Indra and Vritra: The Cosmic Battle
Rigveda 1.32.1
Translation:
I shall proclaim the heroic deeds of Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt. He slew the serpent, released the waters, and opened the channels of the rivers.
Rigveda 1.32.2
Translation:
He slew the serpent who lay upon the mountain. Tvaṣṭṛ fashioned the heavenly thunderbolt for him. Then the waters flowed forth to the ocean like cows rushing to their calves.
Indra, the mighty king of the Devas and wielder of the Vajra, confronted Vritra, the great serpent who imprisoned the world's waters. By slaying Vritra, he released the rivers, restored fertility to the land, and upheld Ṛta—the eternal cosmic order that sustains the universe.
Indra here is the primordial force (the expansion force that expanded the universe that which we see now) vs the vritra the compressive force that was trying to hold down the universe from the previous crunch.
