Sun Ra - “Sleeping Beauty” (1979)

Sun Ra - “Sleeping Beauty” (1979)

Im a sucker for Arkestra records with vocals, so naturally this one is one of my favorites. This record was my introduction to Ra a few years ago, and it opened a portal to spiritual jazz for me. I just can’t get enough of this sound.

Springtime Again is a song for new beginnings, Door of the Cosmos is potential energy in the universe, and Sleeping Beauty is a lullaby for recognizing the beauty that’s all around us.

The Silver Cord + cat tax

Haven’t spun my Extended copy in awhile and was inspired by u/Specific_Hornet to put it on. Damn is it a good listen on wax! It’s great for cat naps too, apparently

A very fitting pickup from my recent trip to LA

It’s always a pleasure to check out different stores on vacation, but damn if it doesn’t hurt the wallet! Check out Record Safari in Los Feliz if you’re in the area

Don Cherry - S/T (1975)

This album is such a pleasant trip. The eastern influences on this combined with the vocals and Cherry’s introspective playing — transport me to a different headspace. This record is a great entry point into jazz-fusion/world music that was huge in the 70’s. I love it

What’s your Favorite Zappa solo and why is it “Inca Roads”?

Pair that with George’s at the end and it’s just not fair to compare other songs

Grant Green - Alive! (1970)

Finally found a copy of this in the flesh! The grooves on this thing leave me speechless and out of breath. The pocket is DEEP 😮‍💨

This is easily my favorite playing of Grant’s. I love that he was open in trying to incorporate the popular sound of the time into his music. I really need to check out more of Idris Muhammad’s material.

Love Will Tear Us Apart… again

This is my orange Cleopatra Halloween pressing of Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division (1980)

My favorite single of all time.

The story of Joy Division and Ian Curtis feels both relatable and tragic to me. His writing touches on parts of being human that people don’t always talk about openly, but that many people struggle with every day.

What I’ve always found beautiful is what happened afterward. The music could have ended there, disappearing into that moment, but instead the remaining members continued under a new name without forgetting where they came from.

Ian Curtis didn’t survive, but the music did as New Order.

Bobby Hutcherson - Montara (1975)

We truly live in the golden age of jazz vinyl. This Tone Poet pressing is perfect. This record really scratches the itch for jazz with a Latin flair

Happenings - Bobby Hutcherson (1966)

This record is a percussionists dream. Herbie Hancock, Bob Cranshaw, and Joe Chambers as support. Wow! Is the playing on this record fantastic or what? Herbie is flying at the wheels giving it his all while Cranshaw and Chambers are acting as a single unit. Hutcherson is hitting tonight

This and a cup of coffee

Once I placed this on the turntable I was immediately pulled in by Evans solo piano. By the time I sat down and the bass and drums enter, wow was I floored by how full and detailed this recording sounds! I really love this period of Evans career

What are some of your favorite recordings that also have this level of fidelity?

For Those Who Chant - Luis Gasca

Sometimes you have to trust your intuition at the record store and buy something based on feel alone. The cover of this beauty caught my eye initially and then I turned it around and read the personnel. Joe Henderson AND Carlos Santana?! I knew it had to go home with me.
-
This record will put you in a trance with its rhythm’s and chants. Luis Gasca’s piercing horn is nothing to scoff at either! Now I have a whole new catalog to chip away at

Question about Coltrane’s saxual orientation.

Feel free to downvote me, I’m just gonna get straight to the point. Was John bisaxual? I know he was known primarily as a tenor guy, but there is evidence (photo☝️) of him enjoying a soprano once in awhile. Was it just an experimental phase for him?
-
I think it’s fair to say that he was a horny guy. He was always tootin’ on them thangs!! Also just for jazz history purposes, is there any video of him blowing them both at the same time? 👀

This one makes my head spin

Bill Evan’s Trio - “Sunday at the Village Vanguard”
OJC reissue
-
Jazz is one of the only things that makes my nervous system fully surrender and drift somewhere else. This album puts me in the room living a memory I never had - The smoke hanging in the air, the clinking silverware, the low chatter between tables, with a glass of whiskey in hand. All while the Trio decorates the air.
-
It’s sublime

DIIV at the Swan Dive

Had my mind blown at a super small venue. Their sound was able to suck you in and completely envelope you. DRAAG was the perfect opener too, I haven’t been able to stop listening to them since. Two must see acts doing it right now!

I love DIIV

Pictures from the Vegas show at the Swan Dive! Beautiful show, I think they really should rename the venue to the Swan DIIV
