donate and was told I needed a medical clearance to be able to donate because I had P.O.T.S when I was 12-14 (I am 22 now and was 21 at the time). I quite literally had no health insurance or food in my pantry at the time which was why I was trying to donate so this was stressful for me but I fully understood. I finally got medical clearance and just last week went in to grab the form I needed (I had lost my previous one). I was then informed that I had actually been permanently deferred from that first visit. I honestly got angry because they told me there was nothing they could do and they weren't explaining why exactly I had been told to get a medical clearance. I am so frustrated and defeated. I am a college student living by myself and I am struggling to pay bills. I just wanted a reliable side hustle that would also do some good in the world. I went through that whole process for what? And I dont even have P.O.T.S anymore! My cardiologist verified that with me! The guy I spoke to was slightly demeaning and tried to compare it to lupus, saying that just because a lupus patient is asymptomatic doesnt mean they can donate. However, the difference is that I quite literally am not sick anymore while lupus is incurable! I called in to try and get a second opinion from someone and they said they would call back in a week but I have not recieved that call back either :/ Am I crazy for being genuinely upset? Why was I sent on a goose chase for no reason?? Can I go to another donation center instead?

Blood Sample - Proteins too low

Not the finger prick, but the vial they take every 3 months at BioLife. Had an appointment this morning, but woke up to a voicemail from the nurse saying my last sample showed my proteins "a little bit low" and I could come in on Saturday (today is Wednesday) and give another sample. Do I have to wait for that sample to come back before I can donate again? I cancelled today's appointment because I assumed that's what that meant. I gave that last sample a week ago, so am I looking at a week and a half to two weeks before I can donate again? Has this happened anybody else? God I hate being broke.

BioLife

Sheeesh this place has gotten bad. I have spent no less than 3 hours per donation because of a long wait the last 3 donations , doesn’t matter what day or time I come.

Are there any better places to donate or is it the same song and dance everywhere

Fellow Biolifers, what is your pay this week?

I have been on a 4 week hiatus (failed SPE test, 2 weeks to build it back up, and 10 days for results). Last week I saw that it would be 92 if I donated, but today it shot up to 130. Anyone getting more than last week's today?

deferral + new donor promo

hello guys, i’ve recently started to donate plasma for the first time and going to biolife. i was wondering how common is it for the pleb to fail in finding the vein since im deferred for about two weeks (😔) and how it’ll affect that new donor bonus promotion.

this happened on my second appointment where i got poked in both arms but the guy wasn’t able to get blood going—he sent me home saying i was all good for payment but didn’t tell me about the deferral until i went in for my third appointment. the money component is nice but being able to contribute to others is why im still intending to go despite the deferral/possibly missing out on extra money from the promo. does anyone have their own similar experience/advice? i’m accepting that i’ll have to wait for a bit and maybe not extra monies before going back

The good old days

Man, I was going through my history at grifols as I recently started donating there again, and holy shit look at those New/Lapsed donor payouts in 2022! A total of $980! I think the days of $165 from a single plasma donation are sadly behind us 😱.

Donation complications

Hi everyone,
I’ve donated plasma seven times, and during my fifth donation, which was unsuccessful, the place where the needle was suddenly started hurting, and a bump started to form near it under my skin, and the machine stopped (the spot where I was donating from was the usual spot I had all my previous successful donations with). The nurses approached what felt like forever because of how packed the Center was. They pulled it out and told me something was wrong with needle, didn’t give me any explanations, and asked me if I wanted to switch to the other arm. I said yes, but after a few minutes the same things happened again, and they stopped the donation, did not explain what happened, and sent me home. I was on a two week break, then went back to donate again, since I needed the money, and it went pretty smooth. But the one after that, aka my last donation had the same situation going on as the fifth donation. The nurses again just sent me home without explanation. I did my own research, and I’m confused because some say it’s the veins size, some say the needle had moved etc.
Can someone with similar experience or knowledge kindly explain what had happened, and how to avoid it in the future? I’d be very grateful 🙏

I have been deferred for lifetime today (medical reasons)

This happened a few days ago, just wanted to share this because i‘m a little disappointed I never reached the 100 donations (i‘m at 74) and had a thrombocytes donation scheduled for next week. I started donating in april 2025.

I see a sudden MCAS, POTS and hEDS diagnosis is kind of a complete no go I guess PAHAH. Understandable, I called them to let them know about the diagnosis process starting and was (understandably) immediately deferred, even if no official diagnosis was handed to them yet.
I’m glad I could donate what I did, the data from the bloodtests is also very useful for the process!

I was pretty crushed and thought its unfair at first because I thought I tolerated it very well (in hindsight, probably not), my blood and plasma is still usable for others and it gave me many benefits (and i’m a universal blood donor) but I understand why.

Happy donating!
Pusteblume!
