Have not met the doctor yet

I posted recently about the three different opinions I received regarding my partial medial meniscus tear. I am currently trying to make the decision to be able to be comfortable, perform at top level, and avoid a TKR in the future. MD at HSS in Stamford wants to do a repair. To date, I have had 2 visits. Both were w the PA. The second was after my MRI to discuss results and treatment. She said tbe Dr reccomended root repair. They were ready to schedule me. I thought it irregular that I had not met the Dr at this visit. Has anyone else experienced this?

Root repair, trim, or do nothing?

For the 69 year old hard-core female athletes in the group. From a biking incident April 2024 I have a medial root tear in my left knee. It was very disruptive to my life. One idiotic MD said i would be better in 12 weeks. I was worse. Then i told a Dr i needed to do PT. Started PT July 2024. It has been a long arduous painful process.

Finally I feel stronger, all that is left is for my calf to turn back on 100 percent. I became more symptomatic about 2 months ago. I cannot walk properly w out discomfort mostly on flats then downhill after 4 miles. I went for an MRI. It showed the tear is worse. I sought 3 opinions.

  1. Male Dr. Do a trim, he thinks about 10 - 15 petcent and a clean up of some mild arthritis. I asked about a repair and hesaid ABSOLUTELY not at.your age you WILL not heal. If you were 22 or 25 I would do that but not at your age.

  2. Female Dr at HSS wants to do a root repair. I asked about my age being a limiting factor and was told it is NOT an issue and I would be successful because

A. My my cartilage shows only minimal wear

B. My bones are good

C. I am small

  1. Another male Dr. Said there is nothing to be done. Basically suffer and ice.

I know this will get worse and I have to do something.

The repair is a BIG deal, 6 weeks off from work, careful rehab so the stitches dont pull out, muscle atrophy, 1 year of my life where I cannot petform activities as I want to, more strain on my marriage. It has been challenging the ladt 2 years bc I have been in pain and limited in what I can do.

Does anyone have any input?

TY!

Home preparation for post surgery recovery

What preparations did you make for NWB meniscus repair? Mattress on the floor so you could roll out of bed and scoot around on your butt? Hand rails to pull yourself up and lower yourself on to the toilet? A day and night nurse to apply ice at regular intervals? What does one do all day for 6 weeks? How do you keep from getting muscle atrophy and ending up so weak you sustain another injury?

I am scared

Hi All. 69 year old female athletes here. Biking accident April 2024. MRI showed a small posterior medial root tear in my left knee. 3 male doctors laughed it off, 1 said surgery.

I opted for heavy duty PT. I have been in discomfort and pain since this happened. It felt like it was getting worse so I visited HSS in NYvand saw a woman. This is the result of my latest MRI

Impression:

Complex tearing of the medial meniscus extending into the posterior horn root insertion, resulting in partial extrusion of the body segment. There is associated mild medial compartment chondral wear.

Mild patellofemoral compartment chondral wear.

I am awaiting my follow up appointments.

I am terrified of surgery because I seem to not heal as well as others. I am a bit hypernobile. I want to be able to walk, hike, bike pain free! I do not want a knee replacement !

Please tell me your experiences. The good the bad and the ugly.

Spoiler TV/Goliath season 2

When Tom Wyatt has all his limbs amputated and he was stoned on feel good drugs. In his demented state he thought Gabriel was his friend . As if this image was not disturbing enough he cuts his tongue out! I cannot get that image of his limbless body out of my mind!

Liz is an unfit mother

Just watched the episode where Numbnut Liz comes home after work. She opens the door, draws her wrapon, then sees Kate sitting there holding Agnes. Say WHAT? Who was watching the baby while she was at work? Did she leave her alone all day in a crib? This scene was unrealistic and ridiculous. What say the hive?

Having my baby...really?

I cannot believe the writers put that horrible song "having my baby" in the episode. I hated that song when it hit the charts. Even at my young age I realized the folly of the lyrics. Romantizing the patriarchal notion that a woman shows her love of a man by having "HIS" baby. Let her do all the work while he pushes the agenda of spreading his seed. Now that I have lived longer I know having a baby is far from romance. Many women I know refer to their children as " MY" children. I wanted to barf when that song was played. Anyone else?

Ressler

I am on season 2. Who else has a crush on Ressler? I think he is good looking, loyal, and supportive of Elizabeth Keen. He brings her birthday dinner, has her back on raids and shoot outs, even when she holds her ex husband hostage for four months. THAT was ridiculous. She is ridiculous. Ill take Ressler!

Peptide rage

I am 69 and an athlete hanging on w a knee injury . I still lift heavy ( for me, I am small) , bike w high intensity and hike as best I can. All around me injectable peptides are being used. I hesitate. I do not want to willy nilly start injecting chemicals into my body w out a plan by a professional or knowing EXACTLY what the ingredients are. What about anyone else?

Rocker plates

Hi all. I am researching indoor training set ups. My medial meniscus is giving me problems so I hesitate to get a regular trainer. I rode on the wahoo rollers with the front stand for 30 minutes. That felt comfortable but I do not know how my knees will feel riding longer and w more frequency. Has anyone used rocker plates to eliminate knee pain? If so what is your set up?

Wish I could crawl out of my skin and body

April 2024 I had a bike accident. It did something to me. I was depressed and anxious for 12 weeks, I received bad medical advice, and finally on my own figured out I needed PT. I have been diligently working at getting back since then and cannot get back to where I was. I have pain in my knees and feet. I still appear fine to others except MAYBE my husband who mostly seems clueless and annoyed with me, I was an athlete, not giving a thought to hiking up a mountain in Colorado, hammering out a bike ride going for a 6 mile walk. My legs worked just fine. Very little maintenance required.

Now, everything except work (which sustains me) feels like an ordeal. I no longer can be carefree and hop on a bike, go for a walk...etc. I used to feel strong now i feel like one false move and I will break. I feel my life is over. I seriously wish I could go to sleep and not wake up.

Communication with my husband is frustrating. He misunderstands so much. Today I told him I was tired from him waking me too early to tell me it was raining. He could not understand that just because I was tired did not mean I could sleep. I wish I coukd fall asleep anytime in 5 minutes like he can but I cannot. I think he would he better off without me. I do my best to ge a good wife but it is never good enough.

I am isolating more. If it were not for work I would spend my time alone going to the gym and relaxing. To look at me you would never know I am struggling.

Anyone else?

2026 hike

Hi Has anyone done a hike where they stay in the huts for a couple of nights then come down and stay in a hotel then go back up? Or is it better to just stay in better accommodations in the mountains? I do not want to carry a heavy pack so I need transport of luggage. I am an experienced day hiker having hiker 14ers in Colorado. am leaving from NY.

I have been wearing custom orthotics for my floppy feet since I was a teenager ( now 68 yrs old) . December 2025 plantar facitis kicked in due to complications from an injury April 2024. (I have been in PT since July 2024 for that) Since December my PT has had me working w out my orthotics, barefoot and barefoot shoes. Thete was no way I could wear my custom orthotics since December so I've been running around work etc w different OTC inserts. Yesterday, I walked trails and road 8 miles w my old custom orthotics. It did not feel good. Is it possible I dont need the stiff customs and can use the more flexible OTC? Has anyone else strengthened their lower chain and feet enough to ditch their customs?
