Paint Scheme advice

Work in progress. I'm worried that it lacks contrast. The metallics feel totally too similar. When I greyscale the image there is minimal tonal differentiation across the model. I wonder if I should lighten or darken the trim to make it stand out more. Or am I over thinking the whole thing?

Thoughts??? Advice???

Jade Sentinel Dreadnought

I haven't worked out how to do this and make it work, but this needs to be kitbashed into a White Scars knight or Dreadnought.

Has anyone else had this urge?

I Finished My Valdor

I must admit that I've been vocal about my hatred for the head sculpt of Valdor, as shown in the official forgeworld paint job. People told me to STFU and told me that the sculpt was fine. I'd actually put off painting this model because I didn't want to paint such an ugly head sculpt.

But I hold my hands up and admit that I was so wrong about the sculpt. It's fine! It's just the forgeworld paint job that makes him look like Sloth from The Goonies.

I also thought this was a great opportunity to use the Custodes 'battles I fought in' transfers on his cloak.

I'm not a great painter. My paint schemes are scruffy compared to some of you super crisp people. But I'm pleased with how he turned out.

We were all new once...

...but ouch, it's getting difficult to finish missions with all the newbies rushing to the highest difficulty they can without even understanding basic game mechanics.

I'm levelling an Ogryn. Until I get to 30 and work out how to play him effectively, I'm sticking to lower difficulties..
I've always struggled to get into Ogryns and it's my last class for me to hit 30 with. Knowing my limits with the class I'll stay in Heresy for a while. I've been unable to finish the last eight games due to level 12s running around without even the basic understanding of how to play.
Not even attempting the mini-games, not picking up or carrying powercells, ignoring medical-servators despite having almost no life. Running past the ammo crates I drop at their feet and then running out of ammo.

I've been trying to offer helpful advice such as sticking together, using ammo and health packs when you see them. One guy went down 16 times in one game! I don't even know how you die that much. The game took forever because I had to keep rescuing him. I want to help, but nobody ever replies or pays any attention. They just run off (usually back where we came from) and die 2 minutes later because they tried to solo 3 Crushers without understanding that dodging is a thing.

I've had to go back to my Vet and HS to destress.

I know the game is free on the Playstation store - so is this an influx of CoD players who just want to go on solo rampages and think the game is entirely about shooting? What's the mentality behind having minimum understanding of the game, rushing to the highest difficulty possible and then expecting to be carried by your teammates?

I get that everyone has to start from somewhere and we all sucked at first...but the utter refusal of these people to accept tips or advice is really frustrating.

What Happened to the OG Custodes?

After the siege of Terra there were less than 1000 Custodes. The survivors were battered but victorious. Valdor vanished, that much we know (possibly to return as the King in Yellow), but what happened to the rest? What happened to the thousands who were made in the 10,000 years following?

These guys hit their 40s and then effectively cease aging. They're immortal. I know that over time, as their skills fractionally diminish, they become Eyes of the Emperor. But let's consider for a moment that until Robert Girlyman came back, the Custodes restricted themselves to the palace. That means that the chances of any Custodes dying in combat was extremely minimal.

So they would have stood guard for thousands of years without combat or death.

Obviously, this is unwritten lore, so there's no definite answer (so don't act like you know for sure without providing a source), but it would suggest that there are thousands upon thousands of Eyes of the Emperor roaming the galaxy.

Dan Abnett, if you read this, I have an idea for a story line - A legion of 10,000 'old' Custodes serving under The King in Yellow. 😄

What are your thoughts? What happened to these older Custodes?

An Old Man Rambles About Women Playing 40k

I'm an old(ish) man. I started collecting an Eldar army back at the tail end of the 1990s when I was 14 or 15.
Back then, 40k was ultra-nerdy. The amount of shit people used to get in school for 'collecting gay little models' was quite high.

You NEVER let anyone know you were into warhammer. That was social suicide. If anyone ever suspected you of being into 'dragon dungeon models', you denied everything! If a girl discovered that you liked warhammer, they would tell all the other girls and you could basically rule out ever having sex for the rest of your life. There was a genuine fear of girls finding out about our dirty little hobby.

I remember always looking around before entering a Games Workshop store to make sure nobody I knew saw me going in.

Girls did not exist in the hobby back then. I mean...they probably did...but you never saw them. The idea of women playing 40k was enough to make your brain combust from the sheer impossibility of the concept.

26 years have passed since then. I dropped out of the hobby for a few decades and I NEVER let any girlfriend know about my secret past. The stigma was still strong, even years later.

Eventually I got married to a woman who actually has no issue with the hobby and is quite supportive (which was a surprise)

But hell, I am still so scarred by my teenage years. I still feel embarrassed going into a Warhammer store. I still look over my shoulder to see who might see me going inside.

My local Warhammer store has female staff. They are really friendly and will happily chat to you about the hobby. I have noticed that whenever they ask a simple question, I literally become a monosyllabic 15 year old again. I avoid any conversation and just respond with grunts and pointing of fingers at paint or models. The idea that a female might play or be interested in 40k is just a mental impossibility. I have a genuine fear of talking to them in case they tell everyone that I collect 'gay little models'.

Ultimately, it made me realise that, despite how things used to be, Warhammer is attracting so many more people of so many different backgrounds. It's great to see women engage in the hobby. It's great that the 15 year olds of today no longer need to keep their hobby a secret. I know there are drawbacks to things becoming mainstream (You have a wider net of people who want the hobby to represent their specific ideas), but it's just awesome to have a more diverse fanbase.

I'm really curious how people feel about certain zones. There are some I love and some I hate and I wondered if I was alone in my feelings or if others felt the same way.

Could you make two lists? One for questing/gameplay and one for chilling/building, because I feel the those two aspects can affect how you feel about the zone.

Questing/Gameplay

  1. Plains

  2. Black Forest

  3. Meadows

  4. Swamp

  5. Mountains

  6. Mistlands

  7. Ashlands (I cannot express how much I hate Ashlands)

Chilling/Building

  1. Meadows

  2. Plains

  3. Mountains

  4. Black Forest

  5. Mistlands

  6. Swamp

  7. Ashlands
