This photo reminds me of that iconic Dennis Rodman rebound dive. Alex Eala didn't win the point, but the determination to chase down a seemingly impossible ball says everything about her mindset. Effort like that is what builds champions.

TIL that the hometown of Dr. Jose Rizal, Calamba City, has an official sister city in Germany called Wilhelmsfeld.

(Idk if marami talaga tao pag Saturday/weekend or dahil sa bagong coffee shop, could be both)

sorry Sen. Lito Lapid I didn't know your game

Imagine, 20 years na silang pareho sa Senado pero mas marami pang legislative accomplishments si Sen. Lito Lapid kesa sa nakaupong Senate President ngayon. To think na we looked down on him before, calling him "stupid" and "unqualified."

TIL the NGCP is actually a 60/40 split between Filipino tycoons and the State Grid Corporation of China.

TLDR: The Philippine government owns the assets, but the NGCP (60% Filipino-owned, 40% Chinese-owned) has the exclusive right to operate and manage the power grid until 2034.

---

The ownership of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) is a public-private arrangement where the physical infrastructure, like the towers and transmission lines, remains the property of the Philippine government through TransCo. However, the operation and management of this grid were turned over to the NGCP in 2009 under a 25-year concession agreement.

The NGCP itself is a private consortium led by Filipino investors Henry Sy Jr. and Robert Coyiuto Jr., who hold a combined 60% stake via Synergy Grid & Development Phils., Inc. The remaining 40% is held by the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), which serves as the consortium’s technical partner. This specific breakdown often sparks legislative debate regarding national security and foreign influence over the country’s energy backbone.

TIL that when the ICC says "there is no public warrant," it usually means the warrant is already signed and just sitting in a secret vault.

TL;DR: That’s why when the media says "there is no public warrant," it usually means the court is just keeping its cards close to its chest. They use the word "public" as a legal shield so they don't have to confirm an investigation is active, even if the paperwork is already signed and sitting in a vault.

---

This is exactly what happened with Senator Bato dela Rosa, and it’s why the news cycle was so confusing for a while.

Basically, the ICC often issues warrants "under seal." Think of it like a legal "stealth mode." Judges sign the paperwork and the prosecutors have the warrant in hand, but it’s kept strictly confidential. The logic is simple: if you’re a high-profile official and you find out there’s a warrant for your arrest, you’re probably going to hide, flee the country, or start "cleaning up" evidence. By keeping it under seal, the court tries to keep the element of surprise on their side.

>Under Seal (Not Public): A secret warrant known only to the ICC judges, the Prosecutor’s office, and specific law enforcement agencies like Interpol. It is kept private to prevent a suspect from fleeing or tampering with witnesses before they can be caught.

>Unsealed (Public): An official notice shared with the media and the general public. Once unsealed, everyone—from international airports to foreign governments—is officially put on notice to help find and surrender the suspect.

This is why everyone, including the ICC themselves, kept saying there was no public warrant for Bato. They weren't lying, they were just being incredibly careful with their wording. In the world of international law, if a document is sealed, it legally doesn't exist for public discussion. It’s a "neither confirm nor deny" situation that keeps the suspect in the dark while the gears of justice are already turning.

The not so secret finally came out yesterday, May 11, 2026, when the ICC unsealed the warrant. We now know the warrant was actually signed way back in November 2025. It sat in a secure file for six months while the world wondered if anything was happening. Now that it’s public, that "stealth mode" is over, and it’s become a full-blown international standoff. It’s a pretty wild reminder that just because a government or a court says there’s no "public" record of something, it doesn't mean the paperwork isn't already sitting on a desk somewhere waiting for the right time to be revealed.

I’ve been diving into the National Internal Revenue Code and the recent CREATE MORE Act (2025) for a paper, and it’s wild how different the tax system looks once you hit a certain level of wealth. While most of us are stuck with fixed withholding taxes, the ultra-wealthy use sophisticated legal structures to keep their billions intact.

How they do it?

1. The "Buy, Borrow, Die" Strategy

This is the ultimate move for billionaires like Manny Villar or Enrique Razon, whose wealth is tied up in massive stock holdings (like Vista Land or ICTSI).

  • The Problem: If they sell ₱500M in shares to fund a project, they get hit with a 15% Capital Gains Tax (or the new adjusted rates under CMEPA).
  • The Move: They don’t sell. They use their shares as collateral to take out a multi-million peso loan from a bank (like BDO or BPI).
  • The Result: Since loan proceeds aren't considered "income," they are tax-free. They get the cash they need, keep their ownership of the company, and let the asset value grow to cover the interest.

2. The Power of "Holding Companies"

Notice how the Ayala Family or the Sy Siblings don’t technically "own" their malls or banks directly? It’s all filtered through massive holding firms like Ayala Corporation or SM Investments (SMIC).

  • The Advantage: Under the CREATE MORE Law, corporate tax rates for certain activities can be as low as 20%.
  • Lifestyle Integration: When a billionaire travels for "business" or uses a luxury van, those are often filed as deductible business expenses. This lowers the company's taxable profit, effectively allowing them to live a high-end lifestyle using "pre-tax" pesos, whereas we have to buy everything with "after-tax" money.

3. Strategic Philanthropy (The Foundation Loophole) (more like money laundering lol)

Every major tycoon has a foundation (e.g., Tan Yan Kee Foundation for Lucio Tan, or Metrobank Foundation for the Ty family).

  • The Move: Donations to "Accredited Non-Profit Organizations" are 100% tax-deductible.
  • The Result: By moving money into their own foundations, they drastically reduce their personal or corporate taxable income. The money stays within their sphere of influence, funds their CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) goals, and generates massive PR, all while legally keeping that money away from the BIR’s general fund.

4. Asset Valuation and "Paper Wealth"

A huge story recently involved Manny Villar’s "Villar City" and the massive revaluation of land assets.

  • The Move: When land or assets are revalued upward, a billionaire’s net worth skyrockets on paper (making them look great for Forbes), but they don’t pay tax on that "gain" until they actually sell the property.
  • The Flex: They can use these inflated "paper values" to secure even more loans (see point #1), essentially creating a cycle of infinite liquidity without ever triggering a taxable event.

5. Offshore Structures

As revealed in various global leaks (like the Pandora Papers), many elite Filipino families hold assets in "tax-efficient" jurisdictions like the British Virgin Islands.

  • The Goal: By keeping international earnings in offshore accounts, they avoid the Philippine "situs" of taxation. Unless the BIR can prove the income was generated specifically within Philippine borders, that wealth remains untouchable.

TL;DR Tax Evasion (hiding money) gets you in jail. Tax Avoidance (using the law to your advantage) gets you on the Forbes list. The system isn't necessarily broken (totally broken); it's just designed to reward "Capital" (investments) more than "Labor" (salaries).

Question for the sub: Do you think the government should implement a "Wealth Tax" (like the 1-3% proposal recently pushed by IBON Foundation) to target these stagnant billions, or would that just drive all the investors out of the country?
