i saw this notification when checking the pending status for one of my payments. it seemed interesting so i decided to try it. i used it (for the first time, this is my first time hearing about it) to connect with doordash, just to see what it did. before i even had a chance to change tabs it had sent security codes to my uber account (with a different email) and tried charging my spotify account (also with a different email as well as a different phone number). i went to start a conversation but the support agent just kept saying the same thing about having an existing subscription with spotify (i don’t, i haven’t used it in years) . this is all just really weird and i was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience

🚨‼️LONG POST!! sorry, i ramble a lot. tldr is basically the post title

this is more of a personal question but since this sub has people from both sides of the aisle i figured it’d be worth asking here.

i generated a simple offline program because a lot of family tree sites for this game i play didn’t really have any good/working/non-subscription based alternatives after one went offline. i’m not really sure why no one had ever made a desktop program since im sure paying for servers got to be expensive, but i digress.

the point is i had a chatgpt trial which came with codex which i used to generate a family tree program, but i put in very little work besides testing features & requesting new ones/changes. i’m only a freshman in college so i haven’t had the required courses in order to know how to program something like this on my own. i initially was going to just keep this for myself because i know the community online is not fond of ai, but i figured maybe they’re the vocal minority and people might actually like an alternative to the paid & defunct sites.

i will not be trying to pass this off as my own, i will have a clear “ai generated” disclosure. i will not be putting it up behind a paywall, i did not make it so i feel no reason to profit from it. i will be transparent about my knowledge, i do not yet have the capacity to fully troubleshoot issues/make extreme changes.

i know some people will say “if i wanted an i program i would ask ai myself”. i do understand that, there’s nothing wrong with that prerogative. however i know not everyone can afford a subscription to make something like this, or not everyone wants to use up their allotted time/credits for that, so i wanted to offer another way.

additionally, a lot of antis’ issues with ai is how it harms the environment. in my opinion, downloading already generated programs would save some of the energy/water/etc that would be taken up by multiple people generating their own of the exact same program. of course some may argue that downloading an ai generated program supports the “programmer” (though i would argue if its offered for free there’s not really any support happening), in which case that’s totally fine. i’m not trying to force anyone to download anything and i gain nothing from downloads anyway.

to me, this sounds like something that is not a problematic usage of ai, and when people use ai to the extent that i did i think this is a very good way to do it. you know exactly what you’re downloading and you’re not paying someone who didn’t really do anything.

i’m not as concerned with harassment/negativity as i once was so that’s not really a factor, it’s mostly whether or not this is okay to do and if there’s anything i can do to be more respectful/transparent to users and people who do program their own things.

misc concerns i thought of just to preemptively reply to:
* it doesn’t get marked as malware for me. i have malwarebytes and windows defender
* it doesn’t connect to the internet. i can’t remember why that is a problem (cybersecurity concerns i believe) but the program doesn’t do that at all
* it doesn’t touch your in-game save so there’s no way to corrupt it

so i saw this ad or something where the otter zoomed past in this tunnel looking thing like it was straight out of zootopia 2. i’m honestly not sure if it was ai or anything because i can’t find ANY pictures of something like that, for that same reason i have no clue if it’s ethical or not (i know very little about animal ethics, i just like seeing cute animals in my zoo 🥲), but if it is does anyone have any idea if it’s possible to create a functional one in pz2?
