NYC Background acting - Scam
I have done a few sessions of BG in NYC, and I enjoy it. I meet interesting people, there's free food, and it's interesting to see the complex resource management. There is a lot of mundane waiting, and sometimes you get treated like shit. I am non-union, and so I am the very bottom, but no complaints.
Two nights ago, a BG friend referred me to this casting assistant guy. We chatted briefly, the approximate day, time and location of the shoot. The BG friend then thought it was a little scammy, as she has not worked with them before, and bc of the last minute logistic changes in Queens. Since I am a guy, I am less paranoid. Plus I have 0 value being trafficked.
The night before, I log into the Google form setup, took down the pertinent pickup and drop off info, costume, and confirmed my name on the list. I also received a text message to long onto a payroll portal, where I provided a lot of PI data. And then I had to take this hour long sexual harassment training, which actually gave me more confidence that it was NOT a scam, although I was never really paranoid about it.
I got to the van pickup point early, and met two other BG's. The van never showed up, the casting person never returned my text. I just want to report the scam with the police. Share my experience with the others in the industry to protect them. Is there anything I should do? Thanks for reading, and again, my experiences have been very positive - up until this one.
