Gravity is broken. We're making a comic about it. Upside Down #3 is now live on Kickstarter! 🌀

The Flip turned Earth's gravity upside down!

If you like your sci-fi somewhere between Saga and Miyazaki, with a little Die Hard thrown in, come check out our weird little world.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1902910114/upside-down-3-a-gravpunk-comic-book?ref=7gqb35

The ceiling is the floor. The sky is trying to kill you. Nobody knows what happened. And people have to figure out how to keep living in this ridiculous new world.

We're making this strange, scrappy comic about sky pirates and flipped physics, but underneath all the weirdness, it's really about people trying to be brave when given a raw deal. It's a story about getting knocked sideways by a changing world, and finding a way to keep moving anyway. Think you can relate?

Come get Flipped. 🌀

Anyone else been checking out these Ignition Press ashcans? I thought Dinner Date was pretty good!

I've been picking up these free Ignition Press ashcans every time I see one at my local shop. So far nothing really stood out but I thought this preview of Dinner Date was awesome.

It's not even really my thing (outside of Buffy, I never cared for vampires). I just thought the writing was clever. Had never heard of Joanne Starer but she's now on my radar!

Anyone else check this out?

PS
After putting this up I also read their ashcan for PRIMA APPARATA (ballerinas in space?) and also enjoyed it. Looks like I'm going to need to buy some Ignition books. Consider the ashcan's job a success!

The book is about the aftermath of "The Flip" and a small cast of characters who are trying to stay alive and stay hopeful.

The ceiling is now the floor.

People can't step outside for fear of falling into the sky.

And everyone is left obsessing over the same questions: How did this happen? Why is it only affecting humans? And is there any way we can go back?

Upside Down takes you on an imaginative journey through a world unlike any you've seen before.

In issue #3...

Airships. Sky pirates. Impossible climbs.

Upside Down - a sci-fi comic where gravity isn't on humanity's side! Read the first issue for FREE on GC today!

It’s been three years since the Flip - the day Earth’s gravity turned upside down for everyone. Floors became ceilings, stepping outside could mean falling into the sky, and the world was forced to rebuild itself underground. Since then people have been asking the same questions: How did this happen? Why does it only affect humans? And is there any way back?

Upside Down is an ongoing black-and-white indie comic set in a strange new world of tethered cities, crowded airships, and lives lived online. Part mystery, part adventure, and part survival story, it’s a Gravpunk journey through a future where every step is dangerous, and every fall goes up.

You can read the first issue for free on GlobalComix (my favourite digital home for indie comics!), while the second issue requires a Gold membership. We're gearing up to launch the Kickstarter for the third issue in the next month or so and are looking to spread word about the book.

Happy 50th Birthday to the Silver Snail!

I stopped by at opening this morning to spend a few bucks, and was delighted to see a line of people already there.

They've got a big sale going on all weekend, so if you're like me and haven't checked in with the Snail in a while, stop by and see if something catches your eye!

Does my indie comic (Image / Western vibes) have a place on Webtoon?

I'm the writer of an indie comic called Upside Down - it's a sci-fi, adventure story in the vein of a Brian K Vaughan Image comic (i.e. Y: The Last Man). I've been trying to build my online readership and have been loving the GlobalComix platform. In doing some digging I learned about Webtoon and went to the site to check it out... and was blown away by the readership numbers. This platform is absolutely massive.

I'm sure your response is, "Get with the times, grandpa, this thing has been around forever," and you're right! I'm sorry I wasn't aware of it sooner. As a non-Manga reader it just wasn't really on my radar, until I started looking more closely at online comics platforms.

I see that the platform is very, very largely focused on manga (I'd guess 98%?), but there are a few non-manga titles on there as well. I'm looking to get an understanding of if my book would be welcomed on the platform. I don't want to be seen as an outsider trying to elbow my way into a site/platform in a way that readers find off-putting or offensive. Then again, maybe I'm overthinking it, maybe the answer is, "Why not? The more the merrier! Who cares what style your book is in!"

Of course there's also the whole issue of adapting my comics to vertical, which, as a traditional comics fan, is something I knee-jerk react against, but I'm willing to entertain the idea if it means it could expose my book to such a massive audience.

I'm not so much interested in monetization on this platform as I am in just growing my online readership. I figure if a bunch of new people check the book out, and if some of them like it, there's a decent chance they go to my site, subscribe to my newsletter, and come on board as future Kickstarter backers. I'm proud of my story and am confident that there are some folks on this platform that would really like it.

I was wondering if anyone reading this considers themselves both a Webtoon expert, and also a big fan of non-manga comics (i.e. Image, IDW, Dark Horse, indie - anything but Big Two superhero comics). If that's you, I'd love to send you a DM to get your thoughts and advice on how to proceed. I'd want to take this seriously so I can present my book in the best light possible and offer it its best chance at success. And I figure the best way to do that is to chat with someone, briefly, so they can point me to some examples of non-manga comics that "are doing it right" on this platform. Please let me know if you'd be willing to help!

Thanks for your time!

My favourite local comic book shop here in Toronto, Canada has been selling brand new DC releases at an amazing discount - typically $2.99, and sometimes $2.50, and that's CAD (so in USD that 2.99 would be 2.20).

I asked them how they can afford to do this and they said the publisher offers a deal where if they order at least 25 copies of a book they get a big discount, and can sell them at that discount. I think this is amazing - it feels like I'm back in the '90s! I've taken a chance on many more books than I would have otherwise. It feels cool walking out with three comics for $10 CAD rather than two, or even just one.

I'm guessing a lot of comic shops take the discount and charge full price anyways, which is fair enough, it's tough being a brick and mortar store out there.

But I'm curious how many other shops offer the discount - any in your area?
