the day I became The Sugar Girl Eats Love (まつざか さとう)

It makes me bitter when someone said "you have an unhealthy obsession with the predator character." Not only is it gaslighting to call the CSA victim the "predator character" but even that false accusation is why I relate to her. It's not your projected perversion that made me become her. It's the awful taste in my mouth I got from my own exploitation. It's the way I see through so many empty words of false promises. It's the way I can still feel my abusers hands wrapped around my neck. Or the throbbing of my head from being hit so hard I could no longer hear. Or how the room spins when I think about all the awful things I've experienced that I can't even fully remember.

I relate to her only finding comfort in smth smol & safe. Smth that couldn't hurt her they way they did. How all she wants is to protect that comfort, not corrupt it. How her eyes widen like the ocean when she thinks of the one she loves. How her hands trembles when she remembers what she's done to survive. How no matter how empty her jar is, somehow she still hasn't broken completely

I understand what ppl are seeing when they say stuff like this. The story of Happy Sugar Life is about the cycle of abuse & Satou does fall a bit into that cycle *at first* before she realized she was treating Shio like a pet & not a person. But not only was there legit character development but if this isn't genuine love, idk what is 🥀

re: Matsuzaka Satō 松坂砂糖 is a CSA victim

Despite someone just falsely calling this "surface level loli," one thing I love about Happy Sugar Life & Kagisora's work is there's so many layers. It's the oneeloli yuri onion that never stops peeling. Even if you don't like it's content, calling it "surface level" as if it's some Dragon Maid fan service is delusional because there's so much hidden meanings you don't realize until months/years later.

I've watched the anime 3 times, read the manga almost twice & somehow I still missed this. Both u/Descowo & I pointed out the connection to the aunt's locked room & how there's some weird parallel between that one & the locked door in Satou's apt.

I talked about how it's like they both have locked away their shame, the parts of themselves they don't want anyone else to see. Desco mentioned how it clear that Satou is having flashbacks when the police try to open up that very same room, >!confirming the CSA by the aunt + her men!<.

Desco was right.

Look at these 4 panels vry carefully. When I first skimmed this, I naturally assumed she's talking about the boys from her school--she's not. Look at the context--the boys only had missing eyes where this is once again painted in black. >!Three men stand over her which would be a rather unusual situation even for a HS sl*t. !<With the added context that she's having this flashback at the same time she's opening the locked room which mimics the aunt's >!molestation room!<

>This is a flashback to Satou being >!molested !<by at least 3 men simultaneously as a child, her aunt let this happen (maybe she even got paid for it, how does she pay the landlord after all?)

Happy Sugar Life is literally about the consumption of kids

Sugar. Salt. Pepper. (Shouko backwards) Sweetness. Bitterness. What's this taste in my mouth?

We all know sugary sweets is a, if not the, main theme of Happī Shugā Raifu. But why?
Some of the obvious surface level discussions are it's part of the duality & contradictions of HSL. It's sweet on the surface but bitter, dark & horrifying on the inside (much like Satō's childhood.)

>Another analysis is Satou's childhood was so traumatic & she was taught the wrong idea of love that she now fails to understand her own emotions. She conflates sexual abuse with love before Shio so ofc she doesn't understand happiness or sadness; from right or wrong. She describes her feelings as flavors because that's the only way she understands them partly due to her aunt.

>Because auntie taught her that love has many flavors & they're all as good as the rest.

Both these interpretations are correct. Like I said in the past a lot of the metaphors have multiple meanings, not just one. However, in the HSR fanbook (above) Kagisora drops the fact to us ignorant westerners that their last names are Japanese meat brands. Which is a contradiction to the sugar sweets & *almost* don't match..

But we constantly see a repetitive theme of not just sweets but eating & consumption ‼️

It reminds me of this scene from the infamous Spirited Away

Asahi \"I'm going to eat you, Matsusaka.\" (notice the fork)

Sugar Girl Eats Love. Boy Eater.
The literal Japanese translation of chapter 1 is “The Sugar Girl Feeds on/Consumes Love.” The verb 食む (hamu) is interesting because it isn't merely the ordinary “eat” (食べる / taberu). It can mean to eat/feed on/consume, and can have a somewhat literary or figurative quality. The official English localization renders it “The Sugar Girl Eats Up Love.”

Kagisora repeatedly describes Satō through consumption verbs:

>Satō has an appetite for love and people become the objects through which she attempts to satisfy it.

When the anime adaptation was announced in March 2018, Kagisora's comment was essentially that she wanted to watch Satō and Shio come alive on screen while eating meat:

>「さとうやしおが画面の向こうで動き出すのを、お肉を食べながら一視聴者として見守りたいと思います。」

“I think I'll watch Satō and Shio moving on the other side of the screen as an ordinary viewer while eating meat.”

It's not just about sugary sweets. It's about the consumption of people. Now I'm going to diverge from strictly canon stuff into my own interpretation. It's about the commodification of kids.

As someone who's talked about prison abolition, a point I've heard a handful of times is "fixing capitalism might stop crimes of poverty but it won't stop pedophilia." While there is a truth to this I would actually heavily pushback. Capitalism directly feeds the exploitation & trafficking of minors. "WHY IS THERE MAOIST TALK IN MY YURI!??" actually Happy Sugar Life is filled to the brim with critiques on capitalism especially the kind found in modern Japanese culture but that's such a powerful discussion we're gonna save that one for later.

Capitalism is the commodification of human experiences. We commodify love. We commodify connection. We even commodify 3rd spaces so you can't even exist for free. Capitalism creates a global power imbalance that creates exploitation in "3rd world" countries that are having their resources extracted from them while receiving little in return. The rich countries/citizens have the economic power to pay at-risk women to exploit, sell, etc. their own children. (How is this about Happy Sugar Life?) Well we know auntie SA's Satou. We know auntie has men over her apt who she services & while she isn't doing this strictly for money (nor is it even her main motivation) as this is kinda her thing she does end up giving Satou *an insane amount of money* in which you have to ask where did that come from.

\"Auntie, this candy is hard to eat!\"

\"you were only a dessert.\"

Happy Sugar Life in the 1st few chapters immediately establishes adults preying on children & comparing that experience to consumption. This one is more obvious, especially with the sweets reference. But then I noticed consumption is hidden throughout the entire fucking series!???

\"What should I make for dinner tonight?\"

I saved this panel as a joke but the more I read it the more I can't unsee it. Okay I'm starting to feel a little insane but really think about it: she asks "What should I make for dinner tonight?" and immediately following is the Shio poster, as if it's the universe continuing the conversation for her. Remember Kagisora rarely writes random nonsense words. She's much like Aaron Sorkin where no word is wasted, so much of what she says had meaning even if it's subtle. The poster quite literally says "salted meat."

>Let's go back: “I think I'll watch Satō and Shio moving on the other side of the screen as an ordinary viewer while eating meat.”

You know damn well I'm not pulling this from my ass. And as uncomfortable as this makes us, Satou is The Sugar Girl Eats Love. She was exploited by so many people in her life from her aunt to the men around her who used her for her body whiling filling her jar with empty meaningless words. So ofc this behavior is something she reflected onto Shio at first before her character development. On top of that the meat brand Kōbe is actually top-shelf beef with strict standards in order to qualify as the "God's door" of meats. She was going to "consume" Shio in the way that she has been consumed. After all, she's waiting at home to greet her. It would be a quick meal.

The commodification of all of our lived experiences directly fuels the cycle of abuse (as seen in Yuuna's backstory) & CSA. We see it in marketing like in Cuties. We see it in clothing brands of children. We see it in music, on Disney, Nickelodeon. The reality is pedophilia pays--a lot. The market for these things are directly created by capitalism.

The teacher's perverted desires may not stem directly from capitalism. But the normalization & desensitization to these things are created by market forces.

>People dare to call Happy Sugar Life "pedo slop" but the more I think about the stories it tells the more I can't help but think it's actually calling out the commodification of children that turns people into meat eaters. It's a force as powerful as auntie's or imperial manager's abuse.

Update: forgot this part, to add to the analysis in the 1st few drafts of The Sugar Girl Eats Love--Kagisora was planning to make a story about carnivorous/predatory animals. In that initial draft, Satou & Shio still existed (because they're true lovers in every universe) but Shio was a black lion & Satou is a bear

She still made a story about carnivorous predator animals, she just made them look human

TW: Satō Matsuzaka is a CSA victim (& Shio was harm reduction)

Okay an interesting part about Happy Sugar Life, this is a theme readers either (A) immediately get or (B) flies right over their head but the context clues make it soo obvious. The base understanding of Satou's childhood is that her Aunt gave her body to any man who asked & did anything they wanted no matter how humiliating, degrading, filthy, harmful, etc. Satou clearly sees this happen, however as far as we know they go in the other room. She's depicted as hearing them & on the surface this is all it suggests.

However it immediately pans over to the iconic candy jar. Now like many things Kagisora does there's often duel/multimeanings. The candy doesn't always mean this, necessarily. But in this context, in this scene, she eats the candy while the aunts having sex in the next room </3
(keep in mind this anime almost got called Sugar Girl Eats Love)

https://preview.redd.it/44wyk7z6kwih1.png?width=639&format=png&auto=webp&s=82310d62723f207977f9be26cab8cb820863d969

"Hard Candy" has been a codeword for either CSA/CSAM & other related material for as long as I was a child. Konpeitō is a hard candy. This choice was deliberate.

Still skeptical? The manga actually makes this so much more clear when you look at the bath scene with the aunt vs the bath scene with r/SatouShio

open two books:

  1. with Satou & Shio it's cute, wholesome; maybe a lil flirty but nothing rlly weird, filthy or bad
  2. flashback to the aunt bathing Satou & clearly has that famous dissociative look on her face -- she looks the saddest she's ever been. Then the shower then turns to rain drops....

This is another one of Kagisora's mirrors/parallel narratives

https://preview.redd.it/bu5sz8xfjwih1.png?width=709&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f927c3e8c84ab3dfb58f995cae9f001e0b02367

Towards the end of Happy Sugar Life, while auntie is helping them escape she asks what they do in the bath? "Oh... that's it?" As if she was disappointed???? 😭😭 either because

>with Satous hypersexual history w/ men she thought she would do the same
or
auntie did way more to Satou during bathtime... because she wanted to give her "love"

There's even more evidence if you know where to look. What happened to Satou's blue bear? One of the men auntie serviced torn it to shreds, this has to be a metaphor. If she's willing to let men destroy Satou's favorite belonging, what would she let them do to Satou? After all "Matsuzaka Sato's love was awakened by a certain aunt" (that 1st chapter we see Satou sleeping with any boy which is what this seems to be referring to & CSA victims historically either become "asexual"/celibate or they become hypersexual either to cope or as consequence.)
Satou seems to be a mix of both of these, tbh

The anger Satou holds for her aunt doesn't get explained by "I heard her fucking twice" or even "auntie said I should fuck a bunch of men to experience love." I think we all know what would cause this level of anger, why she needed to get a 2nd apartment (killing the painter) because she knows if Shio was left alone in that filthy apartment, she too would be tainted. It's why she immediately steps in front of Shio w/ the aunt to protect her

>No one does that simply bc "they were accidently taught the wrong idea of love."

\"IF YOU WON'T TOUCH ME-\"

It's not really a controversial statement since we nearly see Taiyou becoming victim to this same abuse. And we see the consequences of that. I always felt weird how Satou seemed to have a soft spot for Taiyou, she wouldn't let him ever get his filthy hands on Shio. But she was gentler with him compared to other antagonists on the show. Because she sees he's also a victim (makes you wonder why there's a yellow macaron on Satou's bag, all victims of adults)

But Satou didn't become Taiyou & in a worse timeline she could of. You see her face reflect the expressions of her aunt during the fight with Shio (above) for a second she was becoming her. Maybe it wasn't sexual but the selfish need for control & not thinking of the consequences to the other was briefly taking over

thinly vailed evidence that Satou may not be asexual and/or could refer to her new murder instincts

Now, the scene with the evil manger who hurts Taiyo: Satou say she's "restrained herself"
I believe this is probably another double meaning--sometimes the candy jar means hard candy & other times it means someone's selflove or her true spiritual love for Shio. There's different flavors of love, after all, isn't there?

But Taiyou didn't restrain himself. "If you won't touch me, then I will--" You should've restrained yourself, like I did. It really makes you think, doesn't it? 🤔

https://preview.redd.it/eh2nj8g8mwih1.png?width=780&format=png&auto=webp&s=39097a91fd66cf1832add3505046fe47fc326366

Which is probably the point because there's so many ways to interprete it because of the ambiguity, high art. However if she depicted these things in the realm of Gushing Over Magical Girls *without changing the rest of the story* I doubt Square Enix woulda published it

>But if there's one thing I can say for certain, it's that Satou is a victim

https://preview.redd.it/me6xboyiqwih1.png?width=700&format=png&auto=webp&s=6c3aa0e5ba108333b2b9f22154dfb730c93ca80d

Update: I just realized Tomiyaki Kagisora Shakespearean writing strike again (Shakespeare used to repeat words 3 times when he wanted to emphasize a point to the audience) and this is a romance tragedy after all

"IF YOU WON'T TOUCH ME-" Taiyou essentially says to Shio before threatening to touch her
"IF YOU WON'T TOUCH ME-" Satou thinks (important distinction) while making a face looking like her aunts (above)
"IF YOU WON'T TOUCH ME-" (not depicted) the Aunt most likely said this to Satou. Which is why it looks like she's having a flashback, the darkness like when you see dark covering her aunt's face in her memories or w/ Shio's mom above to represent the trauma & dissociation. If Satou wouldn't touch her, then she will.

notice the direction of the blood splatter

Update 2.0: thanks to Desco for pointing this out. But they found another mirror/parrallel which points to the filth of the CSA. As the same room in auntie's apartment, that would've been the painter's room in Satou's, had the same lock; the same filthy smell tainting the apartment. And the sex filth splatters on the wall like blood

ハッピーシュガーライフ

\"this is /hard/ to eat.\" 🥀

restarting my 21yr Neopets acc based on my favorite anime/hyperfixation

Soo happy I finally got my acc back after so many years <3 Satou Matsuzaka's childhood was robbed from her & I feel like she was partly living vicariously through Shio Koube. So it makes sense that I'm reliving the peak of my childhood, which is also ironic because 21 years ago is when I was being groomed into horrible filthy things much like Satō with her aunt which would destroy my innocence </3 (prolly why my activity suddenly stopped on Neopets that year)

I'm happy w/ how much I've grown my account, I'm now a (40) millionaire on Neopets, my childhood self could only dream!! The 1st pic is my Dress to Impress Satou/Shio so sadly I'm not even close to finishing it bc most of them are gacha p2p items that aren't even in NC shop rn 🥀

Tomiyaki Kagisora on naming her characters: an in-depth review

(this will be long but I promise if you read it, it'll be one of the most mind-blowing analysis of Happy Sugar Life you've ever read from Satou herself) Okay, let's get the obvious part outta the way which started this discussion in our private Black Salt Cage discord. We all know that the names of Happy Sugar Life characters are super important & have deep meaning & purpose. Here's the more obvious ones:

>砂糖 Satō = "sugar"
Shio = "salt"
太陽 Taiyō = "sun" (I hate this but it makes sense why he's represented as yellow)
朝日 Asahi = "morning/rising sun"
尚子 Shōko = "evidence/proof" (no way it's random my guy)

Now forgive me as I'm not Japanese & barely a weeb in my old age. But the more I learn Japanese & the meaning behind Kanji symbols, my mind starts to unravel in the best way. Apologies if I'm stereotyping but I read somewhere (probably a blurb in Dragon Maid) that Japanese people love their puns, especially in manga. I've seen Kagisora write intentional wording that has duel meanings that I believe get distorted in translations & in the anime. (ie. when Satou says "I restrained myself" referring to Shio towards the manager: I believe she meant she restrained herself at work AND restrained herself in someway towards Shio)

Let's test this theory: Kagisora & the duel/multi meanings of Japanese words

Shio, salt, however...

  • The name can also be represented in various kanji forms, with different meanings depending on the characters used. Common kanji for "Shio" include:
    • 志保 (meaning "to aspire" and "protection")
    • 潮 (meaning "tide")

protection *can't be a coincidence* and it's insane I've never seen someone point this out
even tide, she literally calls herself Satou's water!?? (salt + water or am I starting to get delulu?) 😭

In a fanbook Kagisora says many of their last names are Japanese meat brand names. I don't fully understand this, if there's a meaning at all. But she always refers to Satou as like "boy eater" or "sugar girl eats love" so I wonder if this is related? Or maybe just a bad translation, however:

The name "Kobe" in Japanese (神戸) translates to "divine door" or "god's door."

Shio is countlessly referred to as an angel & depicted as one in the artwork

(update: not a bad translation, the beef names are to expand the theme of ingredients to match the sugar theme & possibly "the beef represents commodification/consumption of people" via eating references)

Am I cooking, chat? Because we're just getting started. Because for the life of me, I couldn't remember Shio's dads name. What does *his* name mean?
Shio's dad doesn't have a name. This is clearly intentional. The only significant characters that don't have names are: him, the aunt & the painter. But EVEN the painter is referred to as The Painter. There is no such name for Shio's dad, only his last name he carries Kobe

okay so 1st the aunt: she doesn't have an official name, however she is almost affectionally referred to as "auntie" at some point I believe. Which is more than just saying _____ Matsuzaka. Or "Satou's aunt" but no that's auntie. There's no equivalent for Shio's dad.

Wait there's more---this fucking onion never stops peeling. Sometimes I wanna think we're all crazy for over-analyzing just a cute lil anime. No, we're fucking not. In Japanese he isn't just The Painter, he's referred to as Gaka. In Japanese this has a duel meaning of a painter or an artist (why we see both.) That's not the interesting part. There is a homophone for this word

>Meaning and Character Breakdown
画 (Ga): Picture, drawing, or painting.
架 (Ka): Rack, stand, frame, or support.
Putting them together literally translates to "painting stand." Because it sounds exactly like 画家 (Gaka - Painter), it is a homophone.

Gaka, when spelt slightly differently, so instead of 画家 (gaka - painter) when it's 画架 it means (gaka - easel)

Bro... the easel murder is fucking intentional. I'm so done. Overanalyze everything.
The Painter was killed by his own name (phonetically)

I believe TK leans towards some version of rehabilitation. She doesn't see flawed people like Satou, Taiyou or even auntie as irredeemable. (Even the aunt, as clearly evil as she is, gets a bit of a redemption arch at the end of the manga) But clearly it's ______ Kobe because some people are so evil, they're not redeemable. You cannot save them (broken jar)

He is so unredeemable, so unimportant, that he doesn't even deserve a name, other than the devil himself or akuma (悪魔). Kagisora clearly puts as much thought into names as she does removing them. 🤯

my fav Happy Sugar Life fanart + Tomiyaki Kagisora art duo

This is the only fanart I've personally witnessed that mimics the original Satoushio shown to us in the official Happy Sugar Life Fanbook: the one where they're the same age (but there's still a size difference.) The official art is so important because (1) it clarifies that it was *always* a yuri. It was a yuri before it was a psychological horror. (And I've been gaslit so many times on Tiktok & etc. that "I don't understand HSL if I think it's a toxic yuri"--bruh)

it also shows us that Satoushio's bond is eternal, they would love each other in every universe... it wasn't based on age nor is that what Satou was ultimately attracted to. That's just her soulmate.

But I love the original design sm. I think the change was appropriate & tbh prolly made a better story, with deeper meaning & social commentary. However the original Satoushio could is the *most* like my partner & I. (bc tbh I'm nonviolent but some stalkers wanna test that theory 💀) The way Shio is the mastermind. The way Satou is more bubbly, girly & a bit of a empty headed bimbo. These 2 could've been so great together, the power dynamic is completely reversed. Because they love each other, every version, they love the whole of them.
What's your favorite fanart or official art??

I'm literally the real life Satou!??

NGL being banned from the HSL Reddit because I have an evil stalker Alex Hannan who created a smear campaign because I rejected them (literally the teacher) is wild. Because y'all are fake fans when in one breath you say you wish SatouShio coulda had a better ending but when you meet someone who's lived experiances, trauma & abuse forged identity matches Satou Matsuzaka almost exactly—you hate her. Which makes sense bc as popular as Satou was she had so many ppl rooting against her/them: the teacher, Taiyou, the painter, the jealous co-worker...

You are literally the villains the show warns about. But it's okay, as long as I have my Shio I can handle anything 👁
