I'm considering making the move from Epic Games to Heroic, the lag from EGS is becoming unbearable.

In chapter 5, there was a tape named "Interrogation" and in retrospect sounds similar to how this game is going to be like. The critter mentions 3 others, how one of them Gentle John escaped, and the prototype talks about taking care of them and the threat of death should they disobey.

My guess is that this game takes place a little after chapter 5. Prototype sends critters to prove themselves worthy of entering A Better Place by scavenging supplies for the city, but in the background there's an uprising being planned by Gentle John who wants to expose Prototype and offer true freedom for the other critters. So the critters will do tasks for Prototype while also contributing to the revolt and the conflict will gradually escalate throughout the game's lifespan.

I stupidly decided to shut down my computer during a Malwarebytes scan after the program froze when I paused it. Now my computer is unbearably slow and even though I've managed to do system repairs and Malwarebytes is gone, there's still computer processes taking up disk resources.
