From Hamburg, With Love: The History of VST

I enjoyed this video from the YouTube channel Red Means Recording (a real human channel, not slop), figured a few other people might as well. It covers the birth and evolution of VST's with it's ups and downs. Informative and entertaining IMO.

the worlds most popular software synthesizer (Serum 2) now has a linux version

xfer, the creators of the super popular software synth VST Serum (and Serum2) has quietly released a beta of a linux port on their forum. I've got it up and running in Bitwig/Ubuntu and it's working like a treat.

For people who like to make music on the computer this is a huge victory, as it's a plugin that has never run properly with wine/yabridge and is often cited as a reason people won't switch. It wouldn't surprise me if other plugin developers see this and take note 🤞️

https://xferrecords.com/forums/serum/serum-2-linux-beta (requires a license to access, of course)

also comes with serum fx

18 free linux plugins in the 2026 KVR Developer Challenge

The 2026 KVR Dev Challenge is up and out of the 56 entries it features 18 plugins that run natively on linux. If you click the penguin itll sort out the ones that are win/mac only. I havent gotten to dig into them too much but the ones that caught my attention were Fogbank (a multifx plug in), Osiris Piano (dont want to pay for pianoteq but want a realistic piano? here you go) , Sucrose (blepfx and uplugred working together is so cool) and Retrospect (envelope driven time stretching/warping). Vote for your favorites, would be cool if a project that supported linux won.

if you find something cool, talk about it.

Laptop too old for 26.04? "No provider of glBlitFramebuffer found."

Hello!

Trying to prepare an old Thinkpad t400 for sale on marketplace, and wanted to put a fresh/clean install of Ubuntu on it for whoever might want to pick it up, and im running into a funny problem and wondering... Is this thing too old for 26.04?

context: I copied the iso to a usb, booted up fine, but whenever I tried to start the installer it opened a black window for a second or two, then closed without an error.

So I downloaded 25.10, copied that to my USB and it worked fine. Went through the entire install proccess, updated, and then got the message to update to 26.04.

did that, went through the whole update process, no problems. rebooted, everything seems working fine, except when i open the snap store/app center, it does the same black window and then closes.

I tried launching snap store from the terminal, and this is what i got:

user@ThinkPad-T400:-$ /snap/bin/snap-store %U

Gtk-Message: 18:48:17.045: Not loading module "atk-bridge": The functionality is provided by GTK natively. Please try to not load it.

Gdk-Message: 18:48:17.566: Unable to load from the cursor theme

SnapdException: SnapdException(kind: null, message: invalid snap name: "%U", status: Bad Request, statusCode: 400)

No provider of glBlitFramebuffer found. Requires one of:

Desktop OpenGL 3.0

GL_ARB_framebuffer_object

OpenGL ES 3.0

GL_EXT_ framebuffer blit

GL_NV_framebuffer blit

Aborted

(core dumped) /snap/bin/snap-store %U

Not really sure what to make of this one, hoping someone can help steer me in the right direction.

Thanks for your time.

Lenovo Thinkpad T400

intel core 2 duo p8700 x2

6gb RAM

intel mobile gm45 express graphics chipset

i checked to see if i could update the firmware, maybe something was out of date, but firmware updater seems to have the same black window problem.

how do i fully disable the ubuntu dock?

hello internet!

in 26.04 if i turn off the dock (either via toggling the extension off in extension-manager or the options in ubuntu desktop options in settings), it puts a rather large dock on the overview instead. I wouldnt mind it too much if it followed the appearance preferences I set in the extension but i'd rather it wasn't there at all.

Anyone know how to hide it?

thanks!
