Romans 10 9
Does “confess Him as Lord” literally mean that’s required for salvation?
I’m trying to understand Romans 10:9: “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Does “confess Him as Lord” mean that a person must verbally say those exact words in order to be saved? Or is Paul describing the outward expression of faith?
Because elsewhere Scripture seems to emphasize believing as the means by which we receive salvation and the new birth. For example, John 1:12–13 speaks of receiving Christ and believing in His name, and John 3:16 says whoever believes in Him has eternal life.
I’d especially appreciate perspectives that consider Romans 10:9 in its immediate context and alongside passages about believing for salvation.
