Mixing help for deathcore vocals

Trying to get better at mixing since my deathcore project is on a super budget. When it comes to vocals I think I’ve figured out highs and how to get them the way I like them

But lows seem to suffer when using the same techniques- at least with my preference.

I HATE the overproduced double and triple tracked sound of lows from bands like Lorna shore. I prefer texture and uniqueness. Like whitechapel off the somatic defilement or Elysia off masochist- you can hear all the gurgling and everything.

The way I mix highs makes this basically go away on lows. I’m almost to the point of just using raw audio for the lows.

Are there any tips when it comes to EQ, compression, anything to help bring out the low end of the vocals and keep the deep sound with the texture while allowing those parts to cut through more while filtering out any true voice that might slip through?

Edit: I have looked for videos on YouTube, but nail the mix doesn’t have any bands that do lows the way I prefer just the opposite, and Joey sturgis explains how to make that overproduced Octanecore sound but again, that’s the opposite of what I’m looking for

Help- idk what to do

My music project uses non-exclusive leased instrumentals
I haven’t tried to upload to Spotify yet because I’m not done with a song (that I have already paid for and have the license to use)
I noticed someone already uploaded a song using the same instrumental with the content ID setting.

Basically I’m trying to figure out how I will be able to get it uploaded when it’s done.

According to Google I should try and if it gets rejected I respond to the rejection email and send them the license to use the instrumental

Has anyone gone through this, is this accurate, and will it have any impact on my projects Distrokid/spotify/Apple account?

Post-deathcore vs Deathcore

Interview is from the brutality podcast interview with rose funeral. I’ve also noticed all these post-deathcore bands sound identical and think it’s part of the reason it’s stagnated recently in terms of growth while the modern deathcore bands like psycho-frame, killing of a sacred deer, and peacemaker fl along with the MySpace deathcore scene like rev3rent, Eyesawgod, Katywentmissing, etc have such an exponential growth rate in comparison. It was cool for the first couple months when it was new and unique, but it quickly became an unoriginal oversaturated and overproduced sound with no personality and the lack of hardcore elements and mosh makes it lack the energy and fun that makes Deathcore stick around in peoples playlists and want to go to the same bands shows multiple times.

Mix critique please

How’s the mix on this? On our EP in an attempt to bring up the low end a bit the tracks got a bit muddy and also the 808s clipped way too much

Afraid I may have overcorrected a bit
Using a reference track for some reason isn’t translating to after the tracks are rendered then with the phone/car/headphone test which is why it wasn’t caught with the EP

Thanks in advance

Looking for feedback

So I’m trying to get some feedback/constructive criticism on a couple things regarding our first EP we will be officially dropping after finishing up one last song later this month. Three of the songs are old songs from our demo that have been either remixed or a combination of some re-recording and remixing. The rest are new.

I’m trying to get an idea about a few things:

Mixing: does the mixing seem at least relatively consistent across the songs? Or do any blatantly stand out. Personally I think something is off with the intro but can’t place my finger on it, but also the song post traumatic seems like it might need more low end? So aside from overall song loudness differences (which will be fixed via volume normalization when uploaded to streaming services) does anything stand out like a sore thumb? Are the vocals too high or low, and if so is it the highs or lows? Only a certain part? Etc.

Flow of the order of songs: there is a somewhat consistent but still noticeable difference in certain aspects of the songs- some are faster and more of the hxc oriented side of deathcore, some are a bit more beatdown-ish with a typical deathcore sound, some have a bit more riffs parts- etc. the goal is for the EP to flow so there isn’t too much whiplash causing it to sound like there isn’t any consistency.
Also seeing as how half the songs are old ones it doesn’t seem like a good idea to have too many of them in a row- but currently they are all three in a row due to wanting the EP to flow well as long as start off with a newer song that will grab attention. So far the goal is to put the last song we are recording as the third to last song which would break it up pretty well and is similar to the two after it.

Also just generally “does anything sound off or awkward?” Been thinking about potentially completely redoing the intro because something just seems off about it, but it could just be the vocals being a bit high in the mix?

I’m aware this isn’t gonna be some people’s cup of tea, it’s MySpace deathcore with alot of hxc influence so I’m not trying to ask if anyone “likes it” necessarily, just trying to get some feedback on the more objective (while it’s still bit subjective I think these things are generally more objective) .

Here is a link to a SoundCloud playlist that isn’t an official release or anything, just one used for personal testing of the things mentioned before and to also send to people for feedback etc.

Edit: also, the drums are all VST

TIA

How many 808s are too much?

Currently re-mixing some of our demo songs and one of the things that was brought up in reviews was adding some 808s.

So how many 808s are too much?

On the first song I’m adding them to there are three points so far where I have added longer drawn out and louder deeper ones (like the beginning of a breakdowns and another specific part that changes from a two step to a toe touch part and it fits well).
Going through I’ve felt like it works to have some quieter smaller ones at the beginning of essentially each new part.

If they aren’t too loud and distracting does it make sense to have one at the beginning of each new part?

So far in total there are about 10 throughout the entire song counting the three really long ones I mentioned at the beginning. It’s a super moshy song with each part I added them to being punchy so I feel like it fits- but I’ve noticed a lot of times new things get over done

Any tips on 808 placement, frequency, and amount? I’m currently listening to songs trying to pay attention and get a better idea of the average use in most songs but I don’t want that to prevent myself from adding enough etc

Can AAS’ cause acute increased fertility? Research

Long story short my girlfriend is pregnant. I have two children with my ex-wife (DNA confirmed, I’ll get to why that’s relevant later). I compete at the professional level in powerlifting so I use anabolic androgenic steroids when preparing for competition. I have also been on TRT for over 8 years. When my twins were conceived I had been tested for infertility and was supposed to be infertile. On top of that, I was running a 19-nor, trenbolone, for a competition when they were conceived.
Now my current girlfriend is pregnant (I have zero reason to think she has cheated and I have no clue how she could even get a chance to because she’s pretty much with me 24/7 along with the fact that this has happened before). I recently did a competition in which I ran nandrolone- which is also a 19-nor. I know I did also run a DHT derivative this time, I can’t remember if I did or not when my twins were conceived so it’s very possible it was also in the mix then. That cycle is when she would have conceived. This is also 5 years after my twins- which I was already supposed to be infertile for- were born. I haven’t taken any time off of testosterone at any point and have done other cycles/competitions in the mean time- but generally not with 19-nor compounds.

I know 19-nors specifically are supposed to mess with Leydig cells and are supposedly extra strong when it comes to infertility.

Is there any chance I’m missing something and there’s a chance that you could acutely increase spermatogenesis through a rapid increase in androgen dosages?

I’m very confused how this could happen twice.

I should mention the reason I was considered infertile was due to sperm count- motility was not examined- so I guess it’s possible I still produce a very small amount and one got lucky? But the timing is confusing to me (also very visible and obvious hypogonadism)

Any literature or answers would be greatly appreciated

I need your help

I’m personally not the biggest black metal fan- although I do like a bit of DSBM. So I want to get the experts takes on this so I can reference it and maybe get some specifics of why (I presume) I’m right. And if I’m not I’ll gladly concede if you guys tell me I’m wrong.

But- I get annoyed when people call symphonic post-deathcore bands like Lorna shore, mental cruelty, worm sheperd, etc “blackened deathcore.” I think they may have heard dimmu and cradle so they assumed synths, high screams, and tremolo picking - which aren’t exclusive to black metal by any means- makes something “blackened”.
I’ve heard two “blackened deathcore” bands in my life that actually seemed to have black metal elements and can’t remember their names but they definitely never took off.

Am I right in saying that it’s not “blackened?”
If so are there any specifics I can take note of and reference when talking about this in the future?

How to add 808s

I’m stupid and can not figure out how to do this..🤦‍♂️ can someone break down to me how I would go about adding 808s to a MP3 in reaper? (As in the MP3 is an imported track)

I’ve only ever used stock plugins and everything so this is my first time trying to do anything like this

Reference of my screams

Since people think if you don’t show off when doing a tutorial on how to do the very basics of getting distortion for screams, here is a reference of what my actual screams- not just showing how to get distortion- sound like.

Idk why some people can’t comprehend that when you are trying to show someone the basics you should probably just do the basics too- but anyways, this is what my actual screams sound like.

The stuff in the tutorials is just what step one of getting distortion sounds like

Stop over complicating things- how to scream simplified

First and foremost I do think you should try a method that most vocal coaches typically use to teach screams… at first. But if you’re having trouble and are doing like 5 steps to try and figure it out- you’re over complicating it. These vocal coaches have to make content every day- they’re gonna find a million cues and different ways to teach so they can make a new post every day- it does NOT mean that any of those steps are necessary and it definitely doesn’t mean you have to use all of them.
This is a dumbed down “how to scream” for people that are stuck even when using all the different things the typical vocal coach on YouTube says to do.

The most common problem it seems is people trying to literally turn kargyrra or vocal fry into a scream- for some people it can be useful to lean into those and turn it into a scream- but most of the time it’s unnecessary unless you want to just know where you should feel the distortion. We aren’t LITERALLY turning vocal fry into a fry scream or kargyrra into a false chord- they just use the same anatomy that screams use to make the distortion.

Also- you don’t want to get in the habit of having a bunch of steps before you do a scream- THAT is how you get hurt. Making it over complicated means you’re more likely to do it wrong- you want to figure out an intuitive way to do it that doesn’t require a checklist

If what you see on YouTube videos or this video isn’t intuitive and doesn’t work DONT dwell on any single cue or process- just move on and try a new one. Don’t try to combine all this stuff- most of it is just a way to try and get you to do the right thing, it’s NOT necessary for you to be able to do the right thing.

If anything I say to try hurts or doesn’t work- don’t do it and move on.

Also I know my frys aren’t the best, I hate them and literally only do them when talking about how much I hate fry screams or when explaining to someone how to do them

Favorite type of mosh part?

Video for attention but obviously there are more types of mosh parts than this. Curious what everyone likes the most. Personally I like when the body of the song has a lot of two steps and the bouncy toe touch parts with fast tempo and mid tempo breakdowns- don’t care much for circle pit parts, side to side parts, and definitely not down tempo breakdowns(they never hit live, even tho people online seem to like them a lot).
Gang vocals and pileup parts are also tons of fun, sometimes if it’s done right the dead space can be really cool and effective too.
As long as there aren’t too many blast beat riff salad parts or psuedo-breakdowns in the song it’s usually really fun live

But yeah, what’s your favorite type of mosh part?

As blood runs black-Hester Prynne

I think I need new EQ settings, the lows sound weird. Less loud and textured than they should sound and less than they do on camera audio.
Probably should have left the inhale layer at the beginning out since it didn’t sync up so well but whatever

In celebration of WBCC re-recording the Golgotha album 😍

Got off time and the vocal removal software for the instrumental made it impossible to mix decently and still hear the instrumental but oh well

Should probably redo it without rushing it and do better lows but it’s good enough, I’m excited

Rate this lyric teaser 1/10, criticism appreciated (is it too cringe?)

Didn’t know this subreddit exists so now I can ask questions without feeling like I’m just doing a bunch of self promo in the deathcore sub lol

This is a zero budget lyrics teaser- but I want to know if it’s too cringe and/or cheap looking to use for promo on instagram etc where people that know me will see it lol (I have no problem playing shows, but when it comes to creative stuff like this I don’t have the most confidence). Working on a limited budget and would prefer to the budget being used for recording and producing an actual EP etc than say, $300 for a professionally done lyric video

Any criticism appreciated- including about the mix of the song etc

If anyone’s interested it’s called post traumatic (hematidrosis) by slain from foundation
