Weather App That Doesn't Suck?

So, I moved into San Pedro a couple months ago and my weather app has been so annoying. I've tried a few apps and they all say San Pedro, but then default to downtown LA due to San Pedro being a neighborhood of LA.

Does anyone have or know of an app that stops this from happening? For instance today it said it was 93-94 when in reality it was pushing 98 degrees. It's not much of a difference I guess, but seeing lower numbers for an area 30 minutes away makes it super annoying.

I've tried The Weather Channel app which works alright, but when I click the daily weather it shows San Pedro for about a second before updating all the numbers to downtown LA again.

When Did Chachi's Close?

I went down to their Beach City Marketplace location today and it was a ghost town! I went like a week ago and they didn't mention shuttering that location at all and seemed super busy!

I see they have the other location over by the Vons on Western, but that smaller location was within walking distance of my house.

RIP

Edit: Okay looking into their Instagram I've just never realized the other location was a Subway they've been converting into a Chachi's for half a year now lolol. I'm happy they got their own dedicated location instead of being holed up in BCM! Just sucks that I now I have to drive over there instead of walk down lolol. Purely selfish reasons I know.

WARNING Avoid the property 13617 Kornblum Ave #4 in Hawthorne or the company SOCALHOMENET

I toured the property today looking to move into the area August 1st for work. It seemed like one of those too good to be true places offered at $2850/month. It's a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom townhouse with a 2-car garage.

I met a real human being and toured the property this morning. She gave me paperwork for the application, and once I started into it I realized something was amiss.

They wanted two full bank statements, my full credit report printed by me, a bunch of my personal information, and a $30 application fee all printed and submitted in-person.

I went to the address they provided me on paper in town and it's some random nondescript industrial building that looking up online didn't have a property manager associated.

So, if you see SOCALHOMENET pop up as the property manager for a place on Zillow or Trulia I'd steer clear. I'm not sure what they want, but it could be an identity theft and money scam.

Gravity Gradient Torque Mod?

Does anyone know if there's a mod that simulates gravity gradient torque?

I was doing a deep dive on Google, and outside of a single forum post I can't seem to find any other mention.

For those not in-the-know, gravity gradient torque is a exactly as it sounds. If you have a long satellite, or just a satellite with a long boom pointed away from body being orbited, there is a gradient of gravity across the spacecraft.

This gravity gradient exists on all spacecraft, but you can take advantage of it to essentially tidally lock real spacecraft to the Earth so one side is always pointing to the Earth. It's a passive way to stabilize a spacecraft so solar radiation doesn't cause a spacecraft to tumble out of its attitude over time.

In real life you tend to go into a higher orbit so that your orbital period is longer and thus your angular rate required to maintain an Earth-facing attitude is much slower giving the gravity gradient torque more time to keep the spacecraft in its orientation. The faster your orbit, the longer the boom to create a more extreme gravity gradient across the craft.

In KSP though, the gravity is meant to mimic Earth's, but with orbits at roughly 1/10th scale. So, the gravity gradient is much more extreme given it falls off much more rapidly compared to real life. This gives the ability to have lower stable gravity gradient orbits with smaller boom arms.

I know mods like persistent rotation can simulate the effect by using SAS to point radial-in at all times, but it'd be cool if there's some mod that calculates the gravity of each part of a spacecraft and computes the gravity gradient across a spacecraft to "fake" the expected torque and work with persistent rotation.

Just a thought anyway! Since the math is relatively straight-forward it wouldn't be that much CPU overhead either given it can be directly computed without numerical methods. Hell, you could even simulate solar radiation torque to add even more realism to spacecraft attitude control.

Anyway, just a thought that would be fun! If nothing exists like that maybe I'll dip my toes into figuring out how to mod to just add more realism to the simulation. The problem is I've never coded a mod before. I can code in MATLAB, C, C++, and Python for engineering work, but I've never dabbled in actually modding a game to add functionality.

Ad Banners In Video Don't Go Away

As you can see, there's this ad banner for merch on the bottom. The Dismiss button does nothing and it stays the ENTIRE VIDEO. It makes it genuinely unwatchable in mobile.

I've been paying monthly for Premium for years now and then I get this garbage shoved down my throat. I intentionally pay to not get ads, and yet now they put the worst sort of ad that is so broken it's not even dismissabke in my videos.

This is in Android btw. They're about to get me to cancel my subscription and just go the ad block way. I've even tried to fully re-install YouTube and nothing. It's like they just vibe-slop coded this feature in and didn't bother testing if the stupid dismiss button actually works.

If anything they should at least have it set up on a timer so it disappears after a short time since they can't even vibe-code the stupid dismiss button to make it go away.

Kerbin-Duna Aldrin Cycler Orbital Design

So, I just graduated college with my degree in Aerospace Engineering focusing in Astronautics, and I haven't played too much with Lambert's Problem for generating transfer orbits. This was my first foray into that level of rigor and my god did I underestimate its difficulty.

For those unaware, this is called an Aldrin Cycler. It's a solar orbiting station that uses Kerbin and Duna's gravity to twist this orbit around so that you cycle between Kerbin and Duna intercepting them every pass.

This is a Kerbin to Duna cycler, and I'm working on a Duna to Kerbin Cycler as well.

Each time it passes, it needs to adjust its orbit a bit using Kerbin's gravity in order to adjust for Duna's eccentricity.

This has taken me a few days to code up lolol. It's nested Lambert's Problem iterative solvers using a one revolution + TOF approach. We leave Kerbin prior to the cycler's periapsis, and then meet Kerbin after the periapsis. My code also iterates using the previous orbit's solution in order to adjust for Duna's eccentricity.

It was a pain, but I got it to work which I'm proud of! Here's 7 loops of the cycler with in-game time at the top.

Credits to the KSP Wiki for Dynamic elements for each planet as well as this Google Docs:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1HwrFq6r2Wfzvghq8VYMNx0F2rG6nYMAEl_cyLj2EXjA/edit?gid=0#gid=0

that I can't find the OP for to credit :/ that gave me Mean Anomaly as well as some other stats for orbital determination.

I also used the bisection approach for Lambert's Problem, and then brute-forced the solutions iteratively by honing in on a converged solution to hit Kerbin with 1% of the Duna-Kerbin phase angle for the next orbit.

This solution does neglect Duna's perturbation on the orbit, but playing around in game it doesn't seem to do that much, so with minimal correction burns you can pretty easily correct. I'm looking at how to figure Duna's effect into the calculation, it's tough though given TOF from Duna to Kerbin will change, but the point of departure stays the same and the arrival point also stays the same. So, the solution is no perturbation at all.

I'm still reasoning with how to adjust the initial transfer to account for that.

What's cool too is that v_inf (Hyperbolic excess velocity) requires a delta of less than 1 m/s for each Kerbin pass. So, minimal correction required to continue on to Duna after passing Kerbin!

Anyway, this was a lot of orbital mechanics jargon, and I apologize if y'all are newer to orbital mechanics. It's tough! There's a reason why the phrase is "It isn't rocket science" lolol

Once I get the transfer windows and times out of my script (they're stored in data structures and need cleaned up) I'll get them posted in an edit to provide y'all with the orbital characteristics for each orbit and the transfer time to exit Kerbin. I'm currently only simulating up to Year 16 and some change in-game.

Has anyone seen this before? I ordered a vacuum solenoid for my import car on eBay, and it was listed as being in Chino, CA. It seemingly shipped directly from Yunexpress's Vernon warehouse.

Do Chinese sellers on eBay store their goods in Vernon for faster local shipping? The weird part is there's no tariff applied. It was free shipping and the part was reasonably priced.
