X3 M40i burbles/pops changed overnight after ONE loud pop — anyone seen this?

2019 X3 M40i (B58)
Need some opinions from people who actually know these cars.
Car used to have pretty strong burbles and crackles in Sport Plus — the typical B58 “fun” exhaust behavior, especially on lift-off in lower gears.
Then something weird happened:
While driving a few days ago, I got ONE unusually loud pop from the exhaust. Immediately after that, the character of the exhaust changed noticeably.
Now it feels like:
Burble intensity dropped a lot
Higher gears barely do any crackles anymore
The whole exhaust feels “muted” compared to how it used to be
Still gets occasional pops, but way less consistent
No CEL or warnings
Car drives totally normal otherwise, startup sound seems unchanged.
What’s confusing me is the timing — it literally changed right after that one loud pop, not gradually.
So I’m trying to understand:
Is this normal BMW/B58 behavior or ECU adaptation thing?
Could an exhaust flap/valve be partially stuck?
Or am I just overthinking normal variability?
Would appreciate input from anyone who’s seen this before on the M40i/B58 cars.
