I was thinking about Wolverine × Squirrel Girl, and why it works way better than it should because Logan responds insanely well to people who refuse to be intimidated by him, and Doreen’s whole thing is disarming cynicism with sincerity instead of fear. The issue as I see it isn’t chemistry, it’s tone.

Logan exists in a world of trauma, violence, and doomed relationships, while Doreen operates on near-cartoon optimism where empathy can solve almost anything. At the same time, Doreen isn't a stranger to violence if the team-wiping variety, and Logan isn't a stranger to contentment, for all that he pines for partners who are emotionally committed elsewhere

I often talk jape about Spider-Throuples, Spider-Polycules, and other non-conventional relationships for Peter Parker, and they almost invariably involve Felicia Hardy. While 616 is replete with panels that tease and lampshade, Felicia Hardy especially under current ASM writer Joe Kelly is very much a sharer and a carer and extremely unbothered by whatever antics Spider may get up too, so long as she herself can have some Spider, too. And I have in fact had a theory about 616 and the direction the relationships in that world are taking, then more or less replicated the same dynamic in Rivals with a, if I'm honest, a better partner for Peter and Felicia.

Whether that's a reaction to community enthusiasm for Spider and Sai being warped to suit the dynamic I prefer to include my absolute favorite monogamous ship for Spider, it's still important to me that relationships have an equilibrium between partners, and that gets exponential with every additional partner, which brings us back to Peter and Felicia and the Company's wider tendency to stack them together, no matter the dimension or media, with only a couple exceptions. Rivals is no different, with accursed lore cards and delightful dialogue suggesting the same tired status quo between Peter and MJ, and Cat in the background being the temptation, something she absolutely ¡¡hates!! being.

So when I mention Cat's ... enthusiasm...for Peter Parker and being part of his life, or being a "bisexual menace," or sharing him, it's only and because that's more or less exactly what and how she's been written; for sure the past few years, and less explicitly over the past few decades. If the mystery and thrill of Spider-Man vs the freedom and allure of Black Cat was what drew those two together, then, as I see it, Sai's life, and emotional closeness, is even more of a draw, especially when she sees how Peter and Sai would be around and to and for each other. The question, of course, is whether Sai herself would be open to that same arrangement and the relentless abundance of affection.

I've loved this ship even before coming to Rivals. I've written meta arc pitches to ship them for the sake of their (maybe) clone daughters, and done my own fan art and just love their 616 dynamic, even if it very often gets misconstrued; even wrote a whatever about them going to Hyboria, of Conan the Barbarian fame, in order to have a scene almost exactly like this. It's awesome.

Suppose Richard Parker and Valeria Richards got married; would that make DOOM Richard's uncle in law? Godson-in-law? Would Peter and MJ have to sit opposite DOOM at the Richards' Family Gatherings?

I love them. This friend group of relationships lives rent free in my brain.

If I could art, that would among the first things I would draw. Maybe I'll try anyways.
