Thoughts on Zoh Amba's new album/her change in direction?

I hadn't listened to any of her new singles until today when I heard that she had a new album out.

To say it's a departure from her free jazz would be putting it mildly. Think a looser and noisier Big Thief and you're most of the way there.

I don't think it's bad at all. It's a good countrified indie rock record, but I have to admit that it's not really my cup of tea.

That said, I am glad she's clearly making the music she wants to make.

One Hit Wonderland: Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand by Primitive Radio Gods

Every so often I pull out this track and I listen to it 5 times in a row. It's a messy, sometimes noisy and beautiful song. I don't even really know what to classify it as. Alternative rock? Even that really doesn't seem right.

I've never listened to the album. The song remains this one absolutely glorious blast of nostalgia.

But yeah. It got to #1 on the alternative charts. 10 on the hot 100. Shockingly the follow up called Motherfucker didn't chart and neither did anything else they ever did.

Does anyone else love this song as much as I do?
