I’ve been thinking about what actually makes a good summer watch, beyond the obvious “bright dial = summer” thing.

For me, a good summer watch is something you can wear without overthinking it: decent water resistance, comfortable in the heat, not too delicate, easy to throw on with a rubber/NATO strap, and ideally something that still feels fun on wrist.

I put together a guide on some of the best affordable summer watches with that in mind, divers, quartz beaters, titanium options, colourful pieces, and a few watches that just make sense when the weather gets stupidly hot (like here where I live).

I’ve been spending time with the Citizen Promaster NY0085-86E, and honestly, it reminded me why affordable Japanese divers still have such a strong place in the watch world.

I wrote a full hands-on review here for anyone who wants to go deeper into the watch, specs and ownership impressions.

This is the Coke-bezel automatic Promaster, with the 42 mm steel case, 200 m water resistance, ISO diver certification, left-side crown, mineral crystal, and Citizen’s 8203/8204 automatic movement. On paper, it is a pretty familiar formula. But on wrist, it feels more convincing than the spec sheet suggests.

The biggest surprise for me was the bezel. At this price point, bezel action can be where a lot of affordable divers start to feel cheap, but this one is genuinely excellent: good grip, satisfying action, and proper alignment. The lume is also exactly what I’d expect from a real diver, and the case finishing is better than the price would suggest, with a nice mix of brushed and polished surfaces.

The watch is not perfect. No sapphire crystal, the movement is reliable but old-school, and the bracelet is decent rather than premium. That said, I think some of the criticism around the bracelet is a bit exaggerated. It is comfortable, looks right on the watch, and the diver extension is a useful bonus.

What I like most is that it does not feel like a “dive-style” watch. It feels like a proper affordable tool diver. I paid €240, and at that price it makes a lot of sense, especially if you’re cross-shopping Orient Kamasu, Seiko 5 Sports divers, or even looking at inflated SKX prices.

I also tried it on a few straps (elastic parachute, single-pass rubber NATO-style, and rubber deployant) and it works surprisingly well on all of them. Links for these:

The new Ronda R01 movement could be a big deal for affordable Swiss microbrands

Ronda’s new R01 is interesting because it is not just another basic Swiss automatic. On paper, it brings a lot to the table: 80-hour power reserve, full silicon escapement, free-sprung balance, at least 200 gauss magnetic resistance, and a price around 139 CHF.

What makes it especially relevant is the current movement market. Miyota 9 series movements are still excellent, but with prices rising and supply getting tighter, the gap between premium Japanese and entry Swiss options is not as wide as it used to be.

The R01 is not a direct ETA 2824 / SW200 drop-in replacement, since it is wider at 28.20 mm, but it is thinner at 4.20 mm. It also allows a larger date aperture, which could help brands avoid the tiny, awkward date windows we often see on affordable watches.

It still has to prove itself in real production watches, serviceability, and long-term reliability. But if Ronda can supply it consistently, this could become a very interesting option for microbrands trying to build more affordable Swiss Made watches with actual technical substance.

I noticed there are not many proper reviews of the Timex Expedition TW4B30100, so I decided to write up a proper one.

It is a pretty simple watch on paper: 40mm case, cream field-style dial, quartz movement, date window, mineral crystal, green rubber strap, 50m water resistance, and Indiglo. Mine usually sits in that under-$50–60 range, so I went in with pretty realistic expectations.

After a few months, the main thing that stands out is how easy it is to live with. It is very light on wrist, the dial is extremely legible, and Indiglo is genuinely useful in the dark. The stock strap is okay for the price, but I think this watch makes much more sense on a NATO. With the cream dial and 20mm lug width, it takes different straps really well.

There are obvious compromises. The case is brass rather than stainless steel, the hand lume is weak, the mineral crystal is expected at the price, and the seconds hand on mine does not hit the markers perfectly. The ticking is there too, but I only really notice it in a completely silent room.

Still, I think it works because it does not pretend to be more than it is. It is not a “giant killer” or a replacement for a more serious field watch. It is just a cheap, light, practical Timex Expedition with a good dial and a useful backlight.

Curious if anyone else here has tried this reference, or if most people just go straight for other Expedition models.

This watch is many things, and one of them is definitely a “strap monster.”

I honestly like the OEM bracelet. It’s not as bad as people say, and it has its own charm. But this strap took the watch to a whole other level.

And no, this isn’t one of those wildly overpriced straps. Nothing wrong with spending more on a strap, but knowing where to get the best value matters. This one is from AliExpress, retails for less than $20, and gives you the same quality as straps people pay $70+ for.

Long story short, this setup completely won me over. I’m in love with how it looks 😍

Orient basically made the update nobody asked for but everybody will love.

They just updated the AC0Q Diver, and the move is pretty simple: same compact case, much better dial.

The new Orient AC0Q Diver II keeps the 39.9mm stainless steel case, 200m water resistance, sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, steel 120-click bezel and F6722 automatic movement. The real change is that it now gets the Kamasu-style dial layout, with the arrow hour hand, sword minute hand, applied markers and a cleaner, more recognizable look.

That matters because the old AC0Q had good proportions but felt a bit visually forgettable. The Kamasu had the stronger dial, but not everyone wants the larger feel. This feels like Orient combining the best parts of both.

Timex has added a new Atelier Chronograph Quartz M1q to the Atelier line, following the GMT24 M1a and Marine M1a.

This is probably the more relevant Atelier release for most buyers, since the titanium automatic is around €2,000, while this quartz chronograph comes in at €700 on rubber and €800 on bracelet.

Specs include a 40mm stainless steel case, 12.7mm thickness, 48.11mm lug-to-lug, sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance, Swiss-made quartz chronograph movement, and date at 6.

Seiko handled these beautifully.

On paper, they are simple: same 41mm case, same 4R36 automatic, same Hardlex crystal, same 10 bar water resistance, same day-date setup. But the compass bezel gives the whole release a bit more personality, and that makes a difference.

The bracelet models are probably the easiest ones to wear every day. The green and brown strap versions feel a little more relaxed and outdoorsy. Same watch, different mood.

They are not trying to be hardcore field watches, and honestly I do not think they need to be. They just feel like solid Seiko 5 Sports models with a bit more character than usual.

Which version would you pick?

The affordable GMT space has changed quite a bit over the past few years.

What used to be a compromise-heavy category now offers a surprisingly wide range of options. True GMT movements like the Miyota 9075 are showing up well below $1,000, NH34 models have become more refined and accessible, and quartz GMTs continue to offer a practical alternative that often gets overlooked.

What’s more interesting is the variety in approach. Some watches lean into classic tool-watch design, others focus on proportions and wearability, while a few take a more design-led direction. It no longer feels like a one-size-fits-all category.

The Erebus Ascent and Hult Aquatique stand out as some of the most accessible true GMTs right now, while the Baltany and Timex show how practical this complication can be at lower price points.

There are obviously a lot more GMTs out there, but the goal here was to narrow it down to a small, intentional selection based on how these watches actually perform and wear, not just specs.

Do you already own any GMT piece?

At some point it needs to be said clearly. A lot of people are overpaying for aftermarket watch straps.

The price differences in this space can be huge, but when you actually compare products side by side, the gap in quality often does not match the gap in cost. A big part of what you are paying for is branding, packaging, and positioning, not necessarily a dramatically better product. That ends up in brands selling their straps at massive markups, between 5 to 10 times what they likely cost to produce.

Nothing wrong with that, to each their own. But I want to show people you do not need to spend $80 on a strap to get something that feels high quality.

So I decided to test that for myself and picked up a budget option from AliExpress.

After wearing it for a while, I was genuinely surprised. It is basically perfect, it feels solid, looks good on the wrist, and does exactly what you would expect. More importantly, it makes you question how much extra value you are really getting when you spend a lot more.

Well, I’m certainly not saying anything new to many of you, but wow. This watch is champagne for lemonade money. I can’t wrap my head around this piece costing just $120.

Citizen just released a new Eco-Drive chronograph trio (CA4764-57A / 57E / CA4766-51L) and it feels like a very deliberate play for the practical end of the market: a compact, modern chrono you can actually wear as a default.

The basics are quietly strong: 39.6mm case, 11.7mm thick, sapphire with AR, 100m water resistance, Eco-Drive B620 rated ±15 sec/month with about 9 months reserve, plus 1/5 sec chrono (60-min total), date, and 24h. Even the dial is unusually clean for this segment, including the small choice to skip the classic “Eco-Drive” text.

It naturally raises the Seiko question. The Prospex Speedtimer has become a go-to reference point for modern Japanese chronographs, but it also tends to sit in a higher price bracket. These new Citizens, listed in Japan at ¥49,500 (roughly $300), can come in at well under half of what a Speedtimer often costs at retail depending on the market.
