On America's 250th Birthday, Celebrate Liberty

https://reason.com/2026/07/03/on-americas-250th-birthday-celebrate-liberty/

Nearly half of Americans don't understand what we're celebrating for America's 250th anniversary, according to a new poll. Clearly, the festivities aren't about the quality of the country's public schools, since this year marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Something else we should be celebrating, though, is this country's continued legacy of individual liberty. Our freedom may be under threat from people who don't appreciate its value both within and outside the country, but it endures with the support—mostly—of Americans themselves.

What Can Be Done to Address this Community Issue?

We have a host of leftwing (even if labeled otherwise) people coming in here and absolutely badgering/demanding you to answer every question they ask in the exact way they want. Often these questions are loaded. Often they don't want long form responses, but 'yes or no' trap questions. The sense of entitlement is strong. I would be nice to have a rule that required non-conservative visitors to maintain some level of etiquette. As it is now, they reject any answer they don't like and drill down with loaded questions, then are obnoxious when you don't play their game. It makes the experience very unpleasant for conservatives/libertarians like myself.

Where to rent a LGR Dehumidifier?

Any places you'd recommend? Home Depot has them but it's not cheap, wondering if anyone has any local suggestions. Thanks

Is this something I can do without special tools?

Bathtub/shower is on the other side. It's been leaking for god knows how long. I've removed some of the drywall and insulation, which is wet. Called a company, they're quoting me around 2k for drying it and rebuild. Source has been identified and mediated (caulking from previous owner failed). Is it worth the 2k to get this done? Would putting some fans and a dehumidifier do the same trick?

Is My White Oak in Trouble?

See the attached photos, it was right after a heavy rain. There is a big dark spot that's been there for a while, but what is actually new is the green color of the bark. If it is in trouble- how can I save it?!

Why are gold prices tanking?

I'm not a short term investor. I understand the fundamentals and especially with US debt the long-term importance of gold. I'm holding, this is a short-term, regionalized thing.

What is the short-term regionalized thing that is happening which is causing gold to decrease (yes, I know it's the iran war, but how is that effecting gold prices?)

Foundation Issue?

This just broke off one day for apparently no reason at all, exposing what I assume to be some rebar in the concrete. In a dry climate. No actions taken yet because I'm not sure what I'm dealing with.

Safe Places to Walk Dogs at Night?

Basically it's hot and my good boys can only get out comfortably in the morning or after the sun goes down. I'd love to find a safe, well-lite place to walk then in the evening, like around 10pm or so. West side would be ideal. Am I day dreaming? Does such a place exist?

Thanks for your help.

This is my first try at making a Saga based deck, so I might be missing some obvious includes. I chose [[Barbara wright]] for the read ahead, which can be useful getting more utility from the sagas doing what I need them to do. [[The Sixth Doctor]] is mostly there for access to more colors, but can also pack a punch late game. The general idea is to get out ramp pieces and enchantment based draw effects early on, then value out powerful Sagas.

Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Charge stacking in the practice of prosecutors adding a host charges, sometimes redundant or overlapping, to a defendants case unless they agree to plea guilty for reduced charges. In practice, this can lead to a disparity of months with a guilty plea vs. decades if convicted by a jury. Given the ability to plea guilty and receive a radically lower sentence, the vast majority of federal cases are resolved through plea bargaining, about 97% of all cases. (https://www.injusticewatch.org/criminal-courts/2021/disappearing-jury-trials-study/)

This presents a few problems. 1) There is a constitutional right to a trial by jury. 2) The practice of charge stacking means taking a chance with a jury comes with a price- that price being many more years in prison. 3) Hence the rational choice for people, whether innocent or guilty, is to plea guilty. 4) This undermines trial by jury as reflected in the data.

There have not been strictions placed on charge stacking. In  Bordenkircher v. Hayes it was declared legal that prosecutors offer a defendant a 5 year plea deal for forging an 88 dollar check- or face 10 years to life if risking a jury.

How can charge stacking be reformed? Are prosecutors given too much leeway in determining what charges to be bring? Does this process as practiced today constitute a violation of the 7th Amendment?

Due to a roof drainage problem that I've identify and am fixing, an area of 2' by 4' of siding (about four pieces) are extremely soft an 'mushy' from water damage. A mushroom was growing out of the bottom of one.

Is this something I can fix on my own as a novice, or does it require more extensive expertise to assess damage behind the wooden siding? My plan was essentially to remove the damaged siding, spray bleach to kill the mold and allow it to dry, then paint/apply new siding. This is a reasonable plan? And are there significant risks delaying treatment? (building up the old bank account)
