The Mattapan Shooting Video
So I posted a video from that event and got a lot pushback (I understand why).
Seeing videos like this is honestly depressing. This was in Boston, and the person killed was reportedly from Brockton, which is another city in Massachusetts that deals with a lot of the same issues.
I’m not posting this to shame Boston, Brockton, or Black people. I’m Black, and that’s exactly why this bothers me. These are our neighborhoods, our families, our friends, and our kids growing up around this. At some point we have to stop treating shootings like background noise.
We can talk about racism, poverty, bad schools, lack of opportunity, and over-policing because all of that matters. But we also have to be honest about the stuff happening inside the community too. Beef culture, people glorifying violence, carrying guns over pride, and turning every argument into something deadly is destroying people who look like us.
Black people do need to come together, but not in a corny “just do better” way. We need more mentors, more fathers and older men stepping up, more community programs that actually reach young people, more accountability, and more people willing to say this lifestyle is not something to glorify.
Mattapan and Brockton are not “bad” because Black people live there. They are places with real communities that deserve better than becoming hashtags every time somebody gets shot.
Rest in peace to Jose Dantes. This should not be normal.
