Transfer student here! How are y’all paying for NorthView?

Hi! I’m transferring to UCF for the spring semester and I’m really interested in living at NorthView, preferably in one of the apartment-style options with a private bedroom. I know NorthView is pretty expensive, though, especially compared to some of the other housing options. For anyone living there now or who has lived there before, did you receive any scholarships, grants, financial aid, or anything else that helped cover your housing costs? If so, where did you find/apply for them? I’m planning to work and save as much as possible before spring, but I’d love to lower how much I have to pay out of pocket. I’m also a transfer student, so I know my housing options/priorities may be different from first-year students. Any advice would be appreciated!

Any Portuguese/Kriolu speakers at UCF?

Hi! I’m transferring to UCF in the spring for Business Management and I’m trying to make some friends before I get there. I’m especially curious if there are any Portuguese speakers (especially European or Angolan Portuguese) or Kabuverdianu/Cape Verdean Creole speakers here. I was born in Brockton and grew up around Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole, but unfortunately lost a lot of it, so I’m currently trying to learn again. 😭 I’d love to meet people I can practice with and connect with culturally. Obviously you don’t have to speak any of these languages to be friends with me lol, I’m open to meeting anyone! I just don’t meet many Portuguese/Cape Verdean/Angolan people where I currently live.

What does this even mean

I took my College Algebra CLEP on August 15, but now College Board says my score was canceled on August 8, which makes no sense because I didn’t take the test or even touch the CLEP website that day. I originally had another testing date planned, but I didn’t actually take the exam until the 15th. At the end of the test I saw some kind of warning about my score and exited out, so maybe I accidentally clicked something, but I have no idea. Did y’all have this problem before, and what ended up happening?

Update on college algebra

Apparently, I was studying college algebra the wrong way; however, I have taken multiple algebra classes. I do remember formulas; yet, it doesn’t seem to be sticking with me right now, so I’m just gonna wing it. I’m about to hop in the shower, so I'll take the CLEP. I’ll give you guys an update when I get my score. I am so nervous. I actually started crying mid-study because this is the last credit I need to finish my associate's degree. If I don’t pass, I am 100% cooked.

[UPDATE 1 AUGUST 14th 3:05PM]
I was told I needed to come to campus to take the college algebra CLEP at 3pm today, but when I walked in, they said that wasn’t allowed. Now I have to come back in on Monday, which feels weird because Monday is my birthday! I’ll see if I can take the CLEP online, but the only issue I am having is that my boarding check (I think that's what it's called) won't let me pass because my ID isn't being read correctly due to my laptop's quality…… At least I have time to study hard for this CLEP.

[UPDATE 2 AUGUST 14TH 4:36PM]
After crashing out in my car, I have found a way to book for tomorrow at 1pm; however, I have to drive at least an hour, so my goal is to grind hard tonight and leave at 7am tomorrow and grind at the library nonstop on campus until 12:30pm to take my test. Any tips for last-minute review for college algebra?

[UPDATE 3 AUGUST 15TH 2:37AM]
I knew there was something wrong when I realized I booked a CLEP exam for today, aka Saturday. I don’t recall seeing campus open on Saturdays for testing centers. I know I need sleep right now, but I need to take this CLEP asap.

AITA (or am I overreacting) for asking my neighbor to turn his music down?

I just moved into a new apartment complex in South Florida. The area is mostly Caribbean, especially Haitian families. One of my neighbors lives directly across from me (we’re both on the second floor).

Almost every time he’s outside, he brings out a large speaker and plays music or videos from YouTube/WhatsApp. I honestly don’t mind the music itself. I actually enjoy hearing different genres, including Haitian music.

The issue is the volume and how long it goes on. Sometimes he’ll have it blasting for 5–6 hours straight, and the bass vibrates into my bedroom because my room is closest to the front of the apartment. It happens multiple times a week.

Normally I just deal with it. I’ll wear headphones if I can, but today my headphones were dead, and I’m finishing my last semester of college. I was trying to focus on homework and had a pretty bad headache by that point.
I didn’t even go over myself because I didn’t want to come across as “that neighbor.” My dad noticed how loud it was and politely asked him if he could lower it a little.

Now I kind of feel guilty. I don’t know his situation, and I don’t want to make anyone feel unwelcome or start problems with neighbors. At the same time, I also feel like everyone should be able to enjoy their own apartment without hearing loud bass for hours.

Was I wrong for being upset after my dad woke me up over a water bill?

I’m 18 and currently finishing my last semester for my AA degree. I’ve been under a lot of stress because I’m looking for a job, studying for exams, and trying to help my family financially.

Today, my dad asked me to drive to pay the water bill. I went, paid it, and noticed the amount was different than what we were originally told. Since I didn’t know why, I called him, explained that I wasn’t sure, sent him a picture of the receipt, and left the receipt and keys on the kitchen counter before leaving for school.

When I got home, I took a nap because I’d had a long day. He woke me up and asked me again about the bill. Half asleep, I told him the same thing I’d already said earlier: I didn’t know why the amount changed, and the receipt was on the counter if he wanted to call the water company.

Instead of ending there, the conversation turned into him saying I was lazy, that I was ruining his life, and bringing up unrelated things like my school, my relationship, and other personal issues.

What upset me wasn’t being asked about the bill. It was feeling like I’d already communicated everything I knew, and then the conversation turned into a much bigger argument.

From your perspective, was I wrong for being upset? Is there something I could have handled differently?

AITA for not feeling guilty about having protected sex at 18 after my dad found a condom?

I (18F) still live with my dad while I’m finishing my AA degree. Before anyone asks, yes, I know it’s his apartment, but I also helped him get it after he was dealing with homelessness. I’m not really looking to debate that part because it’s not the issue.

A little background: when I was 16, I became pregnant and ultimately had an abortion. It was an incredibly difficult time, and I don’t regret making the decision because I wasn’t financially or emotionally in a position to raise a child. That experience also made me take contraception very seriously.

Recently, my boyfriend and I had sex for the first time in a long time. We had actually been avoiding it because we’re both trying to focus on school. He lives about 2½ hours away, so we don’t see each other often. When we did have sex, we used a condom.

The embarrassing part is that I accidentally forgot to throw the condom away afterward. My dad found it and was extremely upset.

Here’s where I’m conflicted.

I’m embarrassed that I left it out. I completely understand why that would upset someone, and I wish I had cleaned up after myself.
What I don’t feel guilty about is the fact that I had consensual, protected sex.

I’m 18. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I’m finishing college, I’m actively looking for a job, and I’ve been under a lot of stress lately. I wasn’t trying to be reckless. I just wanted to be close to someone I care about, and we took precautions.

My dad had even told me before that if I was going to be sexually active, I should at least use protection. That’s exactly what I did, so I’m confused why it feels like he’s treating this as if I’ve completely betrayed him.

I understand that parents can have emotional reactions, and I respect that it’s his home. But I also don’t think having consensual, protected sex at 18 automatically makes me a bad daughter.

So, AITA for not feeling guilty about having sex,
even though I do feel embarrassed that I forgot to throw the condom away?

HAVE YOU NOTICED THIS?

To my fellow Cape Verdeans, I wanted to ask how you all feel about the way social media has been portraying Cape Verde lately.
I recently went down a rabbit hole while trying to find more Cape Verdeans in Florida, and I came across a lot of comments that honestly made me uncomfortable. Instead of celebrating our culture, music, history, food, and resilience, I saw many conversations reducing Cape Verde to a place for sex tourism, or fetishizing Cape Verdean women.
As a young Cape Verdean woman, I’ve also started receiving more inappropriate DMs and comments simply because people found out I’m Cape Verdean. Some have left their phone numbers, others have made sexual comments, and just recently I found out that someone pretending to be a Cape Verdean woman was actually a man using a fake account. That experience honestly made me stop and think.
I don’t even post myself that often, so it made me wonder what other Cape Verdeans, especially those who are more active online, have experienced.
Another thing that has really concerned me is that when I search for Cape Verdean communities online, I’m starting to see more and more posts from people who aren’t even interested in our culture. For example, I recently joined a Cape Verdean Facebook group hoping to connect with other Cape Verdeans, and instead I saw posts from people asking to find a Cape Verdean woman for a relationship, and even someone openly asking if any Cape Verdean woman would have an affair with them. Seeing that made me really uncomfortable because I joined to connect with my community, not to see Cape Verdean women treated like a fantasy.
I know not everyone has bad intentions, and I’m not saying everyone thinks this way. However, I am genuinely concerned about how Cape Verde is starting to be viewed online. I don’t want our country to become known for stereotypes instead of our beautiful culture, our music, our history, our food, and our people.
Have any of you noticed the same thing? Have you experienced anything similar, or do you think I’m overthinking it? I’d really like to hear everyone’s perspective, whether you’re Cape Verdean or not. Please keep the discussion respectful.

Any Cape Veardeans in Florida?

Hey everyone! I’m Cape Verdean and originally from Brockton, Massachusetts, but I moved to South Florida (West Palm Beach area) and have been feeling pretty disconnected from the Cape Verdean community down here. Most of the Cape Verdeans I know are family or are located more toward Orlando.

I’ve recently been reconnecting more with my culture, learning more Creole/history, and I was wondering if there are any Cape Verdean communities, events, groups, or people located in South Florida. Would love to connect with more people from the community 🇨🇻

Hello, just a quick question to those who are currently working on the ongoing Canvas issue. As a student, I was wondering if there is any estimate on how long it may take before students are able to access Canvas normally again. I’m asking because today is the last day for a lot of assignments and exams, and while I’ve been able to work around some of the issues, one of my exams is directly on Canvas, so I’m trying my best to plan my remaining work accordingly.

I also wanted to say thank you to everyone currently working on resolving the situation. I can only imagine how stressful this probably is on your side as well, especially with so many students relying on the system right now. Even though I know a lot of us are anxious, we really do appreciate the effort and time being put into fixing the issue and getting everything back up and running.

Hey everyone, I’m having an issue with Respondus LockDown Browser and I’m hoping someone can help quickly. My professor requires us to use both LockDown Browser and webcam monitoring for our exams, and after finally downloading the browser from my college’s official website and setting everything up correctly on my Windows laptop, I noticed that every time I open the exam it goes straight into the quiz instead of starting the webcam setup, room scan, or recording process. I already checked my webcam permissions, tested the webcam through Respondus itself, and even opened the ungraded practice test through LockDown Browser, but it still skips directly to the quiz questions without asking me to do any webcam verification. At this point I genuinely cannot tell if the webcam monitoring was never fully enabled by the professor or if I’m somehow still doing something wrong. I’m nervous because the exams are due tomorrow and I don’t want to be penalized over a technical issue, so if anyone has experienced something similar before or knows what might be happening, I would really appreciate the help!
