Hi all, I am trying to redo my resume, and I was seeking some advice on the professional summary. I am looking for a career as a biologist/scientific journalist, and I am unsure what all I should include or how long the summary should be. Any advice is appreciated!

I need help with my resume

Hi all, I've posted here before, and I've gotten no feedback. I'm going to keep trying.

I'm a recent graduate (BS), and I've been applying to jobs for over a year and have only gotten 2 interviews. I have no idea if it's the job market or my resume, but if it is something I can fix, I want to.

I'm looking for advice on how I should display my education on my resume (I have a minor as well, and honor societies, dean's list, stuff like that)

But I also don't know how I should be relaying my work experience. I'm also a published author. I have this all on my resume, but it's clearly not working.

My job interests range from anything in marine/wilderness biology to editing/publishing/freelance writing. I have years of experience in both of these fields.

Does anyone have advice on what I'm doing wrong? If need be, I can post my resume.

Looking for feedback on my resume — especially for marine biology/scientific writing roles

Hi everyone! I’m hoping to get some constructive feedback on my resume. I’ve been applying to jobs recently but haven’t had much luck getting interviews, so I’m wondering if there’s something about my resume that could be holding me back.

I’m primarily interested in marine biology, scientific writing/communication, editing, and related remote positions, so I’d especially appreciate feedback from people who have experience hiring in those fields.

I’ve redacted my personal information for privacy, but the education, experience, skills, and other relevant information are unchanged.

I’d love feedback on things like:

  • Overall formatting and readability
  • Whether the resume looks professional
  • How well my experience is presented
  • Whether my skills are relevant/clear
  • Anything that seems unnecessary or is missing
  • How well it would work with ATS systems
  • Whether it seems appropriately tailored for scientific/marine biology or writing positions
  • Anything that might make a recruiter immediately pass over it

I’m definitely open to honest criticism — I’d rather know what needs improvement than just hear that it looks good!

Thank you in advance to anyone willing to take the time to look it over and give me some advice. I really appreciate it!

Looking for Professional Resume Advice

Hi everyone! I’m a recent Biology graduate with a focus in marine biology, and I’m currently trying to improve my resume before continuing my job search.

I’m primarily interested in marine biology, environmental science, scientific writing, editing, research, and science communication roles, including remote opportunities.

I’ve been applying to positions for a while, but I’m not getting much response, so I’m starting to wonder whether my resume is presenting my experience effectively—or whether I’m formatting/positioning it incorrectly for the types of positions I’m targeting.

I’d really appreciate advice from people who currently work in marine biology, environmental science, scientific writing, publishing, research, or related fields.

A few things I’d especially love feedback on:

  • What resume format works best for these industries?
  • Should I have different resumes for marine biology vs. scientific writing/editing?
  • What skills or experiences should be emphasized for entry-level applicants?
  • How much should I focus on education, research, writing, editing, laboratory/field experience, or publications?
  • Are there common resume mistakes you see from recent graduates?
  • What makes a candidate stand out when they don't have extensive professional experience?
  • Are ATS-friendly resumes important in these fields?
  • If you work in one of these industries, what would make you stop and actually look at a recent graduate's resume?

I’m happy to provide my current resume for critique if that’s allowed/relevant to the subreddit. I’m especially interested in advice from people who have actually hired or reviewed resumes for these types of positions.

Thank you in advance! I’m trying to make sure I’m putting my best foot forward rather than just endlessly submitting applications and hoping something sticks.

Are there actually remote marine biology or scientific writing jobs out there?

Hi everyone!

I'm hoping someone here might have some suggestions.

I recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology with a focus on marine biology. During school, I also gained extensive editing and writing experience, including serving as a managing editor for student publications, interning with a minor publishing company, and publishing my own novel.

I've been searching for remote opportunities because they're the best fit for my current situation. I've looked through LinkedIn, Indeed, and many of the major job boards, but I've had a difficult time finding positions that seem legitimate or are still actively hiring.

I'm especially interested in roles like:

  • Scientific or technical writing
  • Journal or manuscript editing
  • Research communications
  • Environmental or conservation writing
  • Marine biology support roles
  • Science communication
  • Content writing for environmental organizations

If anyone knows of companies, organizations, job boards, or even specific employers that regularly hire for remote positions in these fields, I'd be incredibly grateful.

Even if you don't have a specific job in mind, I'd love to hear where you've had the most success finding legitimate remote opportunities.

Thank you so much!

Freelance editors—what actually helped you find consistent clients?

Hi everyone!

I'm a new freelance editor who's been working hard to build my business. I'm a published author myself, and I genuinely enjoy helping writers strengthen their manuscripts while preserving their unique voice.

I've created profiles on sites like Reedsy and PeoplePerHour, I've been networking on LinkedIn, and I'm starting to share my services in writing communities. While I'm putting in the effort, I'd love to hear from people who have already built a successful editing business.

What actually made the biggest difference for you?

  • Where did your first paying clients come from?
  • Was there a platform that consistently worked?
  • Did referrals become your biggest source of work?
  • If you were starting over today, what would you focus on first?

I'm not looking for shortcuts—I know building trust takes time. I just want to spend my energy on strategies that have actually worked for others.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

My Dystopian Debut

Hi, my name is Emily. I'm a new writer with a degree in marine biology and editing and publishing, trying to navigate what career path I want to pursue.

After years of writing, editing, second-guessing myself, and learning both from professors and my own personal research about publishing, I finally released my first dystopian novel.

Writing this book challenged me more than anything I've ever done. There were countless rewrites, moments where I cried on the couch alone thinking I couldn't do this, and a lot of learning along the way. Seeing it become a real book has been incredibly rewarding.

The story follows a FMC, and her ability to survive in a military career she was thrown into.

I'm already working on the rest of the series, and I'm excited to keep expanding the world later this month.

If you enjoy classic 2010s dystopian fiction, survival stories, political intrigue, or character-driven side adventures, I'd be honored if you checked it out. I'd also love to hear what fellow readers and writers think, whether that's about the publishing journey or the story itself.

Thanks for letting me share something I've poured so much of myself into.

I did it! 🥳

After years of editing, rearranging the story, college, toxic relationships, and, of course, some self-growth, I finally finished the first book in my first series. I took the self-publishing route, and I am very proud of myself for this, because it might not reach the dollar sales others dream of, but I kept the rights to my work, and I designed everything right down to the cover, and I'm proud of that.
