Digital Key 2.0 Premium Question

I’m looking to buy a 2026 Tucson (gas) SEL Premium and the one feature I absolutely need for a new car is a digital wallet-based key. Rather than simply rely on the website, I was hoping to get firsthand confirmation from real-life owners: does the 2026 Tucson (gas) SEL Premium support a digital key in Apple Wallet?

Also, under the key in Wallet, what additional functionality appears for the SEL Premium? If that trim level supports hands-free lift gate, does anyone have confirmation that that same feature appears under the key in Wallet?

North Carolina Aims To Bring IDs To Wallet In Early 2027

NCDOT has launched a new landing page announcing the early development of a mobile ID. Under the brief FAQ section they note that initial launch will be limited to a standalone NC wallet app, with Apple, Google, and Samsung Wallet support expected in early 2027.

This may seem like wishful thinking—to go from early development to launch in 8-9 months—but it’s worth noting that Illinois went from legislative approval in January 2025 to a statewide launch in late November that same year.

It would seem that the states (and their-party verification providers, such as IDEMIA) as learning how to accelerate launch as they gain more experience.

Open AMBER Alert In Maps

Is this new? I don’t think I ever realized that if you tap on AMBER alert notifications it’ll open in Maps and show the area under alert.

iOS 27 Adds “Discover” Option

Whether it’s a server-side feature or specific to iOS 27 DB3, there’s a new Discover option under Wallet’s (•••) menu. It lists all the card, key, ticket, and ID types you can store in Wallet. I have to assume this is an effort to better expose customers to the types of things they can add to Wallet, like IDs and keys.

iOS 27 Adds Lock Screen Suggestions For IDs In Wallet

Interestingly, despite my having both my Maryland driver’s license and my Digital ID in Wallet, the suggestion only appeared for the license. I assume this suggestion was powered by a combination of factors, including stored flight info, boarding passes in Wallet, and the fact that I’m currently at DCA.

Apple Card Recurring Charges On iOS 27

Here’s the Recurring charge feature for Apple Card on iOS 27. It would seem to use on-device intelligence to find charges made for the same (or nearly-same) amount, made to the same merchant, on nearly the same day every month (and maybe quarterly, bi-weekly, etc?).

I’ll have to see if it’s smart enough to detect charges that are more irregular, like once a quarter or every two months, etc.

How’s The Davek Mini and Traveler Umbrella?

I’m looking to buy a high quality travel umbrella that’s small, compact, and built to last. At the moment, I need it primary for trips into NYC or Washington, DC, as I’m often walking between the subway/metro and my destination(s). I’m looking at the Davek Mini and Traveler given their compact size. I hate carry stuff, and so if I’m going to travel with an umbrella in my backpack/carry on, I want it to be compact and durable.

iOS 27 Digital ID Interface Updates

From 9to5mac’s YouTube video on the feature, there are some notable UI changes for Digital ID (and presumably all IDs). It also seems that you can now choose to review the requested information before authentication, or opt to automatically share it after authentication.

Web Provisioning Of Access Badges

Here’s what the web interface for adding an employee badge to Wallet looks like. When employee badge in Wallet first launched, the only way to add a badge to Wallet was through a partner app. Now, badges can be provisioned via the web, with invites sent via email, text, or, I believe, logging into an employee portal.

WWDC Predictions

As we fast approach WWDC on Monday, I’m curious to see what the community is looking forward to and expecting to see as it relates to Wallet and Apple Pay. Personally, I’d expect to see the following:

In the keynote:

Native User-Generated Passes
Based on reporting from Mark Gurman, it looks like we’ll be able to generate passes in Wallet for physical membership, rewards, and gift cards, as well as event tickets and registrations. I’d bet good money that this feature is labeled as “Powered by Apple Intelligence.”

Split Bills and Checks with Apple Cash
Again from Gurman, it seems we’ll be able to snap a photo of a receipt or bill, split it or assign items to individuals, and request/pay them via Apple Cash.

Digital ID Expands to More Regions
Just as Google’s ID Pass did, I expect we’ll see the passport-verified Digital IDs expand to at least one more region, likely the UK. Google’s ID Pass just expanded to Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil, so these are possibilities as well.

In the sessions:

Digital ID Acceptance Expands
I expect acceptance of Digital ID to expand beyond TSA. Currently, I don’t believe it’s accepted for use with Verify with Wallet (online/in-app) or the ID Verifier API (for in-person presentation to another iPhone).

Expanded New Pass Design
With iOS 18, event tickets got a new, richer, and more integrated pass design (Event Guide, Find My, Weather, Maps). With iOS 26, airline boarding passes got a new design with expanded integrations (Find My, Flight Tracking, Maps). I wouldn’t be too surprised if an updated pass design comes to a new category.

Turo, Maryland MVA Support Verify with Wallet on the Web

In a WWDC press release from June of 2025, under the section about Digital ID, Apple briefly announced Verify with Wallet on the Web, saying the first sites to support it would be Chime, Turo, Uber Eats, and U.S. Bank, as well as the Arizona MVD, Georgia DDS, and Maryland MVA.

Well, it looks like the Maryland MVA and Turo both launched support at some point. That said, the need to verify your identity or account is often a one-off experience. For accounts of mine that need verification (ie, MVA, Turo) the option appears. For accounts like Uber Eats and Chime, since my account is already verified, the option doesn’t appear.

Car Key in Apple Wallet

Does anyone have experience with their digital car key in Apple Wallet? What’s been your experience so far? The availability of this feature will be a major factor in my decision whether or not to get a Tucson as my next car.

Student ID For Online Verification Mockup

I threw together a mockup of what a future UI may look like for using other credential types in Wallet for online verification (college student login, employee portal login, etc). This is based on the current in-app/online consent sheet when using an ID in Wallet.

Digital Credentials API Opens Up Possibilities

In reading up on the Digital Credentials API, which the ‘26 OS’ added support for, it looks like it can be used not just for government-issued credentials, but also business- or organization-issued credentials.

One seemingly glaring omission from the feature set of a student ID in Wallet has been that its use is limited strictly to in-person presentment via NFC. I’ve long wondered why a student ID in Wallet could not be used to log into a college’s intranet or even to verify student status for, say, a student discount. It seems like the Digital Credentials API may be laying the foundation for this.

Imagine signing up for a Spotify student plan and verifying your student status much like making an Apple Pay purchase online: click verify, select your student ID in Wallet, double-click to confirm. The same may even be possible for renewing your driver’s license. I think we’re just seeing the very beginning of that this API makes possible.

A Quick, Definitive Answer About The Midea U Shaped Window AC Matter/HomeKit Integration

I had a very hard time finding any decent/satisfying answers about this, so I figured that now that I have hands-on experience myself, I'd add it here.

The Midea U Shaped Window Air Conditioner does support Matter and Apple Home (though some older hardware may not; definitely make sure the box/website says Matt/HomeKit). That said, the Matter/Home support is limited to turning the AC on or off (Off or Cool), and setting the temperature. No other features are exposed to Matter or Apple Home (fan speed, "quick cool," oscillating, etc).

Overall, I'd say that if you're simply looking to be able to turn your AC on before you get home or set an automation so that when the house gets warm, the AC kicks on, it'll get the job done just fine (you'd need a temperature sensor for such an automation–the Midea does not have a built-in temp sensor like some thermostats do).

Car Key Remote Controls

Does anyone have experience with using remote controls in Wallet? A friend shared their Genesis key with me so that I could play with it, and I’m wondering about the following:

  1. Do some vehicles support non-proximity, server-based remote controls (that work even if you’re miles away)

  2. Do some automakers hid proximity controls behind a subscription (but let you use the Wallet key for free)
