First potato of the year
This one was exposed from soil erosion so it came out 2 weeks early.

This little lady was on my potting bench this morning while I was harvesting some seed pods. I think they’re either drawn to the succulents or drawn to the bugs drawn to the succulents. With how quick of climbers they are, the bench seems like a playground for them.
They keep my succulents PRISTINE - the only other inhabitants are spiders (which eat even more pests - yay!)
I’ve seen several baby anoles in my garden this year. Anyone have tips on what they really enjoy so I can be sure to have them every year?
Any thoughts on ID would also be appreciated, but my main question is whether it’s worth it to keep rotating this pot. It turns this far towards the sun every watering and I feel bad watching it use so much energy 🥲 should I just let it crawl out of the pot a little? Since I don’t know the species, I’m trying to make it conform to an upright habit.
Picking up these bench ends tomorrow to refurbish.
Use case: outdoor garden bench in central TX. Up against a fence to get only morning sun. Hoping to seat two.
My current plan is to use 48” 1x2 pine, stained and coated with spar urethane. Will likely replace the bolts as well.
Some pictures I’ve seen of benches have two layers of slats, one on the back. Is that standard/worth it?
What can I expect this design to hold in terms of weight capacity? Would it be overkill to reinforce a few of the slats with rebar or something similar? Any other advice?
Thanks!
Went to Home Depot to get some new gloves and found this fellow on its side, bare-rooted with no spilled soil. I asked and manager said I could take it for free after giving me a weird look for having walked up holding a cactus chunk.
Horrible scale infestation, poor thing! Nearby potted plants were just as bad. I spent about an hour on it today and finished with horticultural oil. Will pick it up tomorrow. It’s spaced out for now. Any tips that don’t involve my shaky hands holding a Q tip?
How far back should this be pruned, if at all? Potted from bare roots a few weeks ago. Leaves are, one-by-one, losing chlorophyll. I figure there’s a couple more weeks of root healing.
Cattleya: Momilani Rainbow x Heather’s Gold “Main Strike”
Currently in a 2.5” pot. Root tips make me think it’s still happy to chug along here. No roots out the bottom yet. There was one sticking out the bottom which was damaged, which I pruned. Growth is very fast right now!
This lives in a 1020 tray by a bright, indirect window. North facing, but my sideyard is narrow so my neighbor blocks any direct Texas sun. Fertilized weakly weekly, top watered twice weekly unless roots are still green.
I’m more of a vegetable & succulent gardener, so any advice is appreciated! My main question is whether it’s time to move this fella to a bigger home (I have 3.5” on hand).
Manor, TX
This tree provides no shade and is generally an ornamental pain in my ass. It hasn’t had a good time with the last several central TX winters. I’d love to replace this with an oak. I’ll admit my neighbors are giving me tree envy!
Are these sort of trees removable DIY? I’m not opposed to renting some tools, but I am not very physically able. What could I expect to be quoted for removal? I’d like to plant the new tree myself, at least, to learn the process better, so I’m excluding that from planning for now.
Friends already calling it the cocktus. My explanation that it’s “technically not a cactus actually” isn’t working.
Pretty happy with this thrifted glass container!
Recently moved this ex-indoor plant to the front porch. First rain and there’s an explosion! This convinced me to move some spawn buckets outside today for this wonderfully mushroomy weather.
Second pic is also from my garden, on a nearby potato leaf. I’m so grateful to have these fellas.
Image is not mine, but from an Etsy seller (1amsucculents).
This cultivar is a sure eye-catcher, but it seems like too many tricky factors. Extremely poisonous + needing rootstock for pups + shipping live.... argh! My questions are:
Austin TX. I think at least 40 years old.
Rescued from overcrowding so it’s actually a pretty old little guy, thus the corking. Repotted this week and wanted to share the gorgeous pattern!
New to this species. I want to either repot or prop. Is this a good time to prop as shown?
Thanks!
New growth up top looks fine so I’m baffled. I top-dressed with 4-6-4 yesterday. This soil is pretty dense so I’m trying to let it dry out more, but we’ve had a very wet season so far.
My next planned step is even more magnesium 🤷♀️ probably epsom salt foliar spray.
Thoughts?
Puerto Rico. Surely the biggest I’ve ever seen. Even if it’s many plants, reaching that tall just blows my mind.
I have recently regained some mobility so I’m cleaning up my property. This is one of three saplings in the yard. Two were willows, which I’ve moved to 5gal grow bag and will be rehoming. I’d love to do the same here… or maybe plant this one in the back where there’s more room? Depends on what it is. I can go get more pictures as needed.
What is it, and will it survive a transplant?
