50 Years on, Anne Rice’s ‘Interview With the Vampire’ Remains Immortal in San Francisco | KQED

There's a lot of in in this article published today so I thought I'd share it.

I really loved AR's particular attraction to her first queer fans who came to a book signing dressed in 18th century clothing as Lestat and Louis. That audience is still a big part of her fandom. I wish she was still here to see what Sam, Jacob and Assad have made of her beloved Vampire Chronicles.

I know it's a long piece but I love seeing her old pho and also the list of events taking place in S.F.

Enjoy.

Vampire Dreaming

The word I see the most in The Vampire Chronicles (books and series) besides blood is dreaming. There seems to be a debate between multiple characters about whether vampires dream or not.

Claudia says she never dreams but Louis catches her having a nightmare (probably about Bruce but we don't know).

Lestat who is intoxicated by Baudelaire who wrote extensively about dreams, sleep and artificial states of consciousness, writes 2 songs based on the French writer's works Le Fontane de Sang and Fleur du Mal. He tells his Italian mother that Italy never produced a Baudelaire. Lestat is fascinated by Baudelaire's belief that true reality lies only in dreams and that to be a true artist (which Lestat wants to be more than anything else) one must capture the fleeting, chaotic beauty of dreams. In fact the writer analyzed the effects of wine, opium and hashish to trigger what he calls waking dreams. When Lestat gets high by drinking a drugged-out Baby Jenks we see him doing the same.

While AR sticks with the traditional vampire lore of sleeping vampires experience a kind of waking death in the coffin, she allows the Mind Gift to make an interesting alternative to dreaming--telepathy.

Do vampires dream in your opinion? Or is that something destroyed by the Dark Gift and replaced with something even better? Or worse?

Now is the time for Monsters

Read this quote from 1926 while watching a documentary about the development of AI and it seemed so fitting to our Beautiful Unwell:

"The old world is dying

And the new world struggles to be born.

Now is the time for MONSTERS."

Attributed to Antonio Gramsci, an Italian leftist and founder of communist party in that country who was imprisoned by Mussolini for his anti-fascist views.

Wish he'd been alive for our show. He was prescient in many ways.

Chardonnay anyone?

Next time you see someone order a glass of Chardonnay take a closer look. Are there eco-flo bathrooms? Are they headed toward the restroom, glass in hand? Is it after dark? Look into their eyes very closely but not too close. They just might be a...

Monster or God

Rereading and rewatching have triggered some strange emotions in me. Lestat calls himself both a Monster and a God in the show and the books.

If you were a vampire which side would you be on? And can you be both God and Monster simultaneously?

What do Lestat and Louis say to each other during that final embrace in IWTV?

In the reunion scene in Episode 8 of IWTV part 2 what do you imagine Lestat and Louis say to each other in NOLA after that ecstatic embrace?

Can be anything from "Honey I'm home " (a la Ricky Ricardo) to "I return as your Immortal Companion and endless Love." To anything you can imagine after 70+ years apart. (Not the actors but their characters.)

I can only watch at night

On my 2nd rewatch of IWTV and TVL I find I can only watch after night falls. There's something obscene about watching my favorite vampires in the bright daytime sun. I think I'm over-identifying but I can't help it. Not even on rainy days. Does anyone else feel this way and have these watching habits?

Sam Reid Says The Vampire Lestat Is the Ultimate Theatre Kid | Playbill

This is years old but it gives a lot of insight into Sam and how he views Lestat. It is also where he admits he's a "theater kid".

Lestat is a mash-up of Jim Morrison, Stan Rice and AR herself

When Anne Rice originally created the Brat Prince she based him physically on her husband poet Stan Rice--tall and blond. She planned to write a single standalone book IWTV. As the years passed she based Lestat on herself and finally as Doors' front man Jim Morrison who gave his feline movements onstage to the Gothic Rock God himself.

As for his name it translates in French to the state or status and who could be more status conscious than our beloved Lestat? Legend has it that the character was originally named Le Stan after her husband but a typo created history.

The year the book was published and the subsequent movie saw an uptick in babies' named Lestat.

Would you name your kid Lestat? And on what do you think AR based the unusual name, which has become world renowned?

Thoughts, opinions, discussions??

The Failures inaugurated my new car

I bought a new car today and as I was taking my first rambling ride I blasted my stereo with Lestat's The Failures. First song to commemorate the summer drive was Brutal Love. Windows open, soft breeze in my face and blue skies all around, the song was incredible.

It had to be my most memorable drive. Is anyone else doing this in their new car or old? I can't get these songs out of my head and I don't want to...

Old Lindsey is a Dinosaur of News

I worked as a newspaper reporter in the 80s and 90s and Lindsay is the best portrayal of a managing editor/news director that I have ever seen. He is sexist and homophobic and just plain evil in the way he handles his staff especially Helen and the gay reporters/cameramen. Believe me there were plenty of men like him in the news biz. And I'm sure there are still some today. But back then when women were scarce in the city room or on-camera there were plenty of Lindsay's. He delights in his ignorance and misogyny. He cackles and revels in getting even with employees who don't agree with him or who have worked twice as hard to get where they are in positions in the news. There were no women in positions of power in those days and we had to put up with autocratic a-holes like him every day. He is played by actor William McInnes and he does a great job. I think he actually enjoys his demonic but very real character.

What do you think of Lindsay?

Gene Tierney as Calculating Villain

As one of the most beautiful women in classic films

Tierney plays one of the worst villains I've ever seen in Leave Her to Heaven. She deliberately lets her new husband's crippled brother drown on purpose. She despises her mother and is jealous of her adopted sister.

She even tries to kill her unborn child by throwing herself down a flight of stairs. She is godawful--manipulative, cruel, insulting and murderous.

Made in 1945 it's unusual to have a gorgeous female protagonist act as such a devil. Has anyone else seen this film? And isn't it incredible? I recommend it to anyone who loves watching a sociopathic, egotistical, narcissistic "heroine'. It's ahead of it's time and watches as a much more modern movie.

Lestat's Dark Angel/Wolf Killer costume during One Night Only concert

Did anyone else notice Lestat's black angel's-wing jacket on YouTube filmed concert at the Beacon in NYC? He was singing "Your Biggest Fan" and he donned this garment that made him look like a dark angel and it was so sexy and evocative and also so Rock God. It reminded me of his wolf-killer jacket too.

Sam Reid vs Tom Cruise — Which Lestat Was Actually Right? | Interview With The Vampire

Who did it better? Like the Doublemint Twins if you're old enough (like me) to remember those ads.

This video makes some valid points for TC. Ultimately it's Reid for me. He has the messy frantic feel of TVL I always imagined as I read the books.

Head to head what do you think? Who plays the best Lestat?

If given the chance to get the Dark Gift would you take it?

I'm curious what you think and feel. As long as it's not forced upon you would you accept it and smile or would you resent it and suffer?

Lestat made up as Rock God

Makeup and hair department heads Tami Hale and Stefanie Terzo discuss the inspirations and techniques behind Sam Reid’s portrayal of the titular modern-day rock god. https://thesetset.com/articles/the-vampire-lestat-makeup-hair-stefanie-terzo-tami-lane-interview

This article explained what I'd been wondering about his new look this season. It's partly his decisions and partly the makeup and hair depth.

I envy Hale and Terzo's abilities to get so close to my vampire love and not get drained. They also get to touch Sam Reid. Something I dream about.

Something for the Ladies

When Episode 5 started and Lestat said "Straighten your ties, inflate your lips both facial and labial" I swooned.

Always hoped Lestat would include us women in his romantic fantasies.( Despite Antoinette he favors the handsome young men.)

Sign me up. Anyone else?

Could Fromville be a Liminal Space

Could the entire town be a space between reality and fantasy? Or Heaven and HELL? Maybe it's limbo where people are dead but can't move on to their ultimate destination. This could explain hallucinations, seizures and other physical reactions during death

It could also explain the MIY and other spooks who are haunting them. Since they are trapped in this space.

Fromville acts like a liminal space where it is "an in-between zone where you are not where you were but not yet where you are going ".

It brings up feelings of disorientation, vulnerability, and uncertainty. It's a threshold state. Although it's usually a psychological state--such as the transition between high school and.college--it can also be a physical place such as Fromville.

Comes from the Latin word limen meaning in-between. Just a question. What do you think?
