Don Rosa Library Reprints Announced

In the latest Fantagraphics newsletter, they announced Don Rosa reprints. I never thought I'd see the day. I missed out on most of these years ago and I won't make the same mistake again.

I don't know whether any of the previously banned stories will be included, but at this point I'm not going to let imperfect be enemy of the good.

WDS East Prussia ‘14

East Prussia ‘14 is the current game of the week over at Wargame Design Studio. I am writing to recommend it.

It features much more mobility than one might expect from a WWI game taking place on the trench-laden Western Front. Its color scheme, graphics, and overall aesthetic are pleasing to look at. It is absurdly well researched with lots of historical documentation, as is any WDS game. Loads of scenarios, too.

There aren’t many WWI games out there and this ranks as one of the best, IMO. My pipe dream is a handful of titles per year of the war, but that would take a lifetime.

Waffling among titles, trying to pick one to "main"

I've been gradually immersing myself in three games over the past handful of months —

  • War in Spain
  • War in the East 2
  • Flashpoint Campaigns Cold War

— and all have been immensely enjoyable:

  • War in Spain provides one of the richest and most in-depth operational wargames I've ever experienced. The UI is dated and generally sucks, and there are various bugs that are being ironed out, but the information overload and history lesson has been absolutely delightful. Not to mention the map is downright beautiful.
  • War in the East 2 feels like a much more polished version of what I just described above, albeit with a different system that brings everything together. It's huge and has lots of buttons to push and levers to pull for making the game as granular or computer-assisted as you want.
  • Flashpoint Campaigns Cold War indisputably has the best UI I've ever seen in a hex and counter wargame. I had never played a game past WWII before this one and it has totally sold me on the Cold War as being a fascinating time period. The historical questions proffered by it compared to wars that "actually" happened is also fascinating: it's at once historical and fantastical in ways that the two titles above aren't.

I like all the games for similar reasons, but I've hit the point where I'd like to really sit down and settle into one for years. I cannot hope to master any one of these in any reasonable time frame, being a working adult who hopes to start a family soon, but I'd certainly like to try.

I'm thinking about longevity brought about by an active PBEM community, custom/edited scenarios, and lots of historical reading to be done surrounding the game. Each of these has enough content and complexity to satisfy even the grognardiest of grognards practically into perpetuity. I see nearly 1,000,000 posts in the WitP AE Matrix Games forum, for instance. I have to wonder which of these games might have that kind of staying power.

If a gun were pointed at your head and you had to pick one of these games to play for, let's say 10 years, which would you choose and why?

Anyone read this book?

I’m finding it to be an interesting trip into the history of the hobby, both tabletop and computer.

What’s the crunchiest game with a sizeable player base besides the top few?

After 5e, PF2e, and CoC, what’s the next crunchiest game that could still be said to have a sizeable player base, do you think?

Cairn 2e?

So, came across this and it looks like fantasy Into the Odd. Have y’all played? Looks like it could be good for short- or long-term games depending on the group.

“Diegetic advancement” is kind of breaking and fixing my brain simultaneously lol

Cairn 2e?

I came across Cairn and don’t know much about it, but it looks like fantasy Into the Odd. How does it play? What are your experiences with it?

Stars Without Number vs. Classic Traveler

I want to run a science fiction game but I’m not sure which to choose. I have the facsimile edition of Traveler and SWN has a free version. Which do you like or have played a lot?

Did Into the Odd get lost in the shuffle?

I feel like I see way more attention paid to Electric Bastionland and Mythic Bastionland than Into the Odd, and I also feel like I see lots more eyes on ItO hacks than the game itself.

I’m curious if I’m just not looking in the right places or if the original game — even in its remastered form — has been effectively surpassed by these other titles.

I just don’t see much vanilla ItO, I guess, when it comes to modules or discussion. Mostly hacks or adjacent games.

His Majesty the Worm?

I came across this in my FLGS. I like the idea of a game focused on dungeon crawling with tarot cards. Has anyone here played it? I would love to hear some thoughts, as $60 is a bit steep for an impulse buy

Does B/X break in higher levels? BECMI?

I am debating whether or not to get Labyrinth Lord Revised and I've heard that "B/X" play "breaks down" at higher levels in ways that AD&D or games like Hyperborea do not, and that nobody really plays high-level B/X, sticking with only the first few levels. How true is that? Would I be better with BECMI for a long-term game?

TIA
