Especially when discussing crimes that are too horrid to contemplate, like murder-rape of children, or ritualistic serial killers; people tend to comment that they would wish for the death penalty in specific cases. It is extremely common in subs dealing with news. Sometimes the death penalty will be legal in their region, sometimes it has been abolished.
Do you think death penalty advicates are in breach of rule 1, advocating violence?
A interpretation from moderators I’ve come across is this:
‘Capital punishment discussion is rarely, and pretty much only academically allowable. The sitewide rules prohibit any advocation of harm. Therefore it is not possible to support/propose/advocate for capital punishment. We do of course realise the irony of this, being an American website where such is often legal.
Regardless, when you transmit your allegedly entirely legal proposals on capital punishment on a submission regarding someone making a crime, or otherwise doing something you do not agree with, it is evident to all concerned that one way or another, you want someone quite specific killed. And therefore we apply the sitewide rule on advocating harm.
We have heard the justifications and sidesteps 1001 times. We know what you mean, and act on it accordingly.
