I am so thankful to find this sub

Just found this sub today. Reading through these posts makes me feel like I’m not alone in all of this.

We are in Canada. Husband is a surgical resident and I am a SAHM, we have two little ones. I have been with my husband since before he began med school 10 years ago. Residency is still far from over, fellowship is looming, exams, as well as where he may get a job and have to possibly make a permanent move far away.

I don’t really have anyone that understands the hardships, outsiders just look at it as “Oh you get to stay at home and be married to a doctor, what problems do you have?”

I’m not about to spill the beans on these people of how far into debt we are, how underpaid residents are for their time, how strained our relationship can feel with the long hours, the feeling of likely having to uproot your entire life permanently to a place you don’t even know yet.

Reading your stories has at least given me perspective and solidarity. Life can be a heavy load but reading through some of these posts makes it feel a little lighter.

Integral blinds beaten up

So unfortunately our door has these integral blinds that got messed up. It’s not the magnets that are the issue, it’s the blinds that are broken/tangled now on the inside.

Has anyone had this issue and had it repaired? How much did it cost you? I’m guessing this isn’t something I could easily fix myself at this point.

Wasp nest- should we get a professional to remove?

Made the unfortunate discovery of this wasp nest under our upper balcony. Saw a bunch buzzing around in the evening and decided to investigate today. It’s a bit close to our balcony door, and our back door and we have a toddler that loves to go outside. I’ve never dealt with a wasp nest before, should we just get professionals to take care of it?

Hawrelak Park

Ton of empty parking spots all around the park mere feet away and you still get people parking like this? I saw 4 or 5 cars parked the same way.

What is this phenomenon of stupidity and entitlement?

Adaptogenic mocktails?

Looking to stop drinking alcohol in favour for more natural and healthy options to relax. I don’t like weed or edibles and I’m a bit tired of drinking tea.

I’ve read about adaptogenic mocktails and wondering if anyone in the city knows the best place to find some different options?

Whoever came up with the plastic bag in the car window hack…

Thank you. It actually worked.

I have a baby that hates his car seat. I will make sure he is changed, fed, burped, etc before every car trip and he still will start crying. Well, then I saw a little tik tok hack where you hang an empty plastic bag near the window and slightly have it rolled down so that it rustles in the wind and distracts baby.

Worked like a charm. Baby immediately was interested and then fell asleep and I could roll the window back up. Now I just hope he doesn’t get bored of it 😅

Stop buying young kids electric scooters

Your 10 year old does not know how to ride it responsibly. They are illegal to ride on public property. Many don’t wear helmets. Going 15-20km down a sidewalk almost getting hit by a car through crosswalks.

Stop buying your kids illegal things just cause their friends have them. I am sure you don’t want to get a call one day that your child has a head injury or was hit by a car and is going into the hospital knowing you bought them the very thing that lead to it.

I swear almost every kid in my neighbourhood has one at this point.

How to get toddler down for a nap while also watching after newborn?

My toddler is 26 months old and my baby is 7 weeks. My toddler is pretty dependent on me or my husband to put him down for a nap including us being there until he falls asleep. It never really was an issue until now.

My husband went back to work today and I’m unsure of how I’ll be able to put my toddler down for his nap while also watching after the 7 week old by myself successfully.

Any tips or advice?

Soooo at what point will the city possibly bring back aerial spraying for mosquitoes?

Or any other methods? I know I heard that they still spray the ditches and such but is there any news that they will ramp up efforts to get rid of them?

Summer has just begun and we all know how out of control they are and it will just get worse from here.

The mosquitoes are out with a vengeance

Decided to go out for a neighbourhood walk this afternoon after the rain had stopped.

Regretted almost immediately. Swarms of bloodsuckers everywhere. If you do go out, be prepared, cause I was not.

Disagreement with potty training

To preface some info, our toddler is 25 months and we have a 1 month old newborn. My husband has a high demanding job that’s starting in July and he insisted on starting potty training before he goes back to work so he can be of help. He skimmed through the “Oh Crap” potty training book and went for it.

The problem is that I never wanted to start potty training our son at this time, I am having a very hard time postpartum mentally and emotionally and he knows that. I told him I wasn’t ready but he insisted he will do everything on his own.

It’s been 4 days so far and our son is doing okay with it (with accidents of course and some tantrums). However, I feel like I’ve been forced into this whole thing and now I’m struggling with juggling more on top of taking care of myself and our newborn, and toddler.

My husband of course does have other work duties to attend to so I am helping with potty training but I feel some resentment with not being listened to, also just ill equipped to help with potty training.

Any words of encouragement to get past this now that we are in the potty training situation?

My MIL is currently waiting to get brain shunt surgery in Edmonton. For the second time now the surgery has been cancelled the day of because of an emergency surgery. She has had the surgery scheduled since January.

Has anyone else been dealing with multiple cancellations of their surgery in the province? Anything that can be done besides hope they don’t keep cancelling it?
