Difference between migration script and full install?

I ran the migration script on a Fedora install. I see that this is minimal compared to a full install.

So I'm wondering- if I did a clean install with Ultramarine, what differences would I see?

Painting over ghosting

Moved into a new place with ghosting/thermal tracking marks on a wall and ceiling of one of the bedrooms. I can clean it a bit with sugar soap or even rubbing alcohol but at some point just end up smearing it it into the walls.

Trying to figure out the root cause but in the meantime want to paint over it.

Do I need a primer first? If so maybe an oil based one?

And is there any particular paint which makes it less likely to show if it comes back, or at least easier to clean off?

Open source offline epub/pdf conversion suggestions

I've been trying to use ebook2audiobook on Linux (Manjaro) and keep running into errors.

So thought I'd come here and ask for recommendations for alternatives:

- Runs on Linux

- GUI (web is fine)

- Offline and open source (privacy-friendly is a priority)

- Ideally easy to set up with cuda (I have a 4060) but CPU is fine as I don't mind if it takes a while

- I've been using Sherpa for TTS on Android, so anything with as good or ideally better voices than that will work. Choice of models would be good. Voice cloning a nice to have but not essential

- epub and pdf compatible

Thanks all

Reader- Google and debloating

In the market for a phone sized e-reader that'll also manage podcasts, audiobooks, RSS and TTS. Had a couple of questions about the Viwoods:

  1. I know Google Play isn't enabled automatically, but how integrated is it into the OS?

I specifically want to avoid Google for anti-big tech/privacy reasons.

On most Androids, Play Services is a core part of the OS architecture and disabling it can break things. But some have alternative services handling key functions, so I'm trying to work out what's going on with Viwoods.

The website suggests Google apps and services are pre-installed but not activated ootb. Dies anyone know if they are already working at a system level?

  1. Are developer options available or locked down? Has anyone had success debloating with ADB?

  2. I'd rather avoid AI features unless they run locally. How integral is remote AI to device functions?

Thanks all.

Current state of Zoom/Teams/Meet alternatives

I tried a few open source/privacy-friendly video call apps a few years back but found them too unreliable to use for work.

Since I'm now on Linux I've founds Teams and Zoom to also be unreliable, so figured it was time to check in on the current state of alternatives.

Main requirements are reliability ootb and not needing to install an app, since I can't expect people I send links to to do this just for me.

Alternativeto comes up with a few familiar options and some less so: Jitsi, Big Blue Button, Jami, Proton, Infomaniak, Briefing.

Anyone with recent good/bad experiences with any of these, or something else?

Hibreak S/Pro and disabling Play Services

I'm considering a Hibreak Pro or S and have seen guides in this sub about debloating.

I'd also like to be able to get rid of Google services and apps, since these are really very bad for telemetry and I am trying to use FOSS/non-big tech apps as far as possible (so e.g Posteo mail, Filen cloud, CoMaps, Koreader or Librera FD, F Droid app store, Librewolf browser etc).

I've successfully deleted and/or disabled google play services on Android phones in the past but it does often break some functionality, particularly push notifications.

Wondered if anyone had tried it on a Bigme device and if so what the results were like. I figured since they mainly make non-Google certified devices for the Chinese market it may be more of an add on even for their global ROMs, unlike most global phone manufacturers who build Google into the central functionality of the OS.

I'm considering a Palma 2 Pro.

One thing is that I'd prefer to remove Google apps and services as far as possible (check out the degoogle sub if you're interested).

I know this is possible using ADB on Boox devices because people have made guides about it. What I'm wondering is what effect it'll have on functionality.

With most Android phones, deleting Google Play Services prevents a lot of data collection, but it also breaks push notifications and e.g location services.

Since Boox is a Chinese company and won't have GApps preinstalled on its Chinese devices, I'm wondering if their global ROMs come with their own versions of the services that Google Play otherwise provides (e.g notifications) and so whether it would be safe to degoogle.

If not, which phone sized eink devices aren't Google verified? The Viwoods one? I see conflicting info online about the Bigme Hibreak devices on this.

I tend to prefer OnlyOffice for the UI and compatibility, but there's times when I'd rather use Libreoffice because of a few features missing on OO.

What stops me is the UI. I'm aware of a bunch of tutorials online about how to make it look more like MS Office, but having tried this it still looks pretty cluttered and dated to me, so wanted to see if there are custom icons or layouts people are using and/or scripts etc.

Any suggestions welcome.

Grateful for any suggestions:

  • Have an A/U Kawaguchi currently
  • Pretty happy with it but it's just not quite big enough for what I need.
  • Main issue is that bottles slip out of the side webbing so they end up going inside
  • Means it's a push to fit in everything else I need to take on my commute
  • 16" laptop, sometimes an 11" tablet or portable monitor, fairly chunky charger, B5 notebook, lunch, a few random cables, occasionally a paperback book or two, a few tablets etc
  • Plus a 750ml water bottle and 750ml coffee flask which are the issue currently

I can variously see 16l or 18l capacity given for the Kawaguchi. I'm guessing I need 22-28ish to be on the safe side.

I'm an academic. After something that doesn't look like a hiking pack, and is smartish but not too business-y or techy. Heritage is ok.

Train plus a mile walk each way, so needs to be at least water resistant.

In the UK and absolute max of around GBP200, prefer sub-£150 if possible.

Maybe a Fjallraven Raven 28?

What's going on with this, then? "El Money"? Noided theories please

>"[The prosecutor] told jurors that it was "no part of your considerations" to decide who El Money was and what reason he might have had for co-ordinating the alleged actions of the defendants.

>He said that was because jurors did not have to decide what motivated the three defendants.

>He said the defendants had not demonstrated any particular political or ideological motivation, as opposed to a financial one, and that it did not matter whether they knew that the property they were allegedly targeting was connected to the prime minister or whether that formed part of their motivation."

I've been using Ultramarine for a few months (all good so far) and so haven't gone through an upgrade with it yet.

So wanted to ask, with Fedora about to move to 44, how does it work with Ultramarine? Do new releases follow Fedora a few weeks after?

And with Fedora 44 already in beta, if I wanted to try that but with Ultramarine could I install it and then use the migration script? Or is there a way to upgrade from within my current Ultramarine install?
