First All-purpose boot! Canada West Boots WM.Moorby 2817

Sizing details for those curious. I'm 7.5 closing in on 8 between D and E. Theses only come in 2E so I sized down to 6EE until the side wobble went down. Comfortable amount of room for my toes and they don't reach the tip of the boot.

Entry-level boots available in Canada?

I'm looking into getting my first pair of long-term boots but I'm having a hard time finding a pair at my budget due Canadian import taxes. I would like a versatile pair that can be dressed up or down.

So far, I am using Thursday Boots Captains as the baseline at $285 CAD, but the synthetic insole is a big con for me and would prefer a leather insole.

Redwings are available, either the Iron Ranger or Beckman, but that's a big jump to ~$500 CAD and ~$567 CAD respectively.

Canada West Boots would be the answer, but I am a Brannock size 7. 😂 Edit 2: Okay, this is not true! They do make sizes smaller than 7, but since they only sell via retailers I was only looking at Toronto retailers which only stocked size 8 and above! Herbert's actually stocks the complete size range!

Edit: Jim Green is also on the table with the 719, but the smallest size is 7 and if I need to size down that would be an issue. Any suggestions?

Canadian Import Duties and Taxes for Made in Japan Products Bought from US Companies?

I'm looking into buying a non-stenciled Buzz Rickson N-1 deck jacket from History Preservation Associates. The jacket itself is already pricey at $695 USD, but we also have to deal with the import duties and taxes.

Does any Canadian have experience with this situation?

Cutting my own insoles?

I was looking around for leather insoles to help me fill out my Jim Green Vellies and came across a thread that suggested it was cheaper to buy a sheet of vegetable tanned leather and cut one out myself.

I'm looking to order 4mm thick leather and use the insoles that came with my boots as a template.

Are there any flaws with this plan?

Rainbow Country Hercules Worth?

Saw this Hercules for sale second hand for $1450 CAD (Edit: $1035 USD) Anyone have experience with fit? I'm 5'7" ~140lbs. Shoulders and pit to pit match me perfectly but I've also heard it's quite long for a jacket?

ID on Vellies

Found these on my local FB Marketplace for $50 and they do look like Vellies (correct number of holes) but I don't see the same colour on the website.

I've also read that we should size up 0.5 - 1 when it comes to JG boots. Is this true? I'm a US 8 and these are US 8.5.

Do these Redwings look salvageable/worth thrifting?

Found these in a local FB Marketplace post for $140 CAD. Looks well worn with plenty of life in them, but I kind of like the idea of breaking in a new boot all by myself.

I'm 28M and was introduced to Fidelity by my father near the end of college. At the time I did not have the time to research DIY investing and went with whatever my financial advisor recommended. I'm total, I have invested ~$10 000 into Fidelity Global Innovators® Class Series B (5973), which to my understanding is a tech focused mutual fund, into my TFSA.

After reading a bit and understanding passive investing and MER a more, I understand that the 2.23% MER plus a 1% ISC is basically robbery. Maybe not at $10k, but would soon be if it grows.

What I am having trouble reconciling is if I have the correct read on my situation due to a variety of opinions I've found.

Every resource I've scoured hammers home that passive investing outperforms active investing. If that were the case, why does active investing exist at all? Was it the old school way of investing before ETF's became popular and more widely offered? I've also read that high MERs, while undesirable, are acceptable as long as they perform better than index funds. But what index and I suppose to compare a tech focused mutual fund to?

At the end of the day, I understand that starting to invest is already a massive step in the right direction and I should worry about time in the market over timing the market. However, the more I explore self-directed investing, the more I'm having a hard time making the call to stay or pull out since I feel like there's a lot I don't know.

My gut tells me the mutual fund WILL cost me a lot in the long run IF it does not perform, but it also tells me that it can't be as easy as finding a 100% stocks ETF (since I'm young and can take risk) and just dumping money into it every time I get my paycheck, right?
