Ok seriously, how did we end up with such a shitty deal? Why does every single flight have to pass over our damn city center and schools! I actually cannot tell if I’m just noise sensitive, or we all agree this is ridiculous. Please vote in the poll so I can understand my brain.

Reminder friends, there is an FAA approved plan to reduce plane noise in west Somerville and winter hill, by making Cambridge share the burden. And our MCAC board rejected it for no good reason!

Message our MCAC representative and ask them to revisit the MIT noise plan called Block 2D-2! It’s not fair that our town gets stuck with all the noise, just because Cambridge complained. Make them take their fair share!

On yet another all day western wind, I’m here to remind you that you could be hearing far fewer planes if MCAC agreed to enact the MIT 2D-2 plan for dispersion of noise.

Why didn’t they? This sure looks like a very equitable change to me…

Did you know Belmont has NO representation on the committee that controls Logan airplane noise? (And we are missing a huge opportunity)

there is a committee called MCAC that is supposed to have representatives from every town help create an equitable flight burden across the region. No one voted for them fyi. But importantly, Belmont doesn’t have one! They quit a while ago and weren’t replaced.

This really matters because a few years ago a big MIT study actually proposed a simple change to increase the equitability of noise pollution. They would divert some flights earlier over Cambridge and Brookline (two of the least equitably affected commmnities today btw). Despite this unambiguously improving equitability, our representatives unanimously rejected).

But it’s not too late! Logan and the FAA already endorsed this plan. If we can just get our group of unelected representatives to endorse the plan, it will proceed and our lives will improve.

Why don’t we have representation on the committee anymore? And why aren’t we demanding our unelected representatives act in our interest? Why let others prevent equitability, at the cost of their neighboring communities?

Hey greater Boston, if you’re in the critical path of this flight noise rendering,it’s worth knowing your life couldve been better but unelected representatives from the unaffected areas decided no.

TLDR; MIT published a big study on how to make noise pollution more equitable and gave one concrete option that was endorsed by the FAA and airport! They would direct some traffic over Cambridge and Brookline, taking some of the burden off of the rest of us.

But, for reasons I’m sure surprise no one, strong opposition from just a few members of MCAC caused the proposal to be rejected by our own community board (the ones who formed explicitly to make Logan pollution more equitable!)

But it’s not too late! The FAA and Logan are always willing to accept the proposal. It’s called “Block 2D-2 early branching proposal.” You should really email your MCAC representative from your town (we all have one, even if we never voted for them) and ask why they aren’t pushing for the early branching 2D-2 proposal.

At the Boston-Logan airport, when wind is directly due west how do they pick runway 33L vs 27?

Today in Boston have had persistent westerly wind. I’m curious why flights exclusively launched from 33L all day even though 27 also noted as suitable for westerly wind.

To be honest, I’m partially asking out of fear that the next few days will be sending endless traffic over my neighborhood. But also I’m just curious how ATC makes the choice, and why they wouldn’t want to use both paths for higher throughput.

I was curious how sound from from Logan flights affects our city so i built a pretty comprehensive model for the sound dispersion of jetplanes for the first 6k feet of takeoff. Take a look!

This is modeling the takeoff of DAL240 on 6/16/26. The flight corridor was taken from flightaware.

I'd share the link, but literally all of this is done via a single html file and i have a bunch of random private keys sprinkled throughout the file. If anyone is interested in the acoustic model itself i'd love to share that and get critiques or feedback!

What surprised me the most was 2 things:

  1. how much of somerville is subject to noises over 70 decibels when a plane files over (the white circle)
  2. how far from the flight path one needs to go before there is any noticable-to-humans change in volume (the light blue line, 3 decibel decline from center, the smallest notable change in volume).

Am I going crazy or is there an absurd amount of plane traffic over Somerville right now

I’ve lived near Davis square for 5 years and never seen it like this. There has been a new low flying plane every minute for the last 3 hours. What the hell is going on.
