





Delhi Police is using AI to set your fielding. 💀
If you've been following the Jantar Mantar protests, you've probably seen the
Delhi Police Mobile Command and Control Vehicle making rounds on social
media.
Instead of debating it, I wanted to understand the technology inside it.
So I spent some time researching how AI-powered facial recognition systems
actually work.
Here's the simplified version.
It all starts with a live CCTV feed.
The AI doesn't instantly know who you are.
First, it detects that there's a face in the frame.
Then it maps key facial landmarks like your eyes, nose, mouth, and jawline.
Instead of storing your actual photo, the system converts your face into a
mathematical representation called a face embedding. Think of it as a unique
numerical signature created from your facial features.
That numerical signature is then compared against thousands or even millions
of records stored in a database.
If the similarity score crosses a predefined threshold, the system displays a
potential match for a human operator to review.
Despite what movies show, modern facial recognition systems usually don't
make the final decision themselves. They assist humans by narrowing down
possible matches.
One thing I learned while researching this is that these systems aren't limited to
real time monitoring.
Photos and videos captured during public events can also be reviewed later
during an investigation.
If authorities suspect an offence was committed, those recordings may be
examined alongside other evidence, depending on the investigation and
applicable laws.
That's one of the reasons facial recognition has become such a widely debated
technology.
The interesting part is that this isn't technology built only for policing.
The same core technology is already being used in Face Unlock on your phone,
airport e-gates, banking KYC, attendance systems, and even finding missing
persons.
That's also why facial recognition has become one of the biggest conversations
in AI.
On one side, it has the potential to improve public safety and speed up
investigations.
On the other, it raises important questions about privacy, surveillance,
transparency, and how such systems should be regulated.
As a cybersecurity student, I find this intersection of AI, computer vision, and
cybersecurity far more interesting than the headlines themselves.
Instead of reacting to what we see online, I think it's worth understanding the
technology behind it first.
