Mav the adventure whippet

My guy runs and hikes with me but he just finished his first backpacking trip. He loved every minute of it. He did try to stay in the sleeping bag way after us in the morning and took a dirt nap whenever we stopped for lunch but he did great.

Your recovery timeline after 100

Finished my 2nd Tahoe in July. I get crazy energy during and after these races and I usually feel high for a week after so it’s really hard to rest so I do a walk or hike every day. I did that for a week to keep myself and my dog sane then last week I ran short a few times. I tried to do 10 miles with my friends today and I just felt like I was 80 years old. So clearly I’m still tired but want to be out there. Running feel so important to my mental health as well so it’s tough to take a lot of time off. Curious what others do.

Weather / jacket considerations

I am an experienced backpacker but only recently a dog owner again after many years. It’s only going to be 50 where we are going but there is a chance of rain. I have a very short coat whippet so I was gonna bring him a winter jacket for camp/sleeping and now maybe a rain jacket. Plus dog food. My pack just got a whole lot heavier. Do you guys always bring both jackets for your dog?

I’ve created a monster

So I posted on here last year that my dog didn’t like any of the kibbles I tried looking for help. A few of you basically said my dog was conning me and I didn’t listen but now I see it’s true 😵.

We started on Purina pro plan and when he didn’t wanna eat that anymore, we started switching to all these different foods. First, I was making a bunch of meal toppers, and then we tried to switch to Royal Canin. And then we went to fresh food and then we went to dehydrated food… all of it, resulting in the same problem, he doesn’t want his dinner and he’s barking at the closet where the treats are. Jokes on me. I have created a monster, who is smart enough to know if he doesn’t eat his food I’ll feel sorry for him and give him sardines or treats. Meanwhile, he isn’t really getting a balanced diet. How do I get out of this situation? Right now we have a bunch of Ollie fresh food in the freezer that he is mildly interested in some days and won’t eat it all other days. We have some expensive dehydrated, food, and some Kindful brand kibble that he was obsessed with for one week when we were camping with another dog. I think I just have to pick a nutritionally balanced food with a few meal toppers and just ignore his antics for a week or so and if he gets hungry enough, he will eat it? But how is a sensitive mom to do that?? I think he thinks he’s human and he should be eating what we are eating and he’s just throwing a tantrum every day. But I also don’t wanna see him not eat. Help.

Packing dog food

My 39 lb dog should be able to carry his food but it definitely won’t fit in the bear canister . Ideas? I could buy an ursak but nothing is required where we are going so I’m thinking double zip locks?

Great idea foiled by my wild whippet

You guys all gave me this idea to cut down a Thermarest to backpack with my dog.

It was a really good idea, but the second he saw it. He went nuts, like it was the best dog toy ever! 😵‍💫

Suggest me a great page turner for a backpacking trip. I prefer non fiction, memoirs, mental health, true crime or dysfunctional families.

Recent reads I loved are “sociopath” “lovely bones” and “what these bones know” something I couldn’t stand was “yesteryear”. Not into sci fi or fantasy.

Backpacking suggestions with a dog.

We were planning something in the Hoover wilderness and I wasn’t paying attention to the use of the boundaries so now we are regrouping. I am watching the last-minute Eastern Sierra permits for a few areas where I know we can get 30 miles without crossing a national Park boundary but very curious about Emigrant and Carson Iceberg into Hoover or anything else that’s beautiful, reasonable temps in mid August and allows dogs.

Help with a dog friendly route in Hoover

Hi
I have permits for Virginia Lakes start and we were going to try to use a shuttle to connect to twin Lakes via Matterhorn canyon and Burro pass, but now I’m concerned we are going to have to enter Yosemite looks like there are some cross country options that avoid it? Stanton pass maybe? I’m an experienced backpacker, but new to bringing a dog. We could also just go back to our original plan of the emigrant wilderness.

Easiest to use and least harsh device?

I have tried a few devices. We had one that worked well for me but we misplaced it and I have no idea what it was. Tried the Yocan orbit today and the smoke was so hot and harsh that I couldn’t inhale enough.

Recommendations?

Another terrible taper

I always feel great at peak volume and then awful when I start tapering. Please tell me I’m not alone. It’s so hard mentally. My hamstrings and calves ache right now 24/7 and my legs feel so heavy running that it feels hard to do an easy run. I’m also so tired and so hungry. Experience tells me I’ll feel good by next Friday but it’s so hard to trust when I feel like this.

I’m eating well/alot , sticking to my running schedule, sleeping well. The only thing about this specific week is I lost one night of sleep working overnight but everything else is dialed and I took next week off!

Nomio and Ketones

During my hardest training block I used nomio pre long run and ketones post long run. I think it’s subtle but I do think both help me. Nomio helps me run more of the low grade uphills when I’m tired and run on tired legs in general and ketones give me a recovery boost on my back to back days.

Wondering though, going into 100, should I repose Nomio a few times during the race? Ketones taste way worse to me but not sure I’m capable mid 100 but interested in both.

Has anyone else had problems with the Miller cat radar plate?

I read about so many thefts of the radar sensor on here that I had my 23 year-old install this for me, but then I started having all these warning, lights pop-up about collision, mitigation, breaking system, lane assistance, adaptive cruise control, so I took it to the dealer. Their diagnostics say to replace the sensor and they said they had never seen one of these plates so they didn’t know if it was affecting it but of course because I put on an aftermarket accessory. It was not under warranty anymore. I was very frustrated. The guy told me to have my 23-year-old take the plate off and he had not had a problem with theft. He then said to reset the codes and see if it fixes itself with the plate gone. It seems like a pretty popular thing on this sub so I don’t know how other people haven’t had problems.

Edit Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, they generally can’t void warranty coverage just because an aftermarket part exist

A bunch of warnings on my brand new car

This is under warranty, so I’m only worried about how long the fix will take

Visiting

I joined this sub because I’ll be visiting in July. So much love for your city I love it!

I’m coming up for a race in Tahoe. Can you all suggest some good places to eat before and after? Maybe somewhere that has good pasta place before and then also a bbq place or burger place for after.

Has anyone done 100 miler in TNF sky summit ?

Has anyone done 100 miles in the TNF sky Summit?

I have the Vectiv Enduris as my main shoe but I got a pair of sky Summit and I absolutely love them. The Enduris is a lot of shoe, but I like is that it feels extremely stable and that I don’t need insoles with it but for whatever reason, I trip a lot wearing it. The sky summit is so nimble and I love that the stretchy mash upper gives my toes a lot of wiggle room and my toenails don’t hurt. Obviously I can wear a roomie or toolbox, but my toenails tend to hit the upper part and hurt in any shoe. I am a middle of the pack runner so it’s not like I really need a fast shoe, but these do seem to be more efficient and give me a little propulsion. My questions for the shoes specifically are 1. Do they have enough cushion for 100 miles 2. Are the inefficient hiking, the first 10 miles of this race goes straight uphill and I will probably be hiking.
