If you are moving to a new school…

…for the love of all that’s holy, contact the band director in JUNE! Every single year some new student shows up on the first day of school. Guess what? You’re not in the drill and you’re 6 weeks behind everyone else learning the music. The front ensemble is not the dumping ground for everyone that didn’t bother to prepare.

Has anyone done an installation at a high school football stadium?

The school where I’m the band director got a quote for a new system at $40k. I told the athletic boosters that sounds completely insane to me. I’m not sure what’s included, but they are getting an itemized list I plan to look at. Is that reasonable, or are they getting taken advantage of?

EDIT: Thanks for all the replies and for setting me straight. When I think about how the band has to watch every dollar and operate on a shoestring budget, spending $40k all at once on a system that gets used a dozen times a year is kind of infuriating, but if that’s what something like this costs, then they will just have to deal with it. I’m still going to look at the itemized quote to make sure they aren’t trying to include anything not absolutely necessary, and make sure they get another quote from a competitor.

How will shortening my wheel base feel?

I am going from an old 80s plastic plate to a nice Roll Line aluminum (Blaster). My current wheel base is 175mm. Roll Line suggests 160mm for my boot size, but they also have a 170 that will work with my boot. How will the feel of my skates change by shortening the wheel base? I’m a bit older and I don’t really want to get used to a completely new feel and all the joint aches that go along with that.

Questions about the resolution in The Griffin Incident

2 questions that I couldn’t figure out…

Was their shuttle actually destroyed, or was that a hallucination? If it was, how?

Was Rose Harper actually alive and on the ship? They suggested that La’an hallucinated her, but the others saw her. She also appeared in the window at the very end, suggesting she was alive.

Skating road trips

This past weekend I met a 16 year old and his father that were on a 2 week skating trip. They started in Springfield, Illinois and were headed to NYC. They planned to hit 12 rinks during a 14 day round trip. That sounds so amazingly fun I had to share. Has anyone else taken a trip like this? I’m planning a few overnight trips in Ohio and Indiana, but I don’t think my legs would hold up to skating more than twice in three days.

My small kit for a reggae/pop/lake band

We play 80s/90s pop, reggae, and some Buffet style feel good tunes around a lake community in the spring and summer. The kit is a 20x8 self assembled bass drum, 14x10 converted Ludwig concert tom, 13” LP City Series timbale, and 14” Yamaha Tour Custom snare. Saluda cymbals are 14” hats, 17” jungle crash, 16” crash, and 19” crash/ride. I just spray painted the bass drum and floor tom flat black and glued fabric to the front bass drum head.

How do I adjust this Ludwig hihat stand?

The school I teach has this Ludwig hihat stand and the tension is way too high. I have tried everything I can think of to adjust it. This plastic piece doesn’t lift up and the 2 rods sticking out don’t move. Does anyone else have this stand and know how to adjust it?

What to do with 4 bearings that are the wrong size and 12 that are the right size?

I ordered a set of Bont Pro bearings in 7mm. When they arrived, there were 12 correct ones and 4 that were 8mm. Bont then sent me an entire new set (good on them) and didn’t want me to return anything. Now I have 4 8mm bearings I can’t use and 12 7mm ones that fit, but aren’t a complete set. What would you all do? Can you buy half sets of these anywhere? I could just keep them for replacements, but that seems wasteful. I doubt anyone would trade just 4 bearings. They aren’t very expensive, but I don’t like not using them if there’s anything I’m not thinking of.

How much would LeBron have signed for in 2014 if there were no salary cap, max contracts, or luxury tax?

Prime LeBron signed with the Cavs for $21.1 million per year with the cap. If it was a complete free for all with no cap, luxury tax, or max I wonder how much he could have convinced an owner to give him per year. $40 million per for 5 years maybe?$50m per for 3 years?

Muffling new bass drums

I have new drums for the first time in a decade. What’s everyone using to muffle new stock Pearl heads? I have 16/18/20/22. We can’t afford the Evans heads with felt pads that I have been using.

Help with riding on the toe wheels…truck tension.

Those of you that can ride on your front wheels…is your truck really right? I’m okay on my heels, but when I try to ride on my toes at anything other than a slow speed, I get a lot of wobble. I tried tightening my front trucks a half turn and that didn’t help, but now my regular turning feels sluggish. I could probably get used to it if that’s my issue. Is there something else I’m missing? Any tips are welcome.

I’m on indoor wood floors with speed boots, old Omega plates, and derby sized wheels. Thanks!

Plate ID help

I got these in the late 80s. Someone told me recently that they are Laser plates, and that sounds familiar, but I can’t find any matching pictures online. Please help!

When would I use tall, narrow wheels?

I’m back into skating at 51 after only a few sessions since I was a teenager. Since I actually have some money to spend this time around, I have been building a small wheel collection. So far I for speed wheels I have Bont Ultraglides (63mm x 44mm), for derby sized I have Bont Evolve (59mm x 38mm) which are also a bit softer for a slippery rink I go to, and for artistic size I have Roller Bones Team (57mm x 30mm). I have a good handle on how they all feel and when to use them. I also see there are some 62mm x 30mm Roller Bones. How could I expect those to feel different from the wide speed wheels? That seems really narrow.

I’m indoors only on wood floors. I go most for exercise, but I still can shuffle/jam well enough and turn on the speed for short bursts.

Softer 57mm wheel…suggestion?

I went to a fun rink today that was a bit small. My 59mm 92a wheels felt pretty smooth. When I wanted to try my smaller and harder 57mm 98a set, I suddenly felt all the bumps in the floor. Later I was looking to buy a softer 57mm set somewhere between 90-93a, but couldn’t find anything that soft besides some specialized competition wheels from Roll-Line. Anyone have a suggestion?

My brother was charged $68,000 for wrist surgery.

My brother fell and broke his wrist. He is not insured. He had to pay the surgeon $1300 before the surgery. He went to a different hospital ER initially and they settled for $600 total on a $6000 bill. The doctor insisted the surgery happen at this specific hospital. After talking to the financial assistance people at the hospital, they sent this bill for 100% of the initial amount charged. He makes about $35k per year.

Glow up of these nearly 40 year old boots and plates.

I recently realized I could use skating as exercise in addition to daily walking, so I dug my old late ‘80s powder blue Labeda boots out of the closet and went out. After I determined I could still actually skate well, I wanted new wheels and bearings. I got these Bont Ultraglides and some Bones Swiss bearings along with new laces. The last time I got wheels I was 14 and had to beg my parents for money, so it was nice to splurge a bit. Pictured also are the old Wicked Lips wheels I had, which I have now found out are still pretty valuable. Huge props to the kid that spent a half hour with me at the rink trying to wrestle the bearings into these aluminum hubs, which was extremely difficult.

Heavy 10” splash recommendation.

I am using 2 splashes for a hihat on a marching snare for the school where I teach. They sound pretty good so far, but a heavy bottom would improve the sound I think. Does anyone have a suggestion for a thicker 10” splash?
