Train Ride to End Polio - 2026

Every year around World Polio Day (a day early this year on Friday 23rd October 2026), Rotarians from all over Sydney embark on a marathon effort to visit every station in Sydney in one day, known as the Train Ride to End Polio. This is in an effort to raise funds to eradicate polio.

It used to be that trains were part of the polio problem, as they gave the poliovirus the perfect way to rapidly spread far and wide. Then, in 2001, trains became part of the solution with mass vaccination drives centred at Railway stations. Since 2018, there has been a Train Ride to End Polio in the Sydney Metropolitan area to raise money for the Rotary Foundation's END POLIO NOW Campaign. The Sydney events have raised over $880,000 to date. Since 1979 the Rotary Foundation has been working towards eradicating polio. In 1988 Rotary and the World Health Organisation launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. In 1988 there were 350,000 cases in 125 countries. In 2026 we are down to two countries (Afganistan and Pakistan) with only 146 cases year to date.

A team of 14 Rotarians from all over Sydney, led by Beecroft Rotary, will start at Cronulla at 04:33 and work their way through the network, ending at Tallawong at 22:33. We are not aiming for the record. Our goal is to meet Rotarians and dignitaries from all over Sydney to get their support for this campaign. In 2025 we met up with around 400 people throughout the day.

But why should people in Australia care? We have been free of Polio since 2001. Well, Polio is still only a flight away. There was a minor outbreak in PNG last year, and Polio was detected in Perth's water in May this year. We need to get to zero cases to eradicate the disease for good. If we stopped our efforts today, it would spread and return to Australia within a decade.

Transport for NSW have been very supportive of this campaign, and I would just like to express my gratitude. Also, Brothers Ben Cafe in Petersham have been supporting us via breakfast.

If you wish to support (and get a tax deduction), please go to:

How does one log hours and report projects in My Rotary?

It is my first time being Secretary. I have been asked to keep a log of volunteer hours for every project. I got told there is a way to log our club's activities into MyRotary.

I have been looking all over the site and cannot find how to log my club's hours and projects.

Could someone please give me an idiot's guide to logging hours please.

List number levels not connecting. How do I connect them?

I am working on a report. The top two levels are connecting well

  1. Chapter title

1.1 Section Title

1.2 next section title

  1. the second chapter.

2.1 more section

but then the problems begin. If I wanted to put in a third level section, one would expect it to be 2.1.1, instead it just shows as 1. I adjusted it to third level, and it came up as 1.1.1, despite being after 2.1. How does one explain to word that this should be a third level connected to the previous?

Update: I found a work around. Thank you for all of your advice

Circle Bracket for a 48-team world cup, 8 groups of 6, AU Finals System

Circle Backet with the Australian Finals System

Key:

  • Round of 24 games with 2 characters:
    • Number indicates rank in group. Letter indicates which group they are from.
    • For example, 1A = 1st in Group A
  • Round of 16 onwards with 4 characters:
    • W = winner of
    • L = loser of.
    • For example. W122 = Winner of match 122, which was 2A vs 3B
    • L130 G/H = Loser of match 130, which was 1G vs 1H

Concept:

  • Eight groups of six teams.
  • Top 3 teams advance to the knockout phase.
  • The group winners get two advantages.
    • Group Winners get a second chance if they lose their Round of 24 game.
    • Both Group Winners get a faster path to the final. The winner of 1st vs 1st game goes straight to the quarter final. The loser to the Round of 12.
  • 2nd vs 3rd is a standard bracket, meeting the loser of the 1st vs 1st in the Round of 12.

Benefits:

  • Teams that work hard in the group stage get rewarded and have a second chance.
  • The earliest that a team can meet another team from their own group is the Semi Final.
  • With 6 teams in the groups, there will be some top end clashes in the group stage.
  • The last game will have something as the top end are fighting for the top spot over 2nd and 3rd. The bottom half are fighting to get 3rd. Even if a team is mathematically eliminated, they will be up against another who is still fighting to maintain or gain a spot.
  • Top end clash at the first round of the knockout.

How would you explain to a four year old what Morocco is all about?

I am Australian. During the World Cup every morning we would put on the game while we had breakfast and got ready for the day. Each morning I would ask my kids which team to cheer for (red team, blue team, yellow team, ect). I would also tell them a bit about each country. My issue is that I'd go too deep into detail and only limited facts got through.

Switzerland: they are the red team make chocolate and clocks. They have a big train tunnel. That is all that my 4 year old got.

A couple days later Morocco was playing. "Red team! They make chocolate!"... no mate, that is the other red team. We had Moroccan chicken a couple nights earlier. The issue is that my son then thought all chickens come from Morocco. I'm trying to explain to him things that are uniquely Moroccan, and not North African or generic.

If you had to explain to a 4 year old in Australia Morocco in a few words, what would you say?

Translation request for 2030 Men's FIFA World Cup

Names of Stadiums

For context, I am an Australian who has a very basic understanding of Morocco. I do not claim to be an expert on culture or languages, hence why I am requesting the assistance of you fine people.

I like to do fantasy schedules for football tournaments. I am currently engaged in a discussion on the virtues of an 8 group of 6 World Cup, and the Australian finals system. To make this work cleanly, I need 24 stadiums (hence a couple of extra stadiums that are not going to be used in the real 2030 world cup). I am creating a series of posters with all the games scheduled, and a draw of the countries I think will qualify. I will post the finalised poster later. For all games, I am including the names of the stadiums in the local Latin script (Castilian, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician, Basque, French), Arabic, and Berber.

  1. If you see the names of your stadiums in a Latin script, would you prefer it in English, French, or something else? For example, I have Stade as opposed to Stadium. Would you prefer to see Stade de Marrakech or Marrakesh Stadium? Also the names of cities, hence the two spellings of Marrakesh. Fez is another one that is different in English and French.
  2. I do not speak Arabic, but one of my colleagues said it looked okay. I just want to confirm if it is correct or not.
  3. The Berber translation is Google Translate later tested in AI. Is it even accurate?
  4. Would Moroccans prefer Arabic then Berber or Berber then Arabic?

Below is a sample of the Finals. The Australian finals system has a second chance aspect to it:

  • Round of 24
    • Qualifying Final: Group winners vs group winners. Winner goes straight to the quarter final. The loser goes to the round of 12.
    • Elimination finals: 2nd in group vs 3rd in group. Winner to Round of 16. Loser goes home.
  • Round of 16
    • Winners of Elimination finals play off, sudden death
  • Round of 12:
    • Winners of Round of 16 host the loser of Qualifying finals
  • Quarter Finals
    • Winner of Qualifying Finals host the winner of Round of 12
  • Semi Final, Bronze, and Finals are as per normal.
  • Teams are separated from the other teams from the group stage up until the Semi Final.
  • During the group stage, teams are fighting for the top of group as to guarantee a second chance and a shorter path to the final. Teams lower down are fighting for the 2nd and 3rd spots.

What if the World Cup was 8 groups of six teams and used the Australian Finals system.

The primary discussion is around the merits of the Australian Finals system and eight groups of six teams. I know that Australia is not eligible to host until 2046, but it is still fun to dream.

Groups:

These are the teams that qualified for the 2026 Men's FIFA World Cup.

  • Pot 1: Hosts and Top 6 (Australia in A1, and Aotearoa in C1)
  • Pot 2: 7th to 14th highest ranked nations
  • Pot 3: AFC
  • Pot 4: CAF
  • Pot 5: CONCACAF and CONMEBOL
  • Pot 6: UEFA

After teams were in pots, I rolled dice to determine the draw. Each group may only have two teams from a confederation. This primarily impacts UEFA (2 in all groups) and CONMEBOL. The above is random but have fun making your own draw. I drew up a group stage over 5 match days, then staggered it for each group to bring up different pairings at every match day. This means that in most groups there will be a top-level clash in the group stage. Group F has Brazil vs Netherlands.

Tournament Rules:

  • Each team has a squad of 26 players (three of which are goal keepers)
  • Every player has to start in at least 1 group stage game.
    • If all 26 players do not start in at least one game, then they fail to qualify for the knockout phase.
  • No player may start in more than 3 group stage games.
    • The idea is to rest players and to plan out a strategy for the 5 games.
    • If a player starts in a 4th game, they are instantly red carded.
    • No limit on how many games a player can substitute on. Theoretically, a player can sub on in up to 4 group stage games (as long as they start in the other).
  • Up to 4 substitutions per group stage game.
    • 2 additional subs can come on in extra time in the knockout phase.
    • If it goes to penalties, the 11 on the field are picked to strike/defend.
  • A 1-minute hydration break is at the referee's discretion. Seeing as it is mid-winter in June/July, it shouldn't be an issue for most games.
  • Discipline:
    • 2 yellow cards in a single game is a red card.
    • 3 yellow cards in different games in the group stage is a red card. (to account for 5 games)
    • Players who are red carded are ineligible to play in the next game.
    • Yellow cards from the group stage do not carry over to the knockout phase.
    • 3 yellow cards in the knockout phase become a red card. (to enforce discipline in the up to 6 knockout games)
  • The last game of each group all starts at the same time to avoid collusion.
  • Ranking of Group Stage:
    1. Points: 3 Points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss.
    2. Goal difference
    3. Total Goals
    4. Discipline
    5. Head-to-Head (5th to avoid collusion)
    6. FIFA Ranking

The Australian Finals System:

The top 3 teams from each group advance. No need to worry about the ranking of other groups as it does not impact your game.

  • Round of 24:
    • Qualifying Finals: The top ranked teams from each group play each other. The winner goes straight to the quarter final. The loser goes to the Round of 12. This means a top-level blockbuster at the beginning of the group stage.
    • Elimination Finals: 2nd place vs 3rd place. Winner to Round of 16, Loser goes home.
  • Round of 16:
    • Winners of Elimination Finals play against each other.
  • Round of 12:
    • Winners of Round of 16 host the losers of the Qualifying finals.
  • Quater Finals
    • Winners of the Qualifying finals play the winners of the round of 12.
    • I have pathed the games so you cannot face anyone in your group again until the Semi Final.
  • Semi Final, Bronze Final, and Grand Final are as per usual.

The benefit of this is that in the last game of the group stage teams will be fighting for the top position. Being in the group stage is one thing, but being assured a second chance and a quicker path to the final is something else entirely.

Note on Flags:

I am Autistic, I like flags. I built these all in Illustrator.

  • I resized every flag to a 3:2 ratio.
  • I am particularly proud of my rebuilds of the Iranian, Saudi Arabian, Canadian, and Brazilian ones (100% vector).
  • I took shortcuts on Spain, Croatia, Egypt, Ecuador, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina (I will do a full rebuild in the future).
  • I redesigned the Australian one.
    • Navy and the Southern Cross
      • shared history, the night sky, the dream time.
      • Nine points on the Southern Cross for 6 states, NT, ACT, and the external territories.
    • Green - natural beauty, multiculturalism.
    • Gold - the desert, natural wealth, resources.
  • The Aotearoa (New Zealand) one was the top flag from the referendum. I honestly think it will be a future flag.
  • Morocco, I put in the Royal Flag as it contrasts better.
  • Jordan, I doubled the size of the star again for contrast reasons.
  • Haiti is not my design, but I did rebuild it in Illustrator. Credit to u/PixelJack79

Notes on Stadiums:

Primary discussion should be on the system of play, not the stadiums.

  • Gold - Existing and ready to go
  • Blue - Existing, but need to be expanded. Some would have legacy capacities after of around 30k after the tournament.
  • Green - Proposed or Under Construction.
    • Why Macquarie Point is so small is a mystery to me.
  • Red - Either a rebuild or newbuild
    • I know that Darwin is a bold choice, as is the Sunshine Coast. These would need new tenants and serious support from the A-League/NRL/ARU
    • Perth and Canberra, I could see some argument for rebuilding Perth Rectangular for modernisation reasons but would expect a legacy capacity of 30k.

Before anyone says "but cricket fields are too far away", it is no further than any stadium with an athletics track.

Notes on Distances.

In the Group Stage, Round of 24, and Round of 16, all teams are grouped to six stadiums. This is to minimise travel. Northern Australia, Eastern Australia, Southern Australia, and Aotearoa. Southern Australia has the most travel, Eastern Australia has the least. Considering the size of Australia, the distance is comparable, if not less than the US/MX/CA World Cup.

Note on the AFL and NRL

  • I have previously made a dummy schedule for the AFL and the NRL on the proviso of losing stadiums for 8 rounds. This would be more impactful to the AFL (4 of 19 teams keeping their home grounds), but the NRL would be fine (7 of 18 teams impacted).
  • This would be an opportunity to upgrade regional stadiums used in Gather Round/Magic Round. Convincing the AFL to give up Docklands would be the primary challenge.
  • Some proposed alternatives (AFL):
    • Hawthorn at York Park (Launceston)
    • West Coast and Freo at the WACA (with a lot of temporary seats)
    • Eureka Stadium (Ballarat) can have a Melbourne Team
    • Carlton at Princes Park
  • Some proposed alternatives (NRL)
    • Broncos at the Gabba
    • Raiders at Manuka
    • Rabbitohs at Parramatta
    • Roosters at the SCG
    • Perth Bears at Gosford or North Sydney

Why is it acceptable to have the flag of Iran on the pitch, but not Saudi Arabia?

At the Men's FIFA World Cup, the flags of the nations playing are laid on the pitch before the game. Why was the flag of Iran on the pitch instead of being raised like Saudi Arabia?

The flag of Saudi Arabia features the declaration of faith, the Shahada; "There is no god but Allah. Muhammad is the messenger of God." Due to this inclusion, the flag of Saudi Arabia is never at half mast. During the Saudi Arabian games, both flags were held in the air (not on the pitch).

The flag of Iran features the takbīr, Allāhu ʾAkbar, or God is the greatest, 11 times in each row (between the green and white band, and between the white and red band).

Consisting the religious significance of the takbīr, why would it be acceptable to have the flag of Iran on the pitch as opposed to being lifted in the air like the Saudi Arabian flag was?

I am not fan of the head-to-head ranking rule as it kills excitement in the last game

I am not fan of the head-to-head ranking rule as it kills excitement in the last game. I am going to use group D as an example. After two games we have the following:

2026 FIFA World Cup - Group D after 2 games

Due to the head-to-head taking precedence over goal difference, this group is already mostly determined. As things stand, there is nothing Australia could do to overtake America as if Australia wins against Paraguay and the Americans lose to Türkiye, they are both on 6 points. So the Americans will top the group regardless. Similarly Paraguay has already beaten Türkiye, so if Türkiye wins and Paraguay loses, they will both be on 3 points. So Türkiye is out regardless.

Knowing this, the last game doesn't matter to the Americans or the Turks. Türkiye could smash the Americans 31-0 and still lose the group. So why should either team put in a solid effort?

Australia and Paraguay are playing to get the security of second, but as both teams have 3 points, third and going through is likely regardless. The Australians have no incentive to win hard other than security. If Australia draws, they are guaranteed second regardless of what happens in the other game. So why should they put in a solid effort? If it is a draw, then Paraguay are pretty safe in third place getting through with 4 points. So why should either team put in and effort?

What I am expecting, something similar to West Germany vs Austria in 1982, also known as Anschluss or Disgrace of Gijón. This was when both teams spent 80 of the 90 minutes just passing the ball between each other with no attempt to attack as a 1-0 victory got both West Germany and Austria out of the group stage. The commentators walked out at half time. I assume the Americans will just rest their starting 11 and let the reserves get some caps. The reserves will not risk anything as they don't want discipline points deductions, and honestly why should they care? The Turks are already defeated; they might put in an effort for dignity's sake, but there is no reason to risk injury. The Australians will park the bus hoping for a draw. They might be inspired to counter, but there is not much point. The Paraguayans will just not want to lose, so if it is a nil all draw, then all is well.

Now if goal difference was a factor over head-to-head. Then things get interesting.

If Australia beats Paraguay, and America loses to Türkiye, then it goes to goal difference on who tops the group AND who comes third. Türkiye could make up their difference and overtake Paraguay, and by doing so dilutes the Americans. This would mean that with both games taking place simultaneously, the rankings of the group would shift dramatically all through the game.

They have changed the colour of the milk lids, and I'm freaking out

I have been led to believe that the system of milk lids was universal.

Dark Blue - full cream

Pink - skim

Light blue - something else? Low fat?

There are also red, purple, and yellow lids.

Today I went in to find the full cream now has white lids. I am worried that the system is about to collapse. I feel very uneasy about this. What next plain salt chips in a red packet?

Does anyone know what is going on? Are they introducing a new system?

What happened to the clown in Sydney Chinatown?

At the south end of Dixon Street, as the gates, there was a clown who would hula-hoop and pose for photos for $5. I honestly thought he was how horror films start. I haven't seen him in at least a couple of years. I tried looking online to see what happened to him. Does anyone know what happened to him?

What is the difference between Spiced Fruit Loaf and Fruit Toast?

I have noticed that the Spiced Fruit Loaf is missing from the bakery section in all the shops I have searched online, but in the bread aisle of my local, Fruit Toast Loaf has appeared? Is there a fundamental difference between these two? I am basically looking for a hot cross bun in a loaf toast format.

What I am looking for:

I am having a problem with masteries.

I am working my way through each civilisation completing their masteries. At the end of most games the first screen to pop up will say what achievements I completed and XP scores. Instead, I am getting something along the lines of Sorry, we are having issues with the server, we will get back to you at a later date...

Then I go to the mastery menu and it says that I haven't achieved the achievement. It is very odd. The other oddity is that lately the little menu in the bottom right of the home screen with daily challenges hasn't been there for a little while.

Does anyone know what is going on? Is this a me problem or a wider issue?

Also, does anyone know what those red numbers next to the various masteries are?
