LCS paying 92% of spot for eagles and buffalos. Is that normal?

I just found a newer shop near me that I would loosely define as an LCS, meaning they buy and sell gold so inside I saw a lot of jewelry items and a few coins like a 1927 double eagle and a 1980
Krugerrand. They also had a some silver eagles and few dozen silver rounds for sale.

I asked the guy how much they pay right now for 1oz gold eagles and buffalos. His answer of 92% seemed low to me. I was wondering if this is what others are experiencing from LCSs.

A big thank you to this group

So I’ve been lurking in this group for the last few months just to learn about gold. Y’all are a really interesting bunch of people and I’ve learned a lot. Anyway I’ve been seeing people posting pictures of their stacks and after seeing gold eagles about 50 times it suddenly dawned on me. My grandpa used to send my brother and I coin proof sets every year at Christmas. They were just a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, etc. from that year. I never thought much of it but I suddenly remembered a couple of years we also got some coins in a blue display box and I could’ve sworn that the emblem looked just like the woman on a gold eagle. I remembered they were about the size of a quarter so I thought they might be 1/4 oz eagles. Sure enough I went up to my parents today and pulled the old box of coins I had kept there in storage and this whole time there’s been an oz of gold in this old box.

My brother didn’t believe it because he thought that would be way too much to spend on Christmas gifts but I told him in 2000 and 2002 when these coins were minted gold was 280-300 an oz, so it really wasn’t that much to send a gift that was like 60 bucks. Anyway I just wanted to thank this group for all your posts because if it hadn’t been for y’all I would’ve had no idea I had these for the last 25 years. I have no intention of selling them, in fact I look at it like I got a Time Machine and a chance to buy gold 25 years ago. But what do I do? Just keep stacking over time? Wait till the market goes up and sell? Use them as an emergency fund?

Updated Stack

hello -

I shared a post a few days ago showing a family heirloom that I now am caring for and securing, the 1840 $5 liberty. Today I picked up this tiny maple for fun and this is the first time I’ve looked at over an ounce of gold that I’d consider part of ”my“ stack.

crazy to look at. never thought I’d own gold at all.

next I want to add either another maple, a Britannia, a philharmonic, or an Indian head.

The current state of my stack as of July

Added a 1990 1.55 gram Gold Panda and a 1/10 ounce American Gold Eagle to the stack. Sure the price of gold fell but, in the end all that matters to me is I have gold and it’s all mine.

Mint builder has extremely cheap 1g secondary market gold

Like 6g for $749 is a stupid deal. It’s below melt but it let my order through. I’d recommend everyone and their mom go buy out their entire inventory.

Quick question on pre 33 gold

I have a pre 33 $5 half eagle graded at MS-64, is this a coin that in this condition and slabbed would sell for above melt value? I’m speaking specifically if I was to sell this to a LCS/dealer would they pay above melt? Or would they treat it like a AGE and pay slightly under melt ?? Curious if anyone has had experienced selling slabbed coins

Which should I choose?

Totals are approx bc I’m not gonna sweat it over a couple bucks.

2 x 1g random gold bars on APMEX at spot ($134) + 23 in taxes and 4 for shipping with signature

Pay less per bar but more money in taxes for random bars

Total approx $300

Or

2 x 1g Valcambi bars tax free for $145 each on r/pmsforsale + $6 tacking

More per bar but no taxes and slightly riskier shipping

Total approx $300

What’s the better buy here?

My Inheritance

Probably 85% are 14KT gold chains, bracelets, and earrings. There is some beautiful jewelry though, some of which I am keeping and some selling. All the gold is being sold so I can retire. Thanks Mom.
In that first pic, all the packets on the right are the gold chains. After figuring out melt value, it’s about $40,000 in melt value, jewelry another $20,000.

Balancing long term + worst case

A little background - I am the daughter of an immigrant born in a German refugee camp during WWII. My family fled Latvia on a few hours notice leaving behind almost all possessions and then coming to the U.S. with nothing.

My Grandmother often told me to make sure I always had gold jewelry and gold coins to prepare for the worst when paper currency means nothing. There were cases in their 5 years at the camp that they only had food because they could go to nearby towns and trade gold for food.

So this is my family story and it does frame how I think about things. I have gold and silver but I am not sure how to balance this because obviously having 1 ounces of gold in a coin or bar is way too much if things really got ugly as far as bartering goes. Silver is also heavy even though easier for smaller amounts of trading. I wondered if anyone else has thought about this and has a strategy?

Elemental Refinery

Do they still not buy scrap from the general public? Anyone have a preferred buyer in the Seattle area? I’ll probably ship to Midwest Refineries if not.

I’m 29 with no family inheritance. Am I doomed?

Everyone has their own set of ideas about saving, but I’m just starting with 7G of 24karat I’m proud of my progress, but when I see how much gold and savings people here have I can’t help but wonder if I’ll ever achieve financial freedom in my short life
