TIL about Philippine heirloom/local tomato variety
I first saw this tomato in Erwan Heussaff’s YouTube video, “The Rarest Tomatoes in the Philippines,” and I had no idea we had our own heirloom tomato varieties!
Kinalabasa, also known as Kamatis Tagalog, is a local Philippine heirloom tomato. It has a distinctive deeply ribbed, almost pumpkin-like shape, and when fully ripe, it turns a deep red. It’s described as fleshy, sweet, and very flavorful.
What’s interesting is that traditional Philippine tomatoes like this have become less common as farmers shifted toward newer commercial hybrids. There are also similarly shaped local varieties with different regional names, such as Bakka-bakka and Kamatis Iloko.
If you saw Kinalabasa for the first time at a market, especially next to the usual smooth, round commercial tomatoes, you might honestly think “Imported ba 'to?” because it's so uncommon compared with the tomatoes we're used to seeing.
