Student ID For Online Verification Mockup

I threw together a mockup of what a future UI may look like for using other credential types in Wallet for online verification (college student login, employee portal login, etc). This is based on the current in-app/online consent sheet when using an ID in Wallet.

Digital Credentials API Opens Up Possibilities

In reading up on the Digital Credentials API, which the ‘26 OS’ added support for, it looks like it can be used not just for government-issued credentials, but also business- or organization-issued credentials.

One seemingly glaring omission from the feature set of a student ID in Wallet has been that its use is limited strictly to in-person presentment via NFC. I’ve long wondered why a student ID in Wallet could not be used to log into a college’s intranet or even to verify student status for, say, a student discount. It seems like the Digital Credentials API may be laying the foundation for this.

Imagine signing up for a Spotify student plan and verifying your student status much like making an Apple Pay purchase online: click verify, select your student ID in Wallet, double-click to confirm. The same may even be possible for renewing your driver’s license. I think we’re just seeing the very beginning of that this API makes possible.

A Quick, Definitive Answer About The Midea U Shaped Window AC Matter/HomeKit Integration

I had a very hard time finding any decent/satisfying answers about this, so I figured that now that I have hands-on experience myself, I'd add it here.

The Midea U Shaped Window Air Conditioner does support Matter and Apple Home (though some older hardware may not; definitely make sure the box/website says Matt/HomeKit). That said, the Matter/Home support is limited to turning the AC on or off (Off or Cool), and setting the temperature. No other features are exposed to Matter or Apple Home (fan speed, "quick cool," oscillating, etc).

Overall, I'd say that if you're simply looking to be able to turn your AC on before you get home or set an automation so that when the house gets warm, the AC kicks on, it'll get the job done just fine (you'd need a temperature sensor for such an automation–the Midea does not have a built-in temp sensor like some thermostats do).

Car Key Remote Controls

Does anyone have experience with using remote controls in Wallet? A friend shared their Genesis key with me so that I could play with it, and I’m wondering about the following:

  1. Do some vehicles support non-proximity, server-based remote controls (that work even if you’re miles away)

  2. Do some automakers hid proximity controls behind a subscription (but let you use the Wallet key for free)

Recent updates to the Boston MBTA website seem to confirm that the upcoming digital Charlie Card will be available natively in Wallet, as well as via an upcoming Charlie app.

This seems to put it in line with WMATA’s SmarTrip card, which can be added to Wallet either directly from Wallet, by transferring a physical card to Wallet, or, by purchasing one in the app and then provisioning it to Wallet.
