Is it possible to "believe nothing?"

I cannot defend this epistemological claim.

Paradoxically that itself is a claim that I may be asked to defend.

But asking the question, "is it possible to believe nothing?" is quite an epistemological exercise.

Because we're not just asking, is it possible to believe in the absence of belief, but it necessarily assumes that the absence of a belief is somehow attainable, whether or not one believes in it.

Which is not a state one can talk about anymore in abstract terms, as it must be demonstrated in practice by the subjective experiencer, who could not then communicate it.

And that is a struggle. I find it more interesting to contemplate how one would chose to believe less, and why.

Why would someone choose to believe less? To be less convicted?

Do we believe the person who says we should or could believe less? How confident are we they are right, and we also could achieve that state?

Do we believe that believing less is good for us? That it is somehow useful? Because those are, themselves, beliefs, are they not? At the minimum they're expectations. They assume some kind of predictive metric by which one would have achieved the state of believing less, as opposed to believing more or the same amount. It requires evidence one could interpret, and, therefore, believe more or less, is accurate.

To believe nothing would assume, functionally, zero expectations. No anticipation. And thus, it's kind of inherently pointless, meaningless, and in a very real way, useless.

Can one accept being useless against the incredible pressure to make it useful? And if one is so wrapped up in useful beliefs they hold as self evident and ultimately very important, why would they ever willingly drop them? Are we all stuck with that situation, right now, and are just unaware of it?

Starting Area for our Colony-Sim/RPG Hybrid Isometric 2D game.

The starting area (Biros Pillar) on Tutorial Isthmus.

The game drops you off here from the New Game -> 'Ready Room'.

You always start with a new part of characters with some kind of backstory from Earth.

With the environment for context as to how you arrived here and what just happened, you start off on you journey to find a new home, settle a town or join an existing one, and survive.

[Hiring] Seeking 2D/3D Artist to Upgrade Our Main Menu Scene

[Intro]

This is a job for a 2D & 3D Artist, developing art assets for use in Unity as part of our intro & main menu scene.

We've got the basics set up and the scene has a good composition for another artist to join us to begin fleshing out the scene with new 2D & 3D elements. You can see the composition in the gifs above.

This is a paid job, terms & rates negotiable. Must be eligible to work remotely in the US and get paid in USD. You must also be made of flesh, not an AI.

It's essential you be capable of Rendering Landscapes for use in 2D Parallax Art Panels in motion, and/or, be a competent 3D Artist capable of doing Matte Paintings on 3D Plates that can move & receive lighting. Unity experience is a plus.

--

[Task Description]

The scene is of our Fragment, one of many millions. We're an observer, looking out over this detail rich landscape towards the horizon where the "bow" of the plate ends. Beyond the horizon we're looking at the center of this mega-structure, a kind of Dyson Swarm, where a "Dragon" eats the sun each day & night. Another doomed Fragment slams into the mouth of this Dragon and is destroyed. A pulse of light falls from the dark side of the Dragon to reach a pillar; the camera follows.

This represents the player's starting cast of character arriving on this strange world.

A quick little cinematic movement, a taste of the setting, some immersive atmosphere, while the game loads in. 5-6 seconds, then it's over, and the camera remains settled from here on as the player navigates the menus.

We're going for something akin to The Banner Saga in level of detail on these mountains, which do not need to precisely match the art style nor the exact layout above. I did some mockups by bashing photos together to show the intended intro animation and Day/Night cycle so we could then contract this job out. This could be done fully 2D with some alpha masks where we could introduce parallax layers of distant and close up features. OR, we could opt for a 3D landscape mesh and allow the Day/Night cycle to affect lighting directly.

I'm open to your style and suggestions, but I am aiming for big, highly detailed, scifi/fantasy epic imagery.

The only elements we're in love with and don't plan to alter are the bow in the distance (akin to the Halo if it just stops at a distant horizon instead of making a full ring) the pillar which is already an asset in game, and the distant background field of Fragments.

The exact style, we are open to suggestions from various tastes. It should compliment our hand drawn art style we are already using in game, but does not need to match. If you show me a good photobash approach or a World Machine mesh & texture, or a hand drawn comic book style, I'll consider any of these so long as they are professional, high resolution, and consistent.

Do not show me AI stuff. If I see AI it goes right out the window. Human meat only.

We have just a flabbergasting quantity of art in this game already, but it is a 2D isometric colony-sim, lol. We never see the cool sky outside this menu. So this landscape would be great to introduce the player to the setting and repeatedly refer back to. Hand drawn art would be excellent, but 3D with hand drawn textures isn't unreasonable.

There have been discussions about adding characters, either watching this scene or facing the player for more visual hook, but we'll start with building a flexible scene with the established composition and plan to add layers as needed. The character art if it exists could be handled by Allegra, our resident full time artist. We just need time, which why we're hiring.

It will likely also feature predominantly in the game's promotional materials and Steam page.

[Rates & Terms]

Hourly if desired, negotiable starting at ~20$/hr, and we have at least a month from start to delivery, so it's not a rushed job. Set your rates according to your usual large scope project. For security, we only begin providing upfront payments after significant identifiable commitment has been shown. Funding is released for the final piece on delivery, and any after-work, touchups, alterations, would be paid at the same rate. We also have an NDA to sign, but it's totally okay to post your work with permission as soon as permission is granted.

Idea: Player vs Each Other Phase -> Creates Player vs the Board Phase

I'm having a think about a design concept.

Making a mess, and then un-making it.

This is a metaphor for life, politics, ecology, relationships -- competing interests start easy going enough, then almost immediately start to make things complicated. After a while things are said, things are done, which nobody can quite take back on their own, and we've created this complicated knot of mutually exclusive winners and losers.

That's phase 1, a tangled yarn.

Phase 2 is untying the knot.

In phase 1 there may have been a winner or loser at the time, but that's now somewhat secondary to actually winning the game as a group. Each player has a hidden objective only they really knew in phase 1. In Phase 2, that victory condition is revealed, and now we start playing against the board by helping each other complete their victory conditions. The winner who took most last round now has resources they may not want to part with for their own personal victory condition, but they hold all the cards so to speak for the start of Phase 2, which everybody else probably also needs.

Phase 2 is about players struggling against the emergent soup of competitive actions they played in Phase 1, which flipped over have consequence rules for trying to help each other equalize in Phase 2.

Winning the game is untangling the web of consequences caused by Phase 1 before the remaining actions in Phase 2 are exhausted. If the mess was just too messy, the whole table loses (but one loser loses less than the rest, technically the winner.) If they remove all the negative consequences from Phase 1, and fulfill their victory conditions, the whole table wins.

Obviously, balance is the thing. The thing is balance. Nothing is real until it is.

So while this is more of a concept prompt than any kind of design, I'm interested what bubbles up from others when they read about it.

Here he's talk with Brad Lancaster, local horticultural hero and community leader. Remember when FarScape fans sent bras to SyFy (Then Sci-fi Channel) to get their final season movie? What are Stargate fans sending Amazon?

https://fanlore.org/wiki/Save_Farscape

What the frell is a Farscape?

https://www.syfy.com/syfy-wire/how-bras-yes-bras-helped-save-farscape-25-years-ago

Well, 27 years ago its cancellation got some mivonks in a twist and they didn't tolerate that. Besides bras, they also sent fan art, models, and other art.

I've seen a box of replicator blocks and plans for aircraft flying over AmazonMGM. What else are Stargate fans sending to Amazon to get the word out?
