Why do inmates get so many luxuries?

If you ask me, prison inmates should get the basic necessities only. They should be fed prison loaf 3x per day, sleep on the concrete ground with no furnishings in their cells, and be made to work hard labor 8 hours a day 6 days a week. They shouldn't have access to TVs, tablets, weight rooms, and basketball courts. Also, they should only get visits with family for one hour a month with no phone calls.

Prison should be about punishment. It shouldn't be summer camp for adults.

I've become very good at faking a pleasant personality at work

At every job I've had, there have been people who I cannot stand and people who I know cannot stand me. Over the years, I've gotten better at pretending to like coworkers though.

What's helped me is to wear a big fake smile while thinking to myself "focus on the money, fuck the people." I find myself repeating that phrase in my mind on a regular basis when dealing with difficult people in the office.

I've always thought that the worst and most challenging part of working is the people aspect. I've never hated a job. It's always been other people that I've hated.

I can't wait to retire so that I can spend my days with people that I choose.

How often do federal prison inmates go outside?

I was looking at the federal prison in Beaumont in Google Maps, and it looks like the outdoor recreational facilities are really crappy and not well maintained. There are very faded baseball diamonds, tracks that look like concrete was poured in a rounded rectangle, what looks like basketball courts, and maybe some soccer goals. The USP especially looks like it doesn't have much of anything for outdoor rec, just maybe a couple of small basketball courts and that's about it. A lot of the stuff looks dirty and like it could use a fresh coat of paint.

Do the inmates not go outside that much or play sports very often? Are crappy recreational facilities part of the punishment?

Thinking of retiring to a seasonal cabin in WA, MI, or ME

I'm a single guy, and I'm thinking of getting a simple cabin to retire to. It doesn't need to be fancy. A small cabin with solar and a well is fine. Basically, I'd live in it in the summer months and then when it starts getting into winter, I'd close up and leave. I'd spend winters vandwelling in the southern U.S. and/or head abroad to LCOL countries in SE Asia or Latin America.

My main concerns are medical care in the event I have some kind of emergency and also the possibility of coming back home to my cabin in spring and finding that it is vandalized, burned to the ground, or that there are guests inside of it who won't leave.

Any suggestions or experiences you'd like to share?

If Luigi really wanted to make a difference, why didn't he run for political office?

He's bright, has an ivy league education, and he comes from a prominent family. If he really wanted to change the healthcare system, why didn't he try to become a politician and run on the platform of promoting universal healthcare?

Not all liberals support Luigi btw

I know it's a common belief that liberals support Luigi, that he's a Robin Hood figure to them, but I have some VERY liberal family members who believe Luigi belongs in prison. I'm talking people who are almost communist, that's how liberal they are. I've talked about the case with them and they're like "he killed someone, he belongs in prison." So I don't know how well jury nullification will work in New York even though it's a very liberal area.

Are high profile inmates kept separated from gen pop in prison?

For example, people like Diddy, Brian Kohberger, Karmelo Anthony, and Luigi (if he goes to prison), are they kept in solitary or are they treated like any other inmate? If they're in gen pop, wouldn't there be a risk of them being targeted by the other inmates? Also, is it different in state vs. fed?

For the leanFIREd ex-office workers

Do you miss the cubicle shit at all?

The godawful boring work, the beige fabric walls, the obnoxious coworkers, the commute, having to sit in an uncomfortable chair all day, the asshole bosses, the enormous time commitment to work that ultimately doesn't really matter, getting eye strain from staring at a computer screen all day, sleep deprivation from staying up late and dreading the next work day?

Do you miss it at all?

Mid-2000s students, what did you like to eat?

I remember there was a good Indian fast food place in the University Center that served mango chutney. I still remember how that tasted. It was yummy.

Also, I went to the Chinese Star all the time and got their stir fry with rice. It was cheap and oily, but it was oh so good. The portions were big too. Also, I remember there was some kind of pink, sugary bottled drink that I would buy there.

Then there was a place that sold Vietnamese sandwiches near the Rothers bookstore. Those sandwiches were great. I remember the bread was crispy and there was some kind of sauce that I put on top. Also, they had a variety of drinks. I remember getting chrysanthemum tea there.

Those were my favorite foods from when I attended UH.

Luigi's first interview

When do you think Luigi's first interview will be and what will it be like? I wonder if it will be something like SBF's videoconference with Tucker Carlson from jail or if it will be more formal like a sitdown interview for 60 minutes. Obviously, it will probably be after the trial is over, maybe after the appeals too, but I imagine Luigi will want to be heard even if he ends up in the pen for life. Thoughts?

I love when the system we need to do our work is down

It means that I don't have to work until it's fixed. It's play on my phone time until they get the system back up and running. It always pisses me off when I get the e-mail telling me that the problem has been resolved and that we can get back to work.

What does he do all day?

Besides reading his mail, listening to music, talking to his lawyers about his case, and walking around the cell block, does he really do anything else? I'd be bored out of my mind. I can't imagine spending a year and a half in the same building.

Memories of visiting Key West around 2010

I was in my mid-20s and for my first trip, I remember renting a car in Miami and driving down the overseas highway and being amazed at how pretty the water was. Duval Street was kind of wild with drunks, and I also remember there being a number of gay people. I remember staying in a motel, I believe it was a Days Inn. I think it was around $80 per night. I also watched a movie at a small theater. I known the motel is gone, but I'm not sure about the theater. Hemingway's House and the polydactyl cats were interesting. I also visited Ft. Zachary Taylor.

My second trip was a year or two later, and I actually flew to the airport in Key West on Southwest. I remember walking down stairs to get off the plane and walked across the tarmac to the terminal building which was tiny. I think there was a sign that said something like "Welcome to the Conch Republic." I remember tent camping at Bahia Honda State Park. That was fun. I also took the ferry to Ft. Jefferson which was awesome.

Key West seems to have gotten quite a bit more expensive since then, and I've found that it's very hard to reserve campsites at Bahia Honda nowadays. I tried booking a campsite, called customer service, and the guy I talked to kind of laughed and told me that I'd have to book about a year in advance. When I visited before, I don't remember having trouble reserving a campsite.

It's amazing how much it's changed just over the past 15 years. I think it's the most beautiful part of Florida, so I can see why it's gotten to be so popular and expensive.

Has the reputation changed much since the early 2000s?

I remember getting a lot of crap from people about attending "Cougar High" in the early 2000s. It mainly came from family members and friends who acted like UH was for dumb people who couldn't get into better universities. In my case, UH was the only university that I applied to since I wanted to stay at home while going to school.

I've had a great career in the accounting field which has provided me with an upper middle class lifestyle, so I just kind of think back on the comments that I got and laugh.

During my senior year of high school, I told one of my classmates that I was going to UH. He had a sad look on his face and asked "is that the only school that would take you?" Another classmate smirked when I told him I was majoring in accounting and asked "do you really think that's a good business school?" Also, a family friend told me "I didn't even know that UH has an accounting program."

Is UH still seen as a loser school or something similar to a community college, or has its reputation gotten better?

Does HR assign color to Teams emojis based on race?

When I click on the thumbs up emoji, it is yellow. I'm a White guy, but I guess that's close enough. When my Hispanic coworkers use the thumbs up emoji, it is brown though. Is that something that HR sets up in Teams or what?

Is there a solid appeal issue re: evidence for the Luigi Mangione NY state case?

I'm in Texas but obviously this is regarding a NY case.

Okay, I read about a ruling this week for what evidence can be admitted for the Luigi Mangione case in NY state. Some of the stuff in the backpack can be let in like the red notebook and the handgun, but a lot of other things like a passport, wallet, cell phone, and a computer chip won't be admitted.

It seems like if the backpack was deemed to be illegally searched then everything inside of it should be thrown out. I'm not a lawyer, but isn't that fruit of the poisonous tree? Also, I believe the judge's justification for letting in the notebook was because it wasn't actually opened in the McDonald's and the handgun wasn't actually taken out of the backpack until it was taken to the station.

What I don't get is if the notebook was admitted because it was not opened until it was taken to the station, why couldn't the cell phone, passport, computer chip, and wallet be admitted if they were also not opened in the McDonald's?

It just seems inconsistent to me. The justification for some evidence being admitted and other evidence not being admitted from really the same source (the backpack) seems pretty flimsy to me. Is this a solid appeal issue, like something that could result in a new trial down the line?
