I'm sitting here looking at my 2 decade old DVD version of O Brother, and I'm wondering if anyone has any tea about why we don't have a 4k yet, or any rumors of when we might get one? I'll probably bite the bullet and get the blu-ray since it is so inexpensive, but I'd love to see a really nice treatment of this film!
Looking for some advice - hosting 40-45 people for a graduation party on Sunday at 1pm. When I was younger I’d just start the cook 14ish hours ahead of time and tonight it out overnight with beer and tunes. Now at 53 I’m too tired to pull that off, and the stress of the cook not being complete in time is too much. So I’m going get up super early Saturday to cook 3 briskets.
What’s the best way to either hold them until the party, or worst case refrigerated them and reheat them (whole) by the time the party starts?
Suggestions welcome.
From FB Marketplace a lovely pair of chairs that need a little TLC. Still trying to identify the maker, but overall pretty happy for $50. Guy wanted $20 for both, offered $50 to have them delivered. When he got here he said “I guess these are special or something, I’ve gotten lots of messages in the last 10 minutes!”

I have a pair of ‘85 La Scala Pros that have always sounded fine to me since I bought them a couple of years ago. This week a listened to a newer pair and the low end was astoundingly better. It is clear that I probably need to inspect and replace the subs woofers in my cabinets. I’m assuming that Crites is the place to go, but I’m wondering if there are any other recommendations? I sub from Crites more than I paid for the La Scalas!
Simple question - the girls get bouquets of flowers after they do their walk at High School Graduation ceremony, what about the boys? I didn’t get anything but a hand shake from my dad, and a hug from my mom, but that was 91. I’ve given lots of right of passage gifts (pocket knife, wallet, watch, car, razor) so all the low hanging fruit has already been gifted. We have a big celebration the a few days later, but my wife insists that we should give him something the night he walks.
Thoughts?
EDIT: Thanks for the great suggestions. As I explain in one comment below, I’m not averse to giving a bouquet, but his girlfriend is hand crafting one for him and we didn’t want to appear to be competing with her, she’s a very sweet girl. And this is mostly about a gift at the ceremony, not for graduating overall. Although, I do really appreciate the graduation gift ideas! We were just going to get him a laptop, but it felt kinda hollow, and all these other ideas are great!
EDIT 2: This post is also a good reminder for me, that despite the fact that his room is a disaster, and he always forgets to bring the trash cans in from the curb, and sometimes leaves the lights on and front door unlocked when he gets home after work, he’s a pretty amazing kid and we’ve been very lucky to have such an adventurous companion in our lives and in our home for 18 years. Now I’m getting all teary thinking about him leaving in a few months.
Goodwill gods are being good to me this week. Spotted this beauty from across the room and snagged her as quick as I could. This Goodwill is in the heart of a neighborhood that used to be the heartbeat of Houston’s gay community from the early 70’s to the early 2000’s, and I’ve been to so many of their estate sales where amazing pop art like this was priced far beyond reach. So lucky to have grabbed this before someone noticed it was not some crappy reproduction, especially the pricing team at Goodwill. Lately they’ve started tagging art at insane prices, including lots of mass produced “starving artist” stuff at $80 or more. The glass needs some cleaning but otherwise this is in immaculate condition!
9:30pm drop in to Goodwill paid off. This beauty was being wheeled out to the furniture section, wobbly as hell, and I knew what it was immediately. $9.99. Got her home, cleaned up, and tightened up all the screws (current IKEA wrenches all worked). “Vintage” 90’s Strind doesn’t exactly fit with all of my decor but I’m pretty happy about it. Looks like they are listed for $600-1200 online these days, so I may sell to get something that fits better, but I kinda love it.
Introducing my boys to David Lean, and Peter O’Toole with Lawrence of Arabia tonight. Thanks to whomever posted that it was in stock and on sale over the weekend! I didn’t realize it had a 7.1/Atmos mix, so I’m pretty stoked to put my thrift store/FB marketplace audio set up to work!
My only regret is that I chose a non-profit career and will never make OLED money, haha. The limitations of a fairly basic LED tv are pretty obvious with these big blue skies. You can even see the streaking here in the photo. I’ll enjoy it anyway!
(Edit: I get it, speakers are too close together. I live in a pretty small house. Did I mention I work in the non-profit space? The setup works for me. I enjoy the hell out of my movies.)

For both my iPhone and desktop applications, nearly all of my devices are no longer appearing on the devices list. I used to be able to see my 3 receivers (when they are in standby mode), 3 amazon fire sticks, and 4 Alexa devices. Now everything is gone except for one Amazon Echo device. I've restarted and power cycled EVERYTHING including my network, and nothing is bringing these devices back to the list. Apps are updated to the most current version. Any ideas on what might have changed, and is anyone else facing this problem?
