this ROXY MUSIC announcement just blew my mind!

For Your Pleasure is one of my FAVORITE albums, and yeah - I'll be buying. Probably both versions because I'm an absolute freak for this era of the band and its my favorite RM album.

I question, however, the release strategy of leaving the Blu-ray as an SDE exclusive instead of adding it to the box. It forces me to purchase both versions, whereas I'd have been happy to drop a nice chunk of change on the box with the surround mix. I wish they'd taken the Frankie Goes to Hollywood route of including the blu-ray in both the box AND as an SDE exclusive. As it stands, its nice to have some extras on the SDE blu-ray but bafflingly its missing the song "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" from the 73 Peel session. Am I happy there's extras on the BR at all? Certainly - none of the other RM blu's have included extras. I'm also excited that we have two immersive mixes on offer.

In the following video, I explain the differences between the two versions, elaborate further on my concerns and attempt to provide some buyer's advice and guidance.

if you love PROG ROCK and ATMOS, DON'T miss this! REFESTRAMUS “Morri’s Rock Boutique”

You've listened to our reviews of major surround and Dolby Atmos mixes - now it's time to hear what WE can do!

For the past couple of months, Jonathan and I have been working on a new immersive edition of Refestramus' "Morri's Rock Boutique." Refestramus are a Chicago-based progressive rock band that I handle production, mixing and mastering duties for. During the entire process, I had surround sound in mind, even placing a few nods to the format in my original stereo mix.

So, what did it take to translate a "too big for stereo" prog rock album to immersive? Join Jonathan Cornell (Immersive Audio Album) as we break down the new mixes, discuss the "mixology" and challenges and talk about bringing this unique album to Dolby Atmos.

If you purchase "Morri's Rock Boutique" from IAA, please let us know in the comments below what you think! Also, don't forget to subscribe to both of our channels so you don't miss our interview with the band (coming to the IAA official YT channel) or any future surround mix discussions and reviews.

Zappa / The Mothers of Invention "FREAK OUT" Dolby Atmos mix releasing this Sept!

As usual with these Zappa sets, I'm all in. With other artists I can be more selective, but Frank is one of the handful of artists I enjoy digging into the alternate mixes, outtakes and live tracks many, many times. Each one of these sets serves to fill in gaps and complete the picture for Zappa archival nuts like myself. Obviously I'm most excited to hear the Dolby Atmos mixes - these can be a wealth of enjoyment and close study for me particularly because Karma and Erich's work honors the originals while revealing the depth of complexity. The right team is behind these reissues and that's why I order with confidence. Further thoughts in the video, with a particular emphasis on what separates this release from the previous MOFO box.

is it worth buying the YES 70s TRILOGY in Dolby Atmos?

YES and Rhino Records have finally liberated 3 "box-locked" Dolby Atmos titles - "The Yes Album," "Fragile," and "Close to the Edge." So, in our opinion, are these worth picking up if you own the old 5.1 mixes?

Join my friend and colleague Jonathan Cornell and I as we guide you through the Yes catalog in Dolby Atmos and surround sound formats!

Our honest opinion of the new "Fish Out of Water" Dolby Atmos remix ... (Chris Squire)

SWT is a great engineer indeed, but this is one of the few cases where I emphatically prefer the original mix.

The new mix relies a bit too much on reverb to my taste and comes across a bit congested to my ears. It restores a lot of the deleted orchestral parts which is an interesting idea in theory, but the result is that Chris and Bill sound a bit distant. I think its an interesting alternative for people who love the album but the original mix with dry drums and bass up front and orchestra used decisively in the background works better for me as a "Yes man's solo album." Placement wise - I'm happy to report the Atmos mix is quite creative, with Chris' vocals spread around your height and rear arrays and lower drums and some of the orchestra and lower brass occasionally trailing behind you. Overall though, I think I prefer the character of the older 5.1 mix despite some nasty cymbal frequencies now and then.

Lastly, while I assume this is an issue that couldn't be dealt with, I find the ending with the missing bass solo to be lacking in context and a bit confounding. My advice is to listen for yourself (on streaming) and decide if this is for you. Thanks to Immersive Audio Album for helping out with this review of the new edition of Chris Squire's Fish Out of Water.

are the JETHRO TULL Dolby Atmos Editions worth a double dip?

FINALLY, Jethro Tull and Rhino / Parlophone have announced a release date for the Aqualung and WarChild Dolby Atmos editions. In the following video, I'll explain what's included in these new editions and why I think they are worth double dipping if you already own the boxed set editions.

The 5.1 mixes were originally made over 10 years ago. That's nearly an eternity in music technology years - plugins have evolved a lot since then, but also Steven Wilson has had over a decade of experience since he last worked on them. His more recent mixes have tended to be warmer, more adventurous and also somehow *more* faithful to the originals. Plus, the old DVD versions are lossy - the new versions would be presented in true lossless for the first time. I'm so happy that these mixes are being released on affordable, single disc blu-ray editions instead of repressing the large boxed sets. However, I do have some reservations about the lack of bonus material on WarChild.

Personally, I've been waiting for these for some time and I hope we get more Jethro Tull Atmos mixes in these affordable, standalone Blu-ray editions. Are you as excited for these as I am? What would you like to see next from the Tull Dolby Atmos series? Let me know in the comments below.

interview with Eber Pinheiro about Gentle Giant's "In a Glass House" new surround and stereo mixes

If you're curious about the new AI assisted remix of Gentle Giant's "In a Glass House," you should check out this interview on the Make Weird Music Youtube channel! Anthony Garone and I asked extensive questions about how the mix was created - the goals and directives of the new stereo and immersive mixes, the level in which AI was used, the source of the master and many more.

If you're concerned about the use of "AI" in this context I think you will learn a lot. Engineer Eber Pinheiro used "stem splitting" tech to derive multitrack stems from a stereo source and described the process as "harder" than a mix with authentic multitrack tapes.

Don't forget to subscribe to my channel as well as Make Weird Music. I'd imagine more collabs and crossovers will happen in the near future.

Take care!

this great SUPERTRAMP release is flying under the radar! "Crime of the Century Live" blu-ray review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWXw_WS6C2Q

I feel this release is sliding under the radar a bit. Could be the limited availability, but the release of a concert FILM from a classic band's heyday should be shouted from the rooftops. Particularly when it is as high quality as this one is - the picture quality is excellent, with deep black levels and clear closeups of musician's hands and faces. Ken Scott's Dolby Atmos mix is hardly the most immersive mix on the market, but its so clear, dynamic and punchy that I don't mind that much. It does a good job of putting you in the audience at Hammersmith Odeon, with the band stage placement laid out in your speaker array and the "room sounds" reverberating off your back walls.

As a semi-casual fan of this band I was floored. It's not a perfect performance, but in this age of AI trickery I find hearing a few "human" mistakes absolutely thrilling. Recommended to fans of classic prog / pop / rock and its a must for Supertramp connoisseurs.

JETHRO TULL fans are eating WELL this year - "J-Tull Dot Com" Boxed Set Announced for August!

This is the first of the boxes to feature an album released during my lifetime (not counting Xmas). As such I remember its release very well and I have a lot of warm feelings of nostalgia for it. Listening to the new Bruce Soord mixes of "Spiral," it seems the bass and drums have been given a nice boost and I can hear more of Martin's fantastic playing. The Atmos mix is befitting the material, subdued compared to the zaniness of Under Wraps but some cool panning effects when the material calls for it. Better overall fidelity / less limiting than the stereo mix so I'm pleased. I'm a little disappointed that Secret Language of Birds was not paired with it, but maybe we'll get a boxed set for that one down the line? Oh well, I can't complain much. With all these extra tracks and new mixes, Tull fans are eating well in 2026! further thoughts in the video!

RANKING the Genesis Analogue Productions SACDs by sound quality!

The Chris Bellman mastered Genesis SACDs are significant in the world of classic rock band reissues as they bring the original mixes back in print for the first time in decades. Since we've completed the first cycle of titles I thought it was a good opportunity to rank the 7 currently available titles. I chose my ranking based on overall sound quality and how significant of improvement over previous editions.

my ranking (including timestamps)

00:55 "Selling England by the Pound"

03:28 "Genesis" (1983)

04:59 "Foxtrot"

07:29 "Abacab"

09:16 "A Trick of the Tail"

12:12 "Nursery Cryme"

14:22 "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"

GENTLE GIANT announce AI assisted remix of "In a Glass House"!

I'm cautiously optimistic! I find the new mix makes subtle improvements but I also hear signs of "artifacting" and a peculiar artificiality surrounding the vocals, drums and keyboard tones. Better than nothing but not as amazing as a true "from the multitracks" remix could be. IMO of course ! Further thoughts in the video above.

Better than the original CD? "Genesis" (1983) Analogue Productions SACD REVIEW

I had the chance to compare the new SACD of Genesis '83 with a vintage US CD pressing. I find them extremely close in terms of EQ, though the new Chris Bellman master certainly offers greater bass response and individual instrument clarity. The loudness is similar, though I think the 2025 master seems a bit louder to my ear thanks to the increased bass frequencies. Phil's drums certainly get the most improvement but I'm not sure the sonic upgrade is going to be worthwhile to most people.

Worth it if you love the album and if you enjoy collecting the AP discs but I hesitate to recommend it when the old CD can be had for around $10 second hand. Further thoughts in the video!
