Is MK Ultra in the Lore?

New to the lore and got to thinking this very question.

If MK Ultra isn’t stated in lore, what’s your interpretation of it inside the world of Mage?

Sinners (2025) is a Mage movie

Sam is a Mage, practically a Chorister with a possible affinity with Time. He uses music to access his future culture.

Remmick USED to be a Mage, similar to Sam, but underwent Gilgul after losing access to his Avatar after being Embraced.

That’s why Remmick wants Sammy! He wants Magic back into his life.

Trouble understanding Technology/Hypertech/Inventions

Hey all, as someone new to Mage and slowly wrapping my head around all the ideas, I’ve been struggling with how exactly some Mages whose paradigms involve fantastical technology perform their magic.

For example, say I build a Tesla gun that shoots electric projectiles. Is that magic, or did I just build a new invention? Maybe my view is too narrow, but I tend to think “this isn’t magic or reality bending, I just built something… it’s cool, but still plausible”.

Obviously building a teleporter is beyond current consensus, but again, it just feels like building something with tools that already have consensual reality and logic applied to them.

Favorite Movies that Encapsulate Mage?

Started watching Synchronic (2020) and immediately gave me Cult of Ecstasy vibes with possible beginning of awakening for the main character.

Two people OD on a substance in a shoddy house, with the message “Time is Not Real” written on the walls and strange wounds on the victims.

Curious what movies yall feel have a great lean towards the Mage universe!

Go-To Supplemental Books/Material?

Getting into MtA and wanted to know what supplemental material yall would recommend!

I have the 2nd Edition PDF and saw DTRPG is doing a sale, so was going to do a big grab on a bunch of additional stuff.

Norfolk Wizard Game edition?

Hi all! For those who have watched/listened to Alfabusa’s incredible actual play, I was curious if it’s mentioned at all which edition of MtA they are playing?

I’ve been wanting to grab myself a core Rulebook but am unsure which edition to grab.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ST Advice Needed: Background Music for Sessions, and Players on their Phones

This can go for any edition or game, though I’m planning on running either WtA or VtM.

My experience has been troubled due to having players distracted by the music I choose. I try not to play popular songs or ones with lyrics at all, really.

Even so, players tend to get easily distracted because of it at times. I assume it’s because of my own poor choice of background music for games, but we all also suffer from some form of ADHD/dopamine issues.

To add to this, some players tend to be on their phones between turns or moments involving them, which also takes the wind out of my sails at times. I try to improve as a ST and keep everyone engaged if possible, though it still happens.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Audio Book/Audio Drama Recommendations?

Recently re-visited Port Saga and have been itching for more audio media to digest while at work!

I’m not too huge on listening to actual plays (I prefer watching them), but if there’s any that are decently paced and have good plots, feel free to share them as well!

Phyre is an Elder in Name only

This has been a thought I’ve had whilst replaying the game.

I remember hating the idea of playing as an Elder when it was announced, as I liked the thought of starting as a Thin-Blood. But others seemed to remark how they’d prefer the power fantasy and not be a neonate again. Fair.

However, this game does not make me feel like an elder. Sure, I have enhanced capabilities, but what kindred doesn’t? I can glide, but other disciplines could’ve easily allowed for different traversal methods similar to it.

What strikes me as the most egregious example is how Phyre is called an Elder, but is never treated like one. Not even by Fabian. Everyone either sees Phyre as a non-threat or a simple passerby.

This is a kindred whose title is myth and legend, yet is disregarded as nothing more than a lifeless tool. And the excuse of “The mark limits Phyre’s powers” doesn’t work as (iirc) not everyone you interact with knows about the mark. Yet again, they disrespect Phyre consistently.

Give me your Clan Hot Takes

For example, not sure if this is an insane take or not, but I think the Tremere are WAY MORE cut throat and ambitious than the Ventrue.

Haunting/Ghost Horror has been Repetitive and Unintuitive

This all started, in my opinion, after The Conjuring and Insidious.

Horror movies that involve a haunting in the past 10 years have been rather shallow and repetitive, with the basic scares and loud noises accompanying them.

The ghosts themselves are the typical Dead Person who was a Killer, or the “plot twist” of the spirit actually being a Demon from Hell. It’s the same lead ups to the scares, the same exorcism that wins in the end, or sometimes reconciliation with the spirit if it was actually a misjudged person in life. Then there’s the standard “everyone dies anyways” ending.

I truly can’t think of any horror movies in the past decade that have evolved the formula and been genuinely good.

P.S. After thinking on it, Host was pretty neat, but still had similar beats. Its unique factor was the Snapchat face filters, but still had the same feeling.

Curious what yall think or if yall have seen any good haunting/ghost movies lately!

The Vault Keys should’ve been Actual Missions/Events

The game is a solid 7/10 for me, for various reasons. But I want to share something that continues to bug me about the game.

Having these ancient keys to powerful Vaults could’ve easily been their own missions with unique interactions and events within them. Imagine hearing other Vault Hunters discuss their adventures, their lives since Pandora, and even more info on OUR OWN CHARACTERS!

But instead, it’s a game of Hot and Cold to find an ancient relic fragment behind a small bandit camp, collecting dust near some rigging. Or the not-so-subtle golden balls that clearly mark something nearby.

It’s disappointing to me. I love the game, but can’t shake off the comparisons to Ubisoft games in how the open world is used. We even have the towers back again, kinda.

Your thoughts?

Had a rough concept idea for a Vault Hunter, but unsure how it’ll fit in with the overall universe.

Essentially they’re a priest or zealot of some sort, whether they worship some higher being, general philosophy, or even the Eridians themselves. Regardless, their beliefs are unhinged and may even seem like an excuse to just be an adventurer without a clear cause.

Playstyle could be split into either close combat with Smite effects or stacks, maybe bolstering allies’ shields, etc. Another can focus on “prayers”and “miracles”, which I imagine can increase fire rate and ricochet chances with guns.

Curious what you all think! Like I said it’s a rough concept and I haven’t put full thought into it just yet.
